Michel Legrand is a French musical composer, arranger, conductor, and jazz pianist. He is best known for his often haunting, jazz-tinged film music. This is an unusual album for Michel Legrand – a suite of tracks based around 20th Century standards – starting with older evergreens, and moving into some very hip tunes from the 60s! The orchestrations are amazing – with tones, colors, and rhythmic approaches that surpass conventional expectations for many of the tunes – and which are handled in a mixture of lushness and loneliness that recalls Legrand’s strongest soundtrack work of the time.

Foreign Affair is a 1958 album by Frankie Laine with the orchestra of Michel Legrand. High Fidelity commented that “Frankie Laine throbs his breathy way through an international potpourri in five languages — all marked with a heavy American accent.” The album was followed by a second collaboration with Legrand the next year, Reunion in Rhythm.
