Nguyên Lê’s collaborates with vocalist Ngô Hồng Quang on Hà Nội Duo, an apparent study in contrasts as the two Vietnamese artists could not have had more different upbringings and musical education. And yet they found they had common goals, to express and share the soul of Vietnam with the wider world, bringing together the roots and the future of Vietnamese music. They each contribute three original songs to the album, rounded out by four traditional numbers. Sardinian-born trumpeter Paolo Fresu and bandoneonist Daniele di Bonaventura from Fermo, Italy, indicated the depth of their musical understanding on 2010’s Mistico Mediterraneo, a collaboration with Corsican singers A Filetta. Left to their own resources they explore a very broad range of material which includes original ballads by both men, improvisations, a Puccini theme from La Boheme, liturgical music, pieces by legendary Chilean songwriter Victor Jara and Uruguayan singer-songwriter Jaime Roos, music of Neapolitan composer Ernesto de Curtis, “O que sera” by Brazil’s Chico Buarque and more. Daniele Di Bonaventura has spent much of his creative life bringing aspects of jazz and music of South American traditions together, and Paolo Fresu is one of the outstanding lyrical voices of contemporary improvising. When Fresu plays muted trumpet, he makes a point of bringing Miles Davis to mind; at such moments, Di Bonaventura’s bandoneon becomes a chamber orchestra behind a soloist. The relationship between the instruments is continually changing throughout this attractive programme, recorded in the warm and spacious acoustics of Lugano’s Auditorio Stelio Molo RSI in May 2014, and produced by Manfred Eicher. (The session itself has already achieved a measure of renown: scenes from it appear in the new documentary Wenn aus dem Himmel by Italian filmmaker Fabrizio Ferraro, which is currently making the rounds of the festivals.)

Their first collaboration, entitled Mare Nostrum in 2007, was really rather magical. So, it was hardly surprising that Paolo Fresu, Richard Galliano and Jan Lundgren returned with Mare Nostrum II in 2016, an album that was just as superb as the last. The Sardinian trumpeter, French accordionist and Swedish pianist once again displayed their natural sense of lyricism and poetry in their highly refined jazz through reinterpretations of pieces by the likes of Satie and Monteverdi… But good things always come in threes; after having recorded Volume I in Italy and Volume II in France, it seemed only logical that this album was recorded in Sweden to complete the trilogy. In the middle of Winter 2019, Fresu, Galliano and Lundgren met up once again to mix their personal compositions together for Volume III as well as integrating two covers of soundtracks – Norman Jewison’s The Windmills of Your Mind by Michel Legrand for The Thomas Crown Affair and Quincy Jones’s Love Theme from The Getawayfrom Sam Peckinpah’s The Getaway. Their partnership reaches new heights, the spaces feel even more comfortable and the musicality of their improvisations is multiplied tenfold. – Clotilde Maréchal
