Olli Mustonen crowns his acclaimed cycle of Beethoven Piano Concertos with recordings of the famous concertos nos. 4 and 5. This is the first of three volumes featuring the five Beethoven Piano Concertos and the piano version of the Violin Concerto, all performed by Olli Mustonen in the role as soloist and conductor of the Tapiola Sinfonietta. Mustonen is known for delivering a fresh, visionary reading of popular standard repertoire music, such as Beethoven’s concertos which he has never recorded before. The chamber orchestra Tapiola Sinfonietta and Olli Mustonen have maintained a close relationship for years, accompanying this ambitious recording project with acclaimed tour performances. Mustonen, who is also a published composer, is playing his own cadenzas in the First Concerto.

Composing has always formed an integral part of the artistic life of pianist-conductor Olli Mustonen (b. 1967) and he first emerged as a symphonist in the early 2010s. This album by the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra with Olli Mustonen conducting contains two of his most latest symphonies, both dramatic works firmly rooted and continuing the tradition of the great classical composers. Seeking inspiration from multiple sources, the theme of Mustonen’s 2nd Symphony, ‘Johannes Angelos’ (2013), is the ancient city of Constantinople and its mysticism. Mustonen’s 3rd Symphony, ‘Taivaanvalot’ (Heavenly Lights) (2020) is based on a section in the Finnish national epic Kalevala and inspired by the cosmic and shamanistic elements in Finnish mythology. In this recording, the solo part is being sung by internationally acclaimed tenor Ian Bostridge.

This album features the acclaimed Finnish pianist Olli Mustonen with piano works by Alexander Scriabin, which have become his signature pieces in recital. The virtuoso sets of Etudes and Preludes cover a wide range of late-Romantic expressions, from heroic to religious, ecstatic to melancholic. The Sonata No. 10 is regarded as one of Scriabin’s greatest works. The collection culminates with the pianistic tour-de-force of Vers la flamme, an astonishing piece famously championed by the late Vladimir Horowitz.

This release is an important milestone in the collaboration between the Finnish composer and pianist Olli Mustonen and the Norwegian string quartet Engegård Quartet.

The recording includes Mustonen’s String Quartet No. 1, commissioned and premiered by the Engegård Quartet, and a slightly earlier work, the Piano Quintet. This is the first recording of both of these works.

Olli Mustonen is one of the Nordic countries’ most sought after musicians, as pianist, conductor and composer. His compositions are performed worldwide. While the Engegård Quartet has commissioned several works from Norwegian composers, the String Quartet No 1 is their first international commission.
