After recording four albums for Impulse in 1967, the distinctive guitarist Gabor Szabo cut three records for the Skye label in 1968, of which this LP, Bacchanal, is the strongest. Szabo’s regular group of the era is heard on record for the last time: guitarist Jimmy Stewart, bassist Louis Kabok, drummer Jim Keltner and percussionist Hal Gordon. With the exception of two Szabo originals, the material is comprised of current pop tunes including two songs by Donovan, “Love Is Blue,” “The Look of Love” and “Theme from the Valley of the Dolls.” Despite what should have been a complete lack of potential, the Hungarian guitarist uplifts the material and mostly turns the pieces into worthwhile jazz.

Not many jazz artists were interpreting popular songs in the late ‘60s, but Hungarian-born Gabor Szabo looked past the oft-covered standards to put his trademark jazz transformations on a set of fashionable tunes on 1969, including major hits for the Left Banke, the Beatles, and more songs that his contemporaries neglected. Guitar master Szabo’s 1969 platter of folk and pop music touchstones is highlighted by the rock ‘n’ bossa spin on “Sealed With A Kiss”!

The new Album by Gábor Boldoczki is a musical journey of discovery to Versailles, to the court of the sun king, Louis XIV., The award-winning trumpeter, flute, and oboe Concerti of the French Baroque composer Jean-Marie Leclair (1697-1764), Michel Blavet (1700-1768), Jacques-Christophe Naudot (1690-1762) and Bonaventure Gilles (C. 1678-?) included in arrangements for Valve trumpet and flugelhorn. “The timbres and virtuosity resulting from the French decorations inspired me to interpret the atmosphere of Versailles on the trumpet for the first time,” says Gábor Boldoczki. “Unlike the natural trumpet of the time, which in the Baroque period is usually in a heavenly or stately context, the modern valve trumpet and flugelhorn allow the very melodic concerts to blossom into a new one with a brilliant, radiant and vocal sound.”The Album also presents four movements arranged for trumpet and orchestra from François Couperin’s (1668-1733) chamber music” Concerts Royaux “as well as a dance movement from the Opera” Les Boréades ” by Couperin’s colleague Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764). On his album” Versailles ” Boldoczki is accompanied by the Cappella Gabetta under the direction of violinist and Ensemble founder Andrés Gabetta.

Blues music is revered for it’s timelessness. The best blues – no matter how old – sounds as fresh and visceral today as it did when first recorded. The high-energy electric blues trio GA-20 – guitarist Matt Stubbs, guitarist/vocalist Pat Faherty, and drummer Tim Carman – know this well. The band’s dynamic self-penned songs sound and feel as fresh and real as the old blues they love and perform, including songs by Otis Rush, J.B. Lenoir, Howlin’ Wolf, Junior Wells and especially their favorite, Hound Dog Taylor. Legendary six-fingered Chicago bluesman Theodore Roosevelt “Hound Dog” Taylor always knew how he wanted to be remembered, declaring, “When I die they’ll say, ‘he couldn’t play shit, but he sure made it sound good!'” His first full length recording in 1971 was also the first album on now world-famous Alligator Records, Hound Dog Taylor & The HouseRockers. In fact, label president Bruce Iglauer founded Alligator for the sole purpose of recording and releasing that album. Now, Colemine Records – working in partnership with Alligator Records – will release GA-20’s new full-length album, Try It… You Might Like It! GA-20 Does Hound Dog Taylor, featuring 10 songs written or performed by the Chicago blues legend. From the fiery first single and album opener “She’s Gone” to the blistering “Sadie” to the all-time Hound Dog classic “Give Me Back My Wig”, GA-20 deliver one electrifying track after another. As a follow up to their Billboard-chart-topping Lonely Soul LP, a full worldwide tour will accompany this release, surely to galvanize the blues scene around GA-20!

Born in Brescia around 1571, Giovanni Battista Fontana lived in Venice, Rome and Padua, where he died during the plague of 1630. His music surprises by the mastery of counterpoint, the simplicity and the expression of its slow movements, the complexity of its ornamentation and the elegant vivacity of its short dance sections. Nicknamed ‘dal Violino’ and described as “one of the most singular virtuosos the age has seen”. Fontana has left us an outstanding example of early Baroque instrumental music. On this release, Daniel Cuiller leads the ensemble Stradivaria in a selection of sonatas.

Love Saves The Day features the down and dirty “trashcan blues” sound of G. Love and his long-term Special Sauce rhythm section – upright bassist James “Jimi Jazz” Prescott and drummer Jeffrey “The Houseman” Clemens. Engineer and producer Robert Carranza (Jack Johnson, Beastie Boys, Mars Volta) recorded the group live with few edits to capture the raw and unfiltered electricity of the tracks. “The music,” G. Love enthuses, “jumped off the tape.”

Today I’m proud to release my first-ever holiday album, Coming Home For Christmas. This record has ten original Christmas anthems I wrote earlier this year. I holed up in Orleans, Massachusetts for six days in November and wrote one song per day. Within two days, I tracked the entire album alongside my producer Jon Evans at Brickhill Studios with Jon handling upright bass and Mathias Bossi on drums. In my family, we’ve always had a strong tradition of caroling and sharing songs on Christmas. My Uncle Bob and I used to lead the family through all of the traditional carols as well as rock ‘n’ roll hits like ‘Summertime Blues’ and ‘Steamroller Blues’. After my Uncle Bob passed, my brother-in-law Juan and I have continued the tradition. There was one of those Christmases back in the day when I got the flu or something and missed the family gathering, so I was home alone and wrote a couple of Christmas carols. ‘Christmas Blues’ and ‘Christmas Cookies’. It was then that I decided I would like to complete a full album of homegrown Christmas carols. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed making it. You can grab it HERE, on Brushfire/Republic Records.

The arrangement of the instruments and technology was already extraordinary when the two much-discussed soloists Lionel Loueke (guitar, vocals) and Ziv Ravitz (drums) performed together at a club in the Swiss municipality of Muri on December 12, 2021. The drummer’s seat was only a few meters away from the guitarist’s chair, so to speak at eye level, in order to give the two musicians the best view of each other. The visual celebration of the dialogue on stage was created for a good reason: for the first time after the outbreak of the Covid pandemic, the direct encounter in front of the audience was made possible again.

Zach Bryan gave fans everywhere a present on Christmas Day with the release of his long-awaited Red Rocks live album. Aptly titled All My Homies Hate Ticketmaster, the live album was recorded at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado.
Zach Bryan has been very vocal about his opinions on Ticketmaster and their fees and price gouging lately. On Twitter, he blatantly shared his distaste for the company. He quote-tweeted a fan and wrote, “WE JUST HATE TICKETMASTER” in response.
One fan replied, “The more unhinged [Zach Bryan] gets about Ticketmaster, the more I want to buy all of his merch.” His unhingedness is well-deserved, though. Ticketmaster has been charging exorbitant fees and completely shutting down sales as they did with Taylor Swift’s new tour.
