Making his first full concert appearance in Asbury Park since the ’70s, Springsteen brings the Joad tour to where it all began. Accordingly, Bruce unfurls a Shore-centric set that opens with a three-song blast from Greetings: “Blinded By The Light,” “Does This Bus Stop At 82nd Street” and “Growin’ Up.” With sympathetic support from Danny Federici, Patti Scialfa and Soozie Tyrell, Bruce moves through apropos surprises (“Wild Billy’s Circus Story,” “Rosalita” and “Sandy”), moving rarities (“When You’re Alone” and “Shut Out The Light”) and wonderful takes of “Racing In The Street” and “Independence Day” among many highlights.

Vincenzo Bellini’s third opera, Il pirata, marked an important step in his career. Not only was it the 27 year old’s first score for the brand leader of Italian opera houses, La Scala, Milan, it also represented his first collaboration with Felice Romani, the leading librettist of the day, who was to become his regular artistic partner. Based (via a French translation) on an English play by the Anglo-Irish Gothic writer Charles Maturin, Il pirata describes how Gualtiero (José Bros) is shipwrecked during a storm on the Sicilian coast, where his former love, Imogene, (Carmen Giannattasio) has been forced into an unwilling marriage by Ernesto, the local duke (Ludovic Tézier). Tensions build between the three until Gualtiero kills Ernesto in a duel, causing Imogene to go mad with guilt. David Parry conducts this exceptional example of early romantic opera at its most dramatically potent.

‘For The Love Of Money’ is a long-lost Afro-disco-boogie-reggae masterpiece from Liberian duo Zack & Geebah, vinyl copies of which change hands for eye-watering sums on eBay. As part of its Tabansi Gold reissue project, BBE Music gives the album a top-quality, heavy-vinyl reissue, with original artwork, for the first time anywhere in the world outside 1980s Nigeria. Boogie classics like ‘For The Love Of Money’ and ‘No Peace No Love’ rub shoulders with the island-funk sound of ‘Take It Easy’ and the Toots-tinged funk-reggae ‘Home Is Home’, on to the soulful mid-tempo magic of ‘My Luck Will Shine’ and ‘Rock To The Music’. That old cliché ‘every one’s a winner’ is -for once- a truism!

antana is a Latin rock band. Founded in San Francisco during the late 1960s, it is based around the compositions and playing of lead guitarist and founder Carlos Santana. The band first came to widespread public attention when their performance of their Latin rock song “Soul Sacrifice” at Woodstock in 1969 provided a contrast to other acts on the bill. This exposure helped propel their first album, also named Santana, into a hit, followed in the next two years by the successful Abraxas and Santana III.
In the years that followed lineup changes were common. Carlos Santana’s increasing involvement with guru Sri Chinmoy took the band into more esoteric music, though never quite losing its initial Latin influence.
In 1998, the group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, with Carlos Santana, Jose Chepito Areas, David Brown, Gregg Rolie, Mike Carabello and Michael Shrieve being honored.
The band has earned eight Grammy Awards and three Latin Grammy Awards, the latter all in 2000. Carlos also won Grammy Awards as a solo artist in 1989 and 2003. Santana has sold more than 90 million records worldwide, making them one of the world’s best-selling groups of all time.

Neil Young – Prairie Wind (2005/2016) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

Since Prairie Wind is a return to the soft, lush country-rock sound of Harvest; since Neil Young suffered a brain aneurysm during its recording; since it finds the singer/songwriter reflecting on life and family in the wake of his father’s death; and since it’s his most cohesive album in a decade, it would seem that all these factors add up to a latter-day masterpiece for Young, but that’s not quite the case. Prairie Wind manages to be less than the sum of its parts and the problem isn’t a lack of good songs (although it does have a few more clunkers than it should) or a botched concept. Young’s decision to revive the country-rock that brought him his greatest popularity never feels like a cynical move — the music is too warm, comfortable, and friendly to feel like anything but Neil playing to his strengths. However, since he cut this in Nashville with a bunch of studio pros including legendary keyboardist Spooner Oldham, it feels just a tad slicker than perhaps it should, since the smooth sound inadvertently highlights the sentimentality of the project. It’s hard to begrudge Young if he wants to indulge in rose-colored memories — a brush with death coupled with a loss of a parent tends to bring out sentimentality — but such backward-gazing songs as “Far from Home” feel just a hair too close to trite, and the easy-rolling nature of the record doesn’t lend them much gravity. There a few other songs that tend toward too close to the simplistic, whether it’s the specific invocations of 9/11 and Chris Rock on “No Wonder” or the supremely silly Elvis salute “He Was the King,” which are just enough to undermine the flow of the album, even if they fit into the general autumnal, reflective mood of the record. But since they do fit the overall feel of the album, and since they’re better, even with their flaws, than the best songs on, say, Silver & Gold or Broken Arrow or Are You Passionate?, they help elevate the whole of Prairie Wind, particularly because there are some genuinely strong Young songs here: the moody opener “The Painter,” the gently sighing “Fallin’ off the Face of the Earth,” the ethereal “It’s a Dream,” the sweet, laid-back “Here for Your,” the understated “This Old Guitar” (there’s also the sweeping “When God Made Me,” recorded complete with a gospel chorus, one that will either strike a listener as moving or maudlin — a latter-day “A Man Needs a Maid,” only not as strong). This set of songs does indeed make Prairie Wind a better album than anything Young has released in the past decade, which means that it’s easy to overrate it. For despite all of its strengths, neither the recording nor the songs are as memorable or as fully realized as his late-’80s/early-’90s comeback records — Freedom, Ragged Glory, and Harvest Moon — let alone his classic ’70s work. Nevertheless, it’s the closest Young has come to making a record that could hold its own with those albums in well over a decade, which means it’s worthwhile even if it’s never quite as great as it seems like it could have been. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Straight after her induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on the 29th of March 2019, Stevie Nicks has released a ‘Best Of’ named Stand Back that compiles around fifty of her tracks. But wasn’t she already in the Hall? Yes, but only as a member of Fleetwood Mac. Indeed, Stevie Nicks, at 70 years old, is the first woman in history to be inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Her solo career of more than forty years kicked off with the enormous success of Bella Donna in 1981, released between Fleetwood Mac’s Tusk and Mirage. Stand Back exudes the same quintessence, starting off with the iconic Edge of Seventeen, the album’s standout single (sampled by Destiny’s Child on Bootylycious). The best of her contributions to Fleetwood Mac (Dreams, Crystal, Landslide, Rhiannon and others) also appear in live and previously unreleased versions. Nicks already has four ‘Best Of’ albums that precede Stand Back: 1981-2017, a compilation of three disks that notably shed light on her numerous collaborations.  – Charlotte Saintoin

Ole Bull (1810-1880) was an adventurer, violin virtuoso, composer and international star who brought the name of Norway to worldwide attention. Within music and drama he was a pioneer in the development of a national identity, and on the concert stage his fabulous playing skills and intense charisma early won him the sobriquet “the Scandinavian Paganini”.
Some of his most attractive tunes, as well as the rural potpourri Et Sæterbesøg have remained part of Norway’s cultural heritage; on this recording they can be heard alongside his two virtuosic violin concertos and the fiery Spanish fantasia La Verbena de San Juan. The concertos and the fantasia were rediscovered only a few years ago, and this is the first recording ever made of these attractive works. The A major Concerto was written in Italy in 1834 and boasts everything one could ever dream of when it comes to attractive tunes and giddy virtuosity. No. 2, Concerto Fantastico, lives indisputably up to its name and confirms what Franz Liszt wrote in 1840: “He is a sort of savage’s genius, possessing an abundance of original, enchanting ideas. In brief, he has moved me; it is a long time since that has happened to me.” 2l.no
