This live performance of Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem was recorded at a memorable concert in Utrecht in May last year. The Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, Netherlands Radio Choir, and Netherlands Children’s Choir are directed by the highly-rated Dutch conductor Jaap van Zweden. The soloists are soprano Evelina Dobracheva, tenor Anthony Dean Griffey, and baritone Mark Stone.

Born in Amsterdam in 1960, Jaap Van Zweden began his musical career as a violinist, becoming at 19 the youngest ever concertmaster of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.

In 1997, van Zweden made the decision to conduct full time, and was named the chief conductor of the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra where he remained until 2003. In 2000, he added the music directorship of the Residentie Orchestra of The Hague to his credits, a post he held until 2005. Jaap van Zweden began his third season as music director of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra in September 2010. His commitment to the orchestra was recently extended through the 2015-2016 season.

Coventry Cathedral was almost entirely destroyed during a German air raid in 1940, with only the outer walls, bell tower and tomb of the first bishop remaining intact. The new building was completed in 1962 and musically inaugurated with Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem in a performance broadcast live by the BBC. The release of this new recording by Dutch forces coincides with the 50th anniversary of the opening of the new Coventry Cathedral on 30 May.

As an instrument, the bassoon has had a remarkable history. Beginning with its Renaissance ancestry as the dulcian, it developed during the Baroque period into an almost indispensable part of the ensemble. Antonio Vivaldi recognized the versatility of the bassoon early on, composing no fewer than 39 concertos for it. But it was in the second half of the century that the bassoon achieved an equal prominence with the other woodwinds. The four delightful works on this album, performed by Jaakko Luoma and the Tapiola Sinfonietta, represent different facets of the Classical period solo repertoire, each of which makes considerable demands on the instrument. W. A. Mozart’s Bassoon Concerto was composed in Salzburg in 1774. It is the only one of the five concertos for bassoon composed by Mozart that have survived. It is a bright, sunny piece written at the age of eighteen, in which Mozart reveals himself fully aware of the capabilities of the instrument. J. N. Hummel was a favorite pupil of Mozart, who at an early age demonstrated his skill both a composition and the fortepiano. His Bassoon Concerto, written c. 1805, reveals influences from Haydn, Weber and Mozart. Both Peter von Winter and Gioacchino Rossini were best well-known during their lifetime as composers of operas. Today, Winter’s woodwind concertos, including his Bassoon Concertino, are his only works that have remained in the concert programmes. Rossini’s Bassoon Concerto was allegedly written in 1845 as a graduation piece for a music academy. Although Rossinian in style, the actual origin of the work cannot be verified. Nevertheless, the work is a fine example of its kind among Classical bassoon concertos. Jaakko Luoma has appeared as soloist all over Finland and in Europe. Luoma became member of the Tapiola Sinfonietta in 1993. During the years 1996–98 he served as solo bassoonist of Orchestre de Paris. Between 2001 and 2003 he also served as solo bassoonist of Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin. Today, he is principal bassoonist of the Tapiola Sinfonietta.

There are many questions surrounding Johann Sebastian Bach’s ‘Six Solos for violin’, or the Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin, as they are usually called today. When did he compose them, and why, and for whom? In what circumstances were they performed? And why would a master of polyphony choose to write for a melody instrument with limited scope for polyphony or chords? We can only guess at the answers – which makes the works all the more fascinating. The legendary violinist George Enescu famously described the set as ‘the Himalayas of violinists’, but for more than 200 years they were primarily regarded as pedagogical exercises rather than compositions worthy of the concert hall. Felix Mendelssohn and Robert Schumann tried to popularize them by making versions with piano accompaniment, while Busoni did away with the violin altogether in his transcription of the famous Chaconne from Partita No. 2. But since Yehudi Menuhin made the first complete recording of the Sonatas and Partitas, between 1929 and 1936, they have become a staple during violin recitals, on disc and in concert. Fascinating performers and audiences alike with their architectural perfection as well as their emotional range, these are works that lend themselves to very different interpretations, and on this recording it is the Bach of Finnish violinist Jaakko Kuusisto we hear. Himself a composer – as well as violinist and conductor – Kuusisto remembers beginning to study individual movements from the set at the age of ten. The music has been with him ever since, and to him ‘no other works for the violin provide a higher challenge or greater beauty’.

A Grammy Award winner and four time nominee, Hammond is also a multiple W.C. Handy award winner and has shared the stage and/or recorded with many of the masters, including Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, John Lee Hooker and Howlin’ Wolf.

VIOLETS ARE RED, ROSES ARE BLUE AND DICHOTOMY, is FOREST POOKY’s second album, a good ten years after the first one, not counting several side steps, cover albums, EPs and other split singles. We discover the evidence of his pop influences with a range of tracks that melodically reference the Beach Boys or the Beatles, while carrying the rhythmic energy of a Rancid or a Hot Water Music. The lyrics are sometimes satirical, sometimes naive, and at other times, the songwriter’s gentle rage is transpiring with humour. The track If I Get Sick of It, for example, goes against the romantic image of artists who proclaim “On the road until the end! – On the road until the end”, saying that the day he gets sick of it, he will stop. A first single illustrated by a video clip with strong vocals and served, like those that follow and the album itself, by the beautiful visuals signed by Roxane Rastrelli. Or Marvellous, which humorously recounts how awkwardly he managed when he first met his sweetheart on Reunion Island. And let’s not forget Jojo, in which he gently settles his score with the social network trolls. FOREST POOKY took his time to make VIOLETS ARE RED, ROSES ARE BLUE AND DICHOTOMY a record in his own image, touching, funny, moving sometimes, energetic often, liberating why not, always delightful. A bit of teenage energy in a “mature record”? Dichotomy we said!

The original idea for this fifth clarinet competition was that it would be part of the “Van Eyck project 2020 – 2021”. Everyone knows why this has been delayed by a year. For this competition, three composers were asked to write a new work inspired by the characteristic painting by Jan Van Eyck, “Adoration of the Mystic Lamb”. The composers Alain Crepin (Lam Gods Impressions), Johan Duijck (L’Homme désarmé) and Dirk Brossé (The Secret of the Mystic Lamb) have succeeded in this in a very special way. The International Clarinet Competition Ghent has now been organized for the fifth time. It has now grown into a special and highly appreciated competition that, due to its great and quickly built up success, has attracted registrations from more than 200 candidates from 5 continents. Of these, 65 clarinetists were selected to participate. On this album you can listen to the three finalists and enjoy their exceptional playing. Accompanied by the Flanders Symphony Orchestra, the Zemlinsky Quartet, Johan Duijck (piano) and soprano Franches Dhont, they will take you into the atmosphere of the competition!
