David Hazeltine makes his second contribution to Chesky’s acclaimed New York Sessions series with this stunning set of compositions by the revered Brazilian composer Antonio Carlos Jobim. The combination of the sophisticated elegance of a jazz piano trio, delicate arrangements and Chesky’s renowned recording techniques presents David Hazeltine (and Jobim) like you’ve never heard before. In the early part of his career Hazeltine backed luminaries including Eddie Harris, Sonny Stitt and Chet Baker, the latter encouraging Hazeltine to move to New York City. Arriving there in 1992, he formed his own trio with drummer Louis Hayes and bassist Peter Washington, served as musical director for Marlena Shaw, played with Slide Hampton’s Jazz Masters Big Band as well as partnering tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander. Personnel: David Hazeltine – (piano), Nat Reeves – (bass), Joe Farnsworth – (drums)

Joined by George Mraz on bass and Jason Brown on drums, Hazeltine is able to reformat these classics into high energy, sweet swinging, syncopated adaptations of their originals. The group tackles works by composers: Bach, Chopin, Debussy, Tchaikovsky, and Beethoven; restructuring their works all the while keeping them audibly recognizable.
