For the first time, the complete and legendary recordings are collected in a three disc release with full documentation and photos. Originally recorded in Stockholm in December 1976 by famed recording engineer Gert Palmcrantz, Jazz at the Pawnshop featured revolutionary audio recording techniques and jazz improvisation at its very best. The group, performing in the Pawnshop jazz club, was led by alto saxophone player Arne Domnérus, who was once described by Charlie Parker as “a very good player, almost as good as me.” Pianist Bengt Hallberg had impressed Stan Getz when moving through the strangest of keys without any effort, and the rhythm section of bass player Georg Riedel and drummer Egil Johansen was the greatest in Sweden at the time. L’accent mis par Eric Tanguy sur “l’imagination, la poésie et le monde intérieur” a contribué à faire de lui l’un des compositeurs français les plus joués aujourd’hui. S’inscrivant dans une lignée qui va de son mentor Henri Dutilleux à Messiaen et Debussy, il ne s’identifie à aucune “école” de composition. Son esthétique a également été façonnée par la musique de Sibelius et sa technique se caractérise par une utilisation complexe des modes. “Il y a de la rigueur et un but derrière ma musique”, dit-il, mais je ne m’attends pas à ce que l’auditeur ait à la décoder… C’est le sentiment qui compte”. Michael Bennett’s 1975 valentine to “gypsies”, the dancers who are often treated as so much mobile scenery in Broadway musicals, is sometimes considered to have broken new ground with its frank portraits of talented but frustrated performers. The score by Marvin Hamlisch and Edward Kleban is a favorite of “theater people” everywhere, but was designed to showcase the abilities of dancers rather than singers. Consequently, only the ballad “What I Did for Love” has had a life outside of the show’s context. This reissue of the original Broadway cast recording of A Chorus Line contained the previously unreleased “Montage, Pt. 1: Hello Twelve, Hello Thirteen, Hello Love”, plus extensive liner notes featuring memorabilia, cast listings, and previously unpublished photos.

Despite going into Guy Ritchie‘s Aladdin with almost no hope whatsoever, I ended up being won over by the movie. Fans of the original Aladdin won’t be disappointed, and while I’ve grown to be somewhat cynical about Disney remaking its animated classics, this one justifies its existence by making some interesting updates while staying true to its characters.
This past weekend, I attended the Aladdin press conference in Beverly Hills, and amid all of the expected answers about singing and dancing, collaborating on set, and the importance of maintaining cultural authenticity, we learned a few things about the movie and the people who made it. Example: director Guy Ritchie was given the nickname “Cry Ritchie” by stars Will Smith and Naomi Scott on the set because he apparently cried when he saw good takes.

In the mid-1980s, Donna Agrell acquired a rare Grenser & Wiesner bassoon, built in Dresden sometime around 1820. She has been using it for more than 1,500 performances since then, many of them with the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century, of which she has been a member since it was founded. The bassoon came in its original case, with an address label indicating that the instrument had been delivered to Stockholm. Further research into the Stockholm music scene during the early 19th century revealed that instruments from Grenser & Wiesner were popular in Sweden. One who swore by his bassoon from the company was Frans Preumayr, a musician of German origin who played in the orchestra of the Royal Opera, but also made a name for himself abroad as a bassoon virtuoso, garnering praise in London and on the continent. Such a gifted player naturally inspired composers to write for him, and these included his father-in-law, the clarinet virtuoso Berhard Henrik Crusell, the flamboyant music director at the Stockholm opera, Édouard Du Puy, and a young Franz Berwald, employed among the strings of the opera orchestra. For the present recording Donna Agrell has chosen three chamber works which were all premièred with Preumayr on the bassoon. She is joined by colleagues from the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century as well as by Ronald Brautigam – all of them playing period instruments – in Berwald’s celebrated Septet in B flat major and the less well-known Quartet for piano and winds, and in Du Puy’s Quintet for bassoon and strings.

Other notable signings for the Chicago label included The Chi-Lites, Manchild (featuring a young Kenneth ‘Babyface’ Edmonds), The Impressions, Sydney Joe Qualls, The Dells and Magnum Force.
