Contrary heroes: Mazeppa and Sardanapalo performed by Karabits and the Weimar Staatskapelle. Sardanapalo, who prefers wine and concubines to politics and warfare, and Mazeppa, who dies with glory, having endured pain and humiliation: dramatic literary models, impressively set to music by Franz Liszt. Written at the same time, these works represent Liszt’s ideas striving to unite literature and music, on the one hand modernising Italian opera and on the other advancing towards the symphonic poem in his orchestral writing. The Sardanapalo manuscript comprises the first act. For 170 years the material lay dormant in the Goethe and Schiller archive in Weimar: it was only in 2017 that David Trippett deciphered, edited and orchestrated the manuscript at the University of Cambridge.

When Franz Liszt took over the court orchestra in Weimar in 1848, the memory of Goethe, who had previously directed the court theatre, was still venerated. Liszt was therefore Goethe’s direct heir at Weimar – albeit as a musician. With his Faust Symphony, which was premiered on the same day as the inauguration of the Goethe and Schiller monument in front of the theatre, psychology made its way into music; Liszt’s ambition was the “renewal of music through its more intimate connection with poetry”. His Faust Symphony demonstrates the power of sound, of tone painting, to evoke a fantastical, epic and psychological world.

Tilman Sillescu is one of the most successful composers of our time for video games and film music. He has won many awards for his game scores, including compositions for the great ANNO series and Age of Empires 4. Now Sillescu has composed his first symphony and is releasing it on Genuin: the Staatskapelle Weimar has recorded the large-scale work under the direction of Christian Klaus Frank with full musical sensuality. The Symphony “Nachtlichter” is composed in four thematically interwoven movements: it is not a crossover between film music and symphonic music, but a veritable, unique tonal painting in terms of its musical language and structure!

This new recording from the Staatskapelle Weimar under Hansjorg Albrecht presents a rarely heard compilation of Richard Wagner’s themes from Tristan und Isolde, arranged for orchestra by Henk de Vlieger (b. 1953). This is Hansjorg Albrecht’s follow-up Wagner recording to his album Der Ring Ohne Worte (OC1872). The Staatkapelle Weimar dates back to 1491, making it one of the oldest orchestras in the world, and one that is more than familiar with the works of Richard Wagner.
