The music of Unsuk Chin is a magical realm in which new perspectives are constantly unfolding. Labyrinths of novel sounds and complex structures can be followed by moments of transcendental beauty. For us as an orchestra, this world poses certain challenges — indeed, it is part of Unsuk Chin’s style to test the limits of performing techniques. Or, to put it another way, she lets us show off our strengths. Her inventiveness exemplifies the inexhaustible vitality of today’s music. These qualities have made Unsuk Chin one of few composers with whom we’ve collaborated so frequently and productively.

Beginning in 2005, this relationship has brought forth the series of solo concertos and orchestral works docu- mented in this edition. Some of the performances have remained in our memory not least because of their special circumstances. For example, the Piano Concerto with Sunwook Kim as soloist and Sakari Oramo conducting was performed on an evening when we were able to appear again live in front of an audience after a long pandemic break. Another particularly memorable experience was our last tour of Asia with Sir Simon Rattle: in China, Korea and Japan we performed Chorós Chordón, a Berliner Philharmoniker Foundation commission that yielded a wonderful bridge between East and West.

Unsuk Chin’s cosmopolitanism is more than just that of a Korean woman who lives in Berlin. Her horizons are far broader, encompassing the most diverse cultures and intellectual disciplines. From ancient mythology to cosmolo- gy, her wide-ranging interests are repeatedly reflected in her music. That, too, makes our encounters with Unsuk Chin’s works an ongoing adventure. With this edition, we are delighted to share this stimulating journey with our audiences.
