In September 2013 Katatonia returned with Dethroned & Uncrowned released through Pledge Music and in partnership with Kscope, Peaceville’s sister label. Dethroned & Uncrowned, a reworking of 2012’s Dead End Kings, allowed the band to explore a more progressive sound, creating new moods and textures while still staying truthful to the core of the songs.

In May 2014 Katatonia will take their ‘Unplugged & Reworked’ set-up on the road for the first time, presenting an intimate evening with the band each night performing tracks from Dethroned & Uncrowned alongside atmospheric classics from their entire career, stripped and reworked.

Guitarist and founding member Anders Nyström comments: “Many people who appreciated how we “dethroned” and “uncrowned” last year’s ‘Dead End Kings’ album have been hoping and even insisting the same would also be done to one or more of our older albums. Admittedly, not likely to happen many a moon ago, at least not with a studio album, we are excited to let you know that by bringing this show on the road the same possibility now opens up that door, with a live version. So expect to hear stripped and reworked songs from our entire career and have them come into equation by thriving on our atmospheric vision, the ambience of some highly unusual venues and last but not least with your presence and choir to set the mood for a soothing experience. We’re already certain this will be the most different and remarkable thing we’ve ever done!”

Dead Air offers fans a full 88-minute set containing 20 tracks from the bands extensive and illustrious repertoire to date, with inclusions spanning two decades of dark progressive greatness, and essentially also debuting three of the City Burials album tracks in a live setting. The tracklisting itself contains a very literal selection of fan favourites overall, having being voted for exclusively by the bands worldwide fanbase, flawlessly flirting between earlier singles such as metallic anthems My Twin & July, to the stirring emotional grandeur of new song, Lacquer. The recording, mixing & engineering work was orchestrated by David Castillo, notable for his extensive body of work with Katatonia to date, and the performance itself was professionally filmed by Blackbox Video.

When Sweden’s Katatonia released the nearly conceptual Night Is the New Day in 2009, there was little doubt that they had nearly transcended metal — despite the fact that they engaged in thundering heaviness at will. Dead End Kings is a further exploration of the deeply atmospheric, melodic brand of “dark rock” offered on the earlier recording, but where the former was so focused on being an album that was greater than the sum of its parts, the latter is a collection of tightly written songs that work in virtually any sequential context, making for a more compelling listen. Produced by vocalist Jonas Renkse and guitarist Anders Nyström, and mixed by David Castillo, Dead End Kings offers a massive integration of sounds, textures, and architectures, organic and synthetic, ranging from lush softness to nearly bludgeoning moments of doom-laden density. A cello introduces “The Parting,” the set opener. It is answered by Nyström and Per Eriksson’s rumbling guitars, Daniel Liljekvist’s syncopated drumming, and Niklas Sandin’s thrumming bassline. It is further decorated by layers of dark aural thickness: synths, multi-tracked strings, and haunted ambiences courtesy of Frank Default. It is the door that opens into a swirling, shape-shifting universe, where sophisticated melodics underscore melancholic themes of isolation, loss, grief, death, loneliness, and existential angst — the sadness is pervasive. Norwegian vocalist Silje Wergeland of the Gathering adds a passionate duet vocal on “The One You Are Looking for Is Not Here.” “Hypnone,” with guitars at the forefront, highlighted by rolling tom-toms, adds a sinister tinge. While “The Racing Heart” is the only cut on the set that is a ballad proper — and a lovely one, too — “Buildings” is the only cut that could properly be called “metal.” The latter features churning guitar riffs, propulsive drumming, and urgent synths, in a stop-and-start cadence that alternates with bleak melodies and near menace. The latter half of the record features tracks — “Leech,” “Ambitions,” “Undo You” — that alternate between rockist balladry and doom, yet differ from one another a great deal. The harder “Lethean” and the gloomily anthemic “First Prayer” prefigure “Dead Letters,” the set’s finest cut, which can properly be called “prog” (not a criticism). With its various parts, ever-shifting dynamics, and blazing instrumental interludes, it sends the set off with a nearly majestic bang. Dead End Kings is uncompromising in its musical excellence, bleak vision, and dark, hunted beauty; it extends Katatonia’s reach exponentially. (more…)

Each venue on the tour was carefully chosen for its unique atmosphere. Sanctitude is a concert film recorded at one of these prestigious venues, in the stunning candle-lit setting of London’s Union Chapel, where they were joined on guitar & vocals by The Pineapple Thief frontman and songwriter Bruce Soord. The 80 minute set features 17 songs across the albums The Great Cold Distance, Viva Emptiness, Brave Murder Day, Last Fair Deal Gone Down and of course, Dead End Kings / Dethroned & Uncrowned, including fan favourite ‘Teargas’. The show closes with the sublime ‘The One You Are Looking For Is Not Here’ and a special guest appearance by Norwegian vocalist Silje Wergeland of Dutch legends The Gathering. This Blu-ray edition features the full 1 hour 20 minute live concert of 17 tracks (Stereo 24/48 LPCM, Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround, DTS 24/96 5.1 Surround, 5.1 Surround 24/96 MLP lossless mixes) plus the ‘Beyond The Chapel’ documentary with over 60 minutes of additional footage including brand new interviews.
