Psychedelic Porn Crumpets are back with their sixth studio album, set for release on 10th November 2023. The Australian psych-rock five-piece have been working on ‘Fronzoli’ – a title meaning ‘something unnecessary added as decoration’ – since the release of 2022’s ‘Night Gnomes’. ‘Dilemma Us From Evil’ is the latest single to be released from the record and is a prime example of Psychedelic Porn Crumpets’ mind-bending blend of heavy melodic guitars and harmonic lyrics and eccentric songwriting oeuvre. It follows the release of singles ‘Nootmare (K-I-L-L-I-N-G) Meow!’ and ‘(I’m a Kadaver) Alakazam’, which were released earlier this year. The album announcement arrives alongside the news that Psychedelic Porn Crumpets will be supporting Royal Blood on the Australian leg of their tour later this year. The record surges with the Perth-based band’s over-the-top, glittery sound, drawing influences from the likes of classic rock behemoths Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and The Beatles, as well as electronic experimental jazz. These rock influences are firmly on display in ‘Fronzoli’, with thrashy grunge tracks such as ‘Sierra Nevada’ and the frenetic ‘Hot! Heat! Wow! Hot!’ showcasing the band’s hyperactive guitars and offbeat lyrics. The band, who started out as friends, before coming together to pride themselves on their joyful and unpolished messiness when it comes to songwriting and production. “This record is my favourite creation to date,” says songwriter and frontman Jack McEwan, “Every nuance has been discussed, slandered and carefully contorted into place, it sporadically colours outside the lines, so you’re left with these extraverted squiggles.”

Within 11 seconds of clicking “play” on “Lava Lamp Pisco” it’s instantly apparent why Night Gnomes, the latest album from Psychedelic Porn Crumpets might be their greatest offering yet.

The track is a riffy monster that delivers a much-welcome Black Sabbath-style slap to the head. It’s big, shiny, sleek and irresistible. It’s Psychedelic Porn Crumpets giving their best and Jack McEwan the band’s fearless leader has the battle scars from the four-second harmonica solo to prove it.

“I hadn’t blown the harmonica in five years. It was just sitting on my desk,” he recalls. “The first thing I did was suck in all this dust, and I couldn’t talk for like a day. Afterwards, the rest of the band was like, ‘You have to scrap that. It’s so cheesy.’ Anyone under 30 hates it, but it has the dad-rock vibe, so I kept it in.”

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets – And Now for the Whatchamacallit (2019) [Official Digital Download 24bit/44,1kHz]

Go ahead and read that name… Psychedelic Porn Crumpets. Respond as needed, then set it to the side for about 33 minutes. Do likewise with And Now for the Whatchamacallit, a blandly ambiguous title likely stemming from some inside joke shared by its four creators. Behind this veil of overt psych nuttiness lies a rather impressive album made with plenty of craft and attention to detail. On their first two releases, the Australian combo developed a riffy 21st century take on guitar-based psych rock, filtering the progressive elements of forebears like Pink Floyd and Soft Machine through more contemporary heroes like Tame Impala and adding a dose of garage grit. Not nearly as wacky as their name suggests, they came out of the gate with the chops of a band who put in their time at the rehearsal space. On album number three, PPC tighten their approach, turning in a more muscular and intricate set with some blazing guitar work and clever melodies. The dueling axes of Jack McEwan and Luke Parish are at the heart of the band’s sound with the former also providing lead vocals. With its mighty guitarmonies and tuneful thump, the infectious “Bill’s Mandolin” is the most immediately pleasing highlight here, though the soaring, spacy pomp of “Social Candy” and the labyrinthine layers of “Native Tongue” also offer plenty in terms of their musicality. Tucked inside the gaps are interesting tonal layers and little experimental shifts that expand the dimensions of what are otherwise, tightly built rock songs with great fuzzed-out riffs. It’s a bit of a shame that the band’s name may turn potential fans away at the door, but PPC work pretty hard to overcome their self-imposed handicap and turn in an exciting and solidly built third LP. ~ Timothy Monger
