Reaching album number 10 is no small feat for any band, and with In The Court Of The Dragon Trivium join the exclusive club to have made it to this milestone. Formed in 1999, when vocalist/guitarist Matt Heafy was not old enough to drive, the Floridian quartet have always been about crusading for The Metal, blending the increasingly technical with the catchy and creating a sound that is immediately recognisable as their own. Tristan Prettyman took an extended break prior to making her new album Cedar + Gold. She traveled the globe, had surgery to remove polyps on her vocal cords, got engaged to her long-term boyfriend, dealt with the pain of his ending the engagement, and eventually questioned whether she even wanted to be a musician at all. With an artistry that lies in her finely etched lyrical details and intimate vocal performances, Prettyman spares no one, including herself, on songs like Say Anything, I Was Gonna Marry You, Come Clean, Glass Jar, and Never Say Never. As intense as some of the songs may be, the mood is tempered not only by playfully twisted tunes like first single My Oh My, but also by the album s warm, earthy sound, which Prettyman created with her producer Greg Wells (Adele, Katy Perry), who plays piano, bass, drums, and some guitar on the album.

Geri Allen is a natural choice, an already well-established collaborator with each member of Trio 3. Cyrille played on her 1984 debut recording as leader (The Printmakers) as well as more currently with her Mary Lou Williams Collective. Since first moving to New York from Detroit, Allen performed as a member of Lake’s ensembles throughout the ‘80s, from her first ever NYC gig with Lake’s Jump Up to four subsequent recordings under his leadership. Workman featured Allen on his 1995 recording Cerebral Caverns.
Needless to say, there was no need for formal introductions when this dynamic foursome entered the studio fresh off four straight nights performing at Birdland in New York. Admirably Trio 3 has neither given up their very essence or compromised their music or approach in this new chapter of the band, nor is Allen’s presence intrusive to any degree. As a matter of fact, the exact opposite: the four thrive as one under this unique union whose whole is much greater than the sum of its parts.
