Considered one of Nathan Davis’ best albums, and long a collector’s item, The Hip Walk was recorded in1965, a time when the Afro-American Davis lived in Europe, working with such legends as Kenny Clarke, Eric Dolphy, and Art Blakey. Nathan’s Kansas City school mate, trumpeter Carmell Jones comes along for the ride. Jones played trumpet on Horace Silver’s classic 1965 Song for My Father – ‘nuff said about his credentials! Nathan’s rhythm section represents the underpinning of one of the greatest big bands of the time, Kenny Clarke and Francy Boland, with Jimmy Woode. The Hip Walk struts along with outstanding solos over dense, dark chords. While Children Sleep reveals Davis as a superb balladeer. Train of Thought has something of Tad Dameron’s Super Jet in it as Davis, Jones, and Boland fly through the changes. Jerome Kern’s Yesterdays features Davis with a virtuoso exhibition of flute playing, whereas That Keycee Thing shows Davis’s debt to Trane on this hard-swinging modal piece. The beautiful Carmell’s Black Forest Waltz features Jones on his own composition in a fitting tribute to the MPS ethos. B’s Blues finds Nathan on soprano. Jones and Davis exchange fours on the way out. A superb album of soulful, swinging jazz – the perfect companion when you feel the need to get in the groove.

Recorder player Mutsuyuki Motomura’s latest album is titled “Portraits in French Baroque Sonatas”. Spreading the wings is to spread the wings of an insect, etc., so that it can be used as a specimen. The “Sonata”, which has a taste for France and Italy, is programmed like a beautiful picture with small pieces of personality mixed in.

Phylidor’s sonata is a French composition that uses the recorder as an instrument. Shedville’s work was published falsely as Vivaldi’s Op. Although the material is Italian, it is a unique piece that strongly reflects French Rococo taste. Marais’ work was originally for violin, viola da gamba, and harpsichord, but the violin part can almost be played by Traverso, and here he uses a recorder with the same range as Traverso. A work by Canavas, who was born in Italy and naturalized in France, and a descriptive piece by Couperin, the disc concludes with Ottoterre’s sonata.

The whole piece is like a beautiful painting or tapestry. All the songs are full of pleasant simplicity and elegance, and the intimate ensembles are also very likable.

Miranda’s debut solo album ‘Shenadune’ will be released July 7th, 2023.

Songs of the heart

Where legato, melodic, heartfelt singing and raw, ethereal songwriting meet. Miranda has sought to find her own unique voice and style from the tradition of song weavers such as Joni Mitchell, Vashti Bunyan, Sufjan Stevens, Regina Spektor, Feist, Joanna Newsom, and Anais Mitchell.

Like the bards of old, she braids the stories and musings of her own life as well as the inspiration in the world around her creating songs that reflect on motherhood, broken hearts, beauty and injustice. Her music is contemplative, full of longing, and takes the listener to an internal world. Miranda’s recordings are dreamy, lush, and filled with textural harmonies harkening back to her classical training, choral background, female duo Dagmar, and trio Rock Paper Scissors.

Originally from the spacious cornfields of Iowa, Miranda currently resides in the California Bay Area.

RIYL: Derek Bailey, David Bowie, Tim Buckley, John Cale, Michael Chapman, Lol Coxhill, Davey Graham, Steve Gunn, Van Morrison, Louis Moholo, Mike Osborne, Lou Reed, Sonny Sharrock & Television. Mike Cooper wrote his final songwriter record, a suite of gloaming glam-rock anthems performed with a spiritual jazz trio, while living on the Costa Tropical of Granada, Spain, an era when he was considering retiring from music altogether. A chance encounter and a last-ditch record deal convinced him to make one last album, which he recorded in 1974 at Pathway Studios in London, with “The Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World,” featuring the inventive South African jazz rhythm section of Louis Moholo and Harry Miller with UK saxophonist Mike Osborne. This first-ever reissue includes a bonus CD of Milan Live Acoustic 2018, a previously unreleased solo set that represents Cooper’s return, after forty-four years pursuing free improvisation and electronics, to a new, deconstructed approach to singing, steel guitar, and songcraft. The deluxe LP+CD edition also features a six-panel insert with additional artwork and an essay by the artist about both records. The deluxe 2xCD gatefold edition features an eight-panel version of the same insert. In the wake of his magisterial triptych of early 1970s avant-folk-rock records Trout Steel (1970), Places I Know (1971), and The Machine Gun Co. (1972) the British songwriter, guitarist, and fledgling improviser Mike Cooper retreated to the Costa Tropical of Granada, Spain. With no prospects for touring or recording again, his fiery band the Machine Gun Co. had disintegrated. Cooper sets the scene in his liner notes of the first-ever reissue of his unjustly forgotten next album Life and Death in Paradise (1974): No one came running with offers of fame and riches, and we fell apart, and I left the country and headed for the beach, disillusioned and a bit disorientated musically. I went to Almuñécar in Andalusia, a place I had been going since 1969, because a painter friend from Reading, Rowland Fade who made the collage in the gatefold of my earlier album Trout Steel had moved there in 1968. It was in this synthetic coastal “paradise,” unmoored and adrift, considering retiring from music altogether, that he began tentatively writing new songs. A chance encounter with producer Tony Hall, who offered Cooper a last-ditch record deal on Hall’s nascent Fresh Air label, convinced him to make one last album with the stipulation that he could assemble what he called “The Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World.” I told Tony that I would do it if I could hire some of my South African jazz musician friends that I had used on my Pye/Dawn albums and some friends from Reading that I still knew and admired. I called up Harry Miller, Louis Moholo, and Mike Osborne, who were in fact a trio at the time … and several local Reading heroes, including the singer-songwriter Terry Clarke. The result, recorded live with minimal overdubbing at Pathway Studios in London, was Life and Death in Paradise, an utterly singular suite of gloaming glam-rock anthems performed with a spiritual jazz trio comprising the inventive South African jazz rhythm section of Moholo and Miller with UK saxophonist Osborne. Unlike anything else in Cooper’s extensive catalog. Fresh Air fizzled, and Life and Death became Cooper’s final record as a songwriter, having pushed the form as far as he could. Drifting north from Spain back to the UK, he fell into the scene of the London Musicians Collective (LMC) including Paul Burwell, David Toop, and saxophonist Lol Coxhill, Cooper’s bandmate in the Recedents and fully embraced free improvisation.

„Et Lux“ is an alluring and timeless work for vocal ensemble and string quartet by leading German composer Wolfgang Rihm, here receiving its first recording.

The hour-long piece is dedicated to The Hilliard Ensemble and the Arditti Quartet who gave the world premiere in Cologne in November 2009 and its UK premiere later that month at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival. This pairing of a vocal group and a string quartet specializing in early music and contemporary music respectively is replicated by the artists on this ECM disc – the Cologne-based Minguet Quartet and the Belgian early music group, the Huelgas Ensemble whose founder, Paul van Nevel, conducts the recording.

„Et Lux“ emerges as if from centuries ago, and reflects upon the musical processes that have shaped it, including the ritual of the requiem: ‘What we have is not music remembered but music remembering.’ It incorporates text fragments of the Latin Requiem Mass, which appear as components of a progressively realized whole. ‘Great significance is displayed by the reappearance of specific groups of words, for example ‘et lux perpetua luceat’ (and let perpetual light shine upon them). Through circling reflection the comforting yet disturbing meaning of the words may become perceptible.’

Reviewing the premiere performance the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung praised the work’s interwoven musical and linguistic elements while the Daily Telegraph said of its UK premiere: ‘Beautifully paced and very moving’. ‘Et Lux’ was recorded in February 2014 in Antwerp. The CD booklet includes an introductory statement by Wolfgang Rihm, and liner notes by Paul Griffiths and Wolfgang Schreiber.

In A Grove is an opera in two parts; music by Christopher Cerrone, libretto by Stephanie Fleischmann. The opera is based on the classic short story, Rashōmon, by Japanese author, Ryūnosuke Akutagawa, which was adapted into a celebrated 1950 psychological thriller-crime film by legendary filmmaker Akira Kurosawa.

The opera is set within a mountainous ghost forest in the Pacific Northwest in 1921, unfolding within a barren, haunted landscape devastated by wildfire. The audience is a silent, unseen interlocutor, gathering testimony from seven witnesses and potential perpetrators of a crime. It’s a story about shifting perspectives on a single criminal act.

ME LOST ME delights in experimenting with songwriting and storytelling, creating a beguiling mix of soaring vocals and atmospheric electronics that playfully weave together disparate genres, drawing influence from folk, art pop, noise, ambient and improvised music. Hauntological in part, RPG (out on July 7th through Upset The Rhythm) is concerned with tales and with time – are we running out of it? Does insomnia cause a time loop? Do the pressures of masculinity prevent progress? Jayne Dent asks these questions and more on RPG, her homage to worldbuilding and the story as an artform, calling back to those oral traditions around a campfire, as well as modern day video games – bringing folk music into the present day as she does so.
