We Insist! (subtitled Max Roach’s Freedom Now Suite) is a jazz album released on Candid Records in 1960. It contains a suite which composer and drummer Max Roach and lyricist Oscar Brown had begun to develop in 1959 with a view to its performance in 1963 on the centennial of the Emancipation Proclamation. The cover references the sit-in movement of the Civil Rights Movement. The Penguin Guide to Jazz awarded the album one of its rare crown accolades, in addition to featuring it as part of its Core Collection.

Born in the Canary Islands and resident for many years in Scotland, clarinettist Maximiliano Martín follows up his Delphian solo debut – a collection of concertante works recorded with the symphony orchestra of his native Tenerife – with a programme for clarinet and piano that similarly explores the ways in which music can express national character as well as tracking more personal life journeys.
Maxi’s infectious personality is reflected in this deeply personal album, a joyous exploration of French repertoire (from the tenderness of Saint-Saëns’s clarinet sonata to the playfulness of Poulenc’s) that is supplemented by recent works from the two places he calls home: exquisite miniatures from the Scottish composer Eddie McGuire and the Tenerife-born Gustavo Trujillo.

The violinist, organist, composer and librettist Attilio Malachia Ariosti was born in Bologna in 1666. His career took him to Mantua and Venice, the most enlightened musical and artistic centers of northern Italy at the time, then to Berlin and finally Vienna in 1703. Expelled from the Papal State for moral reasons, by 1716 he was living in London where, together with Bononcini and Handel, he became a permanent composer of the Royal Academy.
His Six Lessons for Viola d’Amore, published in London in 1724 and dedicated to King George, were as the name implies composed expressly to teach violinists to play the viola d’amore. They are written in scordatura with a system of movable keys to indicate the different positions and fingerings of the left hand up to the fourth position.

A pioneer of modern ethnomusicology, Béla Bartók unflaggingly studied the folk traditions of Central Europe. His intent was twofold: to study and promote these musics he loved so much, but also to nourish his own language as a composer. This appropriation came about on the most superficial plane, via arrangement (Three Popular Songs from Csik, Romanian Folk Dances, Improvisations on Hungarian Peasant Songs) or imitation of peasant tunes (Two Romanian Folk Dances). But music of the people came to penetrate into increasingly deeper fibres of his style – harmony, rhythm, melody and even musical structure – giving rise to the Allegro barbaro no less than the to the unsettling poetry of the Two Elegies. A trip to Algeria in 1913 left its mark on the Suite op.!14. Complex Bulgarian rhythms inspire the final six pieces of the Mikrokosmos cycle. This folklore, constantly surfacing, is what makes Bartók’s music so human, and his voice so singular.

Pâques à Notre-Dame is an album of Easter choral music performed by members of the Maîtrise Notre-Dame de Paris, which provides training and performance opportunities for talented children, youth and adults. The album spans six centuries and the musical cultures of France, Italy, and Germany, and includes the last polyphonic work performed at Notre-Dame before the great cathedral was destroyed by fire amid preparations for Easter 2019. The conductor is Henri Chalet, director of the Maîtrise, and the organ features Yves Castagnet, who also composed three of the works on the program, which were recorded at the Basilica Sainte-Clotilde, another great Parisian church. As Henri Chalet says, “We know that Notre-Dame will rise again”.

The young British pianist has now recorded two celebrated rhapsodies for piano and orchestra, both from the ‘art deco’ period of the 20 th century: Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. His partners are the London Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Joshua Weilerstein. In the mid-’50s, composer and pianist Martin Denny combined lounge jazz, Hawaiian music, Latin rhythms, bird calls, and then-exotic ethnic instruments like, koto, gamelans, and Burmese temple bells into the sound known as exotica. Although the craze was short-lived, Denny recorded several popular instrumental albums and hit number four in 1959 with “Quiet Village,” one of the most unusual top ten singles of all time.
