This set–one of at least a dozen full-length Toscas available, is a big, brash, unsubtle affair–not that there’s anything wrong with that. Long referred to as a “shabby little shocker,” Tosca is a brute of a work, with three huge central figures–the opera singer, Tosca, full of jealousy and passion; Cavaroadossi, the idealistic painter who loves her; and Scarpia, the creepy, amoral police chief who wants to get into Tosca’s–er–good graces. In the title role, Price is imperious and elegant, and if she’s not as nuanced as Callas, well, no one is. Domingo’s Cavaradossi ideally suits his voice, and he may not be very interesting, but he sounds great. Milnes is all snarling and lip curling as Scarpia–just right for my money–you really hate him by the time Tosca does him in. Mehta leads an exciting show, and while the orchestra occasionally threatens to drown out the singers, it never quite does. Go for it. –Robert Levine

The German conductor Otto Klemperer (1885-1973) was born in Breslau (now Wroclaw, Poland). He studied at the Frankfurt Conservatory, then at Berlin’s Klindworth-Scharwenka Conservatory, where he took lessons in composition and conducting from Pfitzner, making his debut in Berlin in 1906 with Offenbach’s Orphée aux enfers. On Mahler’s recommendation he became chorus master then conductor at Prague’s German Theatre (1907-10); between 1910 and 1917 he worked at the opera houses of Hamburg, Bremen and Strasbourg; he was musical director at Cologne (1917-24), Wiesbaden (1924-27) and Berlin’s Kroll Opera (1927–31), but left Nazi Germany in 1933, eventually settling in the USA, where he became conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic (1933-39).

Tuneful, exotically scored (by the conductor Rafael Fruhbeck de Burgos), and giving orchestra and recording engineers alike a chance to show their paces, the Suite Española makes highly entertaining listening. We are given here seven pieces from Albeniz’s original piano suite plus Cordoba, which is from the same composer’s Cantos de Espana. As this has a very fetching tune to end the record graciously, no one is likely to complain. But try the opening Castile for its glittering castanets or the Asturias with its eloquent and sonorous brass chords to offset the flurry of strings.
