From the Concerto to the Pastorale, the composer plays with codes and colours, sketching extraordinarily vivid soundscapes. Once again, the musicians of Les Siècles have succeeded in rediscovering the works’ original dynamic by using period instruments – and that changes everything!

Hélène Grimaud pays homage to Ukraine’s greatest living composer with an album of songs by Valentin Silvestrov. Joined by the young baritone Konstantin Krimmel, winner of the 2018 International Helmut Deutsch Lied Competition, Grimaud presents the gentle music and quiet nostalgia of some of the most exquisitely beautiful poetry ever written flows through this album. “Silent Songs” blends the voices of classic Russian, Ukrainian and English poets together o create a “harmony of mysterious power”, as a line from the Baratynsky poem by that opens the album has it. Valentin Silvestrov’s Silent Songs includes contemplative settings of verse by Russian poets Pushkin, Lermontov, Tyutchev, Baratynsky, Zhukovsky, Yesenin and Mandelstam, Ukrainian lyrics by Taras Shevchenko, and Russian translations of poetry by Keats and Shelley. Grimaud discovered Silvestrov’s Silent Songs almost 20 years ago when she received a recording of the complete song-cycle as a birthday gift. Enchanted by the composer’s music, she soon added a number of his piano pieces to her repertoire and began a long search for the ideal voice to partner in Silent Songs. Her search came to an end when she was introduced to German-Romanian baritone Konstantin Krimmel. “It is music which I find deeply touching in its authenticity and transparency of feelings,” observes Hélène Grimaud. “It is utterly poetic, never pretending to be something else. I am always happy to see how much it resonates with people.”

‘Hans Zimmer LIVE’ features more than two hours of new reimagined arrangements of some of the most popular compositions by the L.A.-based composer icon. Sony Classical is pleased to present the album as a 2-CD digipak, which contains a booklet with a personal note by Hans Zimmer and stories on how he met his fellow band musicians, illustrations, and photos. The album was recorded during the highly successful same-named concert tour in Europe in the spring of 2022 for which Zimmer created new ‘suites’ from some of his most recognizable themes and melodies from the Oscar-winning scores for ‘Dune’ and ‘The Lion King’, as well as such contemporary classics as ‘The Dark Knight’, ‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’, ‘Dunkirk’, ‘Gladiator’, ‘Inception’, ‘Interstellar’, ‘The Last Samurai’, ‘Man of Steel’, ‘James Bond: No Time to Die’, ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ and ‘Wonder Woman 1984’. Together with his 20 piece-band ‘The Disruptive Collective’ featuring a gallery of long-time musical companions, the Odessa Opera Orchestra and Choir, Hans Zimmer has created an epic musical spectacle melding atmospheric classical arrangements and electronic elements into the powerful sound of a rock band. Hans Zimmer plays multiple instruments on the album and is accompanied by musicians who have been working together with him for a long time such as the singers and composers Lisa Gerrard (‘Gladiator’), Lebo M. (‘The Lion King’) and Loire Cutler (‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’), cellist Tina Guo (‘Wonder Woman’) and Nick Glennie-Smith (musical director of the band). Other soloists include Andrew Kawczynski (synthesizer, percussion), Pedro Eustache (windwoods), Refi (vocalist), Rusanda Panfili (vocals) and many others.

2023 release. Musically, Fauna represents Haken at their most diverse. Taurus commences the album with it’s scraping heavy metal chords, as polyrhythmic as they are jagged. However, Ross’s melodic croon and the triumphant chorus are true Haken. Eyes Of Ebony is pure math rock, delicate in it’s start-stop clean guitar picking and chiming cymbals, while Island In The Clouds flaunts it’s bouncing bassline. Eighteen years deep, they’re still evolving and keeping their fans on their toes. Is there any truer definition of what making progressive rock means than that?

Zappa in New York is a live album by Frank Zappa. It was recorded at a series of concerts at the Palladium in New York City in December 1976.

Zappa originally intended to release the album in 1977, but the release was delayed due to disagreements between Zappa’s DiscReet Records label and Warner Bros. Records distribution. Only a small number of LPs and cassettes with Zappa’s intended track list were released in 1977. Shortly thereafter, Warner removed the song “Punky’s Whips” without permission. Warner also rearranged the track order before the album was released in 1978.

When Zappa’s distribution contract with Warner ended in 1982, the rights reverted to him. Zappa reissued the album as a remixed double CD in 1991, on which “Punky’s Whips” also reappeared. The CD version, however, contained a guitar playback version as well as four bonus tracks, including a significantly longer version of “Titties and Beer”.

Fake Names – Expendables (2023) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

Fake Names – Expendables (2023)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 28:30 minutes | 638 MB | Genre: Alternative Rock
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Epitaph

Fake Names is almost exactly what you want from a supergroup made of members of Minor Threat and Bad Religion (guitarist/vocalist Brian Baker), Refused and The (International) Noise Conspiracy (singer Dennis Lyxzén), Fugazi and Rites of Spring (drummer Brendan Canty), S.O.A and Embrace (guitarist/vocalist Michael Hampton), and Girls Against Boys and Soulside (bassist Johnny Temple): loud, fast, in-your-face. Recorded in just a week, the band’s second album is also a lesson in economy and resisting any urge to gild the lily. “Expendables” packs on Bad Religion-style harmonies and racing rhythm with Baker’s classic punk guitar sound and Lyxzén’s signature call-to-revolution lyrics: “Subservient pawns in a deadly game/ As we stand in line and wait our turn to be shut down/ What do we hope to find/ The strength, the courage to take the crown.” There’s an ass-shaking scream-along chorus to “Targets,” perhaps the most T(I)NC of the bunch. “Delete Myself” buzzes with nervous energy and backing vocals shouting the title at the end of each line. “What options are we having/ No choice this time/ And I hear what they’re saying/ ‘We’ve never been this free’/ The constant mantra of those/ Controlling me,” Lyxzén wails. But the frontman has always understood the politics of dancing, and he and his Fake Names bandmates serve up plenty of sugar with the medicine. Mod “Madtown” has a swinging rhythm and “Go” layers on handclaps and a Cheap Trick-ish chorus with its garage rock vibe. Indeed, the band is proudly vocal about its power-pop influences. “On our last record [2019’s Fake Names] the general influences were 70s U.K. punk and power-pop…” Baker has said. “The pop influences are a little more out front on this one and the production really helps it shine. It sounds more direct, more urgent.” There are other unexpected flourishes, too, like the big, woozy, theatrical breakdown—very Queen—that closes out “Expendables” and classic guitar-rock sounds on “Don’t Blame Yourself” and “Can’t Take It,” which also features an almost Mike Campbell (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers) riff and wildly jangling cymbals. Lyxzén really spits the words on that one—”I can’t take it/ We’re getting dumber by the day”—before ending in a mad Tweedlee and Tweedledum taunt of “I-I-I-I-I-I-I.” In typical Lyxzén style, so much of the lyrics are an urgent tracking of the pressures of the world that haunt the singer at all hours: the “ticking clock in my head” (“Caught in Between,” which shows off Canty’s strutting drum beat) and the call of “imaginary enemies” to “divide and conquer everyday” (thundering “Damage Done”). The whole thing closes down with the excellent “Too Little Too Late” and its killer chorus, bouncy syncopation and, believe it or not, emo-pop melody. “Just given enough/ So we’re able to work ourselves to death … those tiny crumbs not enough,” Lyxzén howls like some kind of punk-rock Woody Guthrie. – Shelly Ridenour

Fabio Bonizzoni: Performing the complete sonatas for violin and harpsichord is like embarking on a long hike; heavy, difficult, sometimes dangerous. Playing them is not an activity for lazy people: you need to enjoy making an effort. As in the mountains on difficult terrain, every step needs concentration, good balance, the ability to sense danger, to foresee the unstable stone. The complete cycle is like a long hike; one that leaves your legs tired and maybe painful the next day but at the same time one that enriches your eyes and soul with the beauty of ever-changing landscapes. It is like starting from a valley on soft grass and starting to ascend slowly, step by step, reaching the woods, seeing the type of trees changing. Eventually the forest is left behind and we are again on the grass, but more sparse now, and the first rocks are looming closer and closer. The snow is not far away either… There is not a moment or a view that is not memorable, that will not leave a significant imprint in our memory; a gem, a hidden flower, an unexpected harmony, a daring counterpoint, a melancholic melody. And as one does not need to be a geologist or a botanist to be moved by the beauties of the mountains, similarly one does not need to be a musician to listen passionately to these sonatas.

The Emil Brandqvist Trio has become a permanent fixture on the European jazz circuit and enjoys greater popularity with each album, reaching position 3 in the German jazz charts, for example. The success of the three Norsemen becomes really impressive when you look at the digital music world, because their compositions have now been streamed nearly 50 million times and made them, for example in North America, important representatives of Nordic jazz music, in which strong melodies and sophisticated arrangements combine to form concise and always atmospheric pieces. Gothenburg drummer and composer Emil Brandqvist and his trio partners Max Thornberg on double bass and Tuomas A. Turunen on piano, who have been constant for six albums now, move with dreamlike ease through worlds of sound that are as poetic as they are pictorial. It is fair to say that this trio is one of the few in Europe that have found a sound all their own, one that has been euphorically celebrated by audiences.
