On October 17, 2014, Billy Idol had released the studio album Kings & Queens of the Underground, which he had worked on together with Steve Stevens, and which told his story; at the same time, Idol also saw the album as a tribute to his companions from the wedding of punk. The tour for this album started on October 13, 2014 in Tempe and ended in July 2015.

BFI Live! contained 16 songs that had been recorded during this tour in different places of the world. The album was released as a 3-LP set for Record Store Day 2016. The special edition was limited to 2000 copies and numbered by hand. The album included a download card, which made it possible to download all the songs of the album as files from the Internet. As of May 25, 2017, further copies were offered via Idol’s official website, but these were not numbered and also did not have download codes or other attachments
