“The perfect casting” wrote Opera Magazine about Jakub Józef Orlinski’s interpretation of Orfeo in San Francisco. The Polish countertenor is tailor-made for the character of the mythical singer. Orfeo quickly developed into one of his signature roles, which Jakub Józef Orlinski has embodied in various productions around the world. Now the countertenor himself is releasing a recording of Gluck’s Orfeo & Euridice – as producer, casting director, artistic co-director (alongside conductor Stefan Plewniak) and, of course, interpreter of the main role.
“One of my big dreams as a student was the role of Orfeo,” confesses Jakub Józef Orlinski, “when I read the myth for the first time, my imagination went crazy, I saw images like those of Hieronymus Bosch before my eyes.” Performances in other people’s productions strengthened the singer’s desire to realize his very own vision of the myth: “It’s not easy to take on such a famous musical work. But I had a clear vision of what I wanted to do with it and how I would realize it”.
For his dream cast, Jakub Józef Orlinski recruited the young sopranos Elsa Dreisig as Euridice and Fatma Said as Amore, both winners of the OPUS KLASSIK. The original sound ensemble Il Giardino d’Amore will accompany them under the direction of Stefan Plewniak. The conductor has been Jakub Józef Orlinski’s “partner in crime” for many years.

Jakub Jozef Orlinski brings forgotten works back to today with Beyond: “We take you on a journey that leads to new places – beyond the places you know,” is how Jakub Josef Orlinski describes the idea behind his album Beyond. The multiple award-winning countertenor has already been acclaimed by international critics for his selection of works for his album Facce d’amore. Now he has put together an extraordinary program of vocal and instrumental works by 18 composers of the early Italian Baroque. They were significant figures in their day, but now their names are all but forgotten. Among the musicians still known today, besides Claudio Monteverdi, are certainly Giulio Caccini, Johann Caspar Kerll and Francesco Cavalli – among those hardly heard: Names like Pallavicino, Marini and Jarzebski.

After being spotted in the production of Cavalli’s opera, Erismena, at the Aix-en-Provence festival in 2017, Polish countertenor Jakub Józef Orliński quickly became an “international star” in the world of glitz and glamour when a video of his performance amassed over two million views on social media. He released his début album, Anima sacra, in 2018 and has now returned with his second recital, Facce d’amore.

For his first album as a soloist, the Polish countertenor Jakub Józef Orliński chose to explore some of the rarest repertoires, to the point that several of the pieces presented here are world premieres. As a result, we are introduced to composers who are almost unknown today: Gaetano Schiassi (1698-1754), Domènec Terradellas (1711-1751) and Nicola Fago (1677-1745), alongside other composers who are famous today such as Hasse, Zelenka or Durante. Helped by the bass-baritone Yannis François, Orliński covers a large amount of time, from the end of the 17th century to the last third of the 18th century, though solely in the spiritual domain, with Masses, Dixit Dominus or sacred oratorios. That said, the vocal and instrumental writing borrows from baroque, with its vocalisations, its embellishments and its brightness. On top of this, the ensemble il pomo d’oro performs the work with great confidence.

Since his 2018 solo debut, Anima Sacra, countertenor Jakub Józef Orliński has been increasingly visible in concert and on recordings. Here, Orliński offers a recording of Vivaldi’s Stabat Mater, RV 621, a core part of his voice ranges repertoire that tells the biblical story of Mary’s anguish at the cross, appropriately issued for the Easter season of 2022. This EP is accompanied by a short feature film written and directed by Sebastian Panczyk (on DVD for physical buyers and available digitally). The film portrays a modern interpretation of the Stabat Mater story alongside Orliński’s recording and gives him a chance to show off his acting ability. The countertenor is backed on this recording by the period-instrument ensemble Capella Cracoviensis and its director and organist, Jan Tomasz Adamus, an early music specialist. Capella Cracoviensis does well in this supporting role, and Orliński gives a justly sympathetic performance. The attractive qualities of his voice are fully on display, especially in the long melismatic sections, such as in the “Quis est homo” movement. With the re-emergence of the countertenor in recent times, it is not difficult to see why the charismatic Orliński has found success and a growing audience early in his career.
