After these three Fania stars’ success with their initial release of Asalto Navideño Vol. I, they rewarded us a year later with Asalto Navideño Vol. II. Many consider this album to be even better than the first. And it’s hard to argue with either squabble—while so many cherish Vol. I as the best Salsa Christmas album of all time. What is immediately recognized is the authentic jibaro sound produced by Hector, enriching all selections with the traditional delivery of earlier aguinaldo vocalist of the past. Willie Colon’s band is riveting throughout and the cuatro playing of Yomo Toro is unequaled as demonstrated in his solos during the recordings of “Arbolito” and “Tranquilidad.” The clever arrangements make for a definite danceable/traditionally styled cuts especially in the interpretations of classics like “La Banda,” “Doña Santos” and “Cantemos.” A large part of the Puerto Rican culture is the way the Boricuas celebrate the birth of Christ with parrandas and aguinaldos as they march through neighbors’ abodes to partake in all festivities offered. I’m sure that this was the target aimed at in the creation of these holiday gems. And by hundreds of thousands of their fans they scored a bullseye.

Crime Pays is a vintage collection of Willie Colón’s early lounge recordings from the late 1960s and early 1970s mainly with Héctor Lavoe, including Guajirón, El Titán, Que Lío and Eso Se Baila Así.

Craft Latino is proud to present an all-analog reissue of Crime Pays, an anthology of Willie Colón’s most influential songs from his first 4 albums. The ironically titled Crime Pays was a comment on the success of Colón’s carefully cultivated bad guy image that he sustained until the mid-1970s. The album contains nine key cuts from his first four albums. His 1967 debut album El Malo (The Bad Guy) is represented by his first hit, the mambo jazz instrumental “Jazzy” and the title track, a bomba-guaguancó ‘composed by Colón. “Jazzy” was co-penned by Colón and his African American pianist Dwight Brewster and bassist James Taylor.

When Siembra released in 1978, it was the second of four collaborations on Fania Records between salsa giants Willie Colón and Rubén Blades. The influential release set the salsa world on fire! It was one of few albums where almost every song became a hit at one time or another throughout the U.S. and Latin America.

The unconventional set delivered mostly songs with strong social messages and storytelling, while not common themes for salsa music, the messages resonated with Latinos around the world, making it a landmark release known as one of the most popular salsa albums in the history of Latin music. Siembra includes the Blades masterpiece “Pedro Navaja,” inspired by Bertolt Brecht’s “Threepenny Opera”, about a gangster shot to death in the barrio. The smash hit includes dramatic sounds of street noise, sirens and even a part of the chorus lyrics for the song “America” from the West Side Story film, where the background “coro” singers belt out “I like to live in America.” Other hits include “Buscando Guayaba” and “Plástico.”

In 2007, Siembra was inducted into the Latin GRAMMY® Hall of Fame, further establishing the title’s historical significance. Siembra has been remastered from the original analog master tapes for the first time.
