Editors seemed to have found a renewed sense of creativity with 2019’s The Blanck Mass Sessions, their electronic companion collaboration to 2018’s Violence with producer/instrumentalist Benjamin John Power (aka Blanck Mass). It was a feeling of starting anew that the British group underlined by bringing Power on board as full-time bandmember for their seventh studio album, 2022’s EBM. An acronym for “Editors Blanck Mass,” EBM should appeal to both longtime fans of the group’s epic post-punk sound and anyone who perked up with the robust electronic dynamism that marked Blanck Mass Sessions. Without losing any of their distinctive, cinematically austere style, Editors have embraced a clubby, dare you say, fun exuberance. These are tsunami-level productions marked by shimmering waves of synthy distortion, doomy bass grooves, and as always, singer Tom Smith’s Teutonic baritone croon. Some cuts, like the hooky “Karma Climb” and “Strawberry Lemonade,” have that twangy guitar and whip-cracking Krautrock beat of classic Depeche Mode. Others, like the opening “Heart Attack,” are surprisingly cheeky, sounding something like a ’90s rave DJ’d by a Mario Brothers video game. Much of this leads to the mid-album “Silence,” a Homeric ballad in which Smith soars through the cosmos on a delicate rainbow of synth and chimes before crashing to the earth in a meteor shower of over-driven electric guitar squelch and digital distortion. It’s a bold, deeply emotive moment, evoking the heartfelt style of Peter Gabriel. That these tracks, as with all of EBM, feel both familiar and unexpectedly fresh speaks to the alchemical spark between Editors and Power.

‘The Weight of Your Love’ is the follow up to Editors’ two consecutive Number One UK albums, 2007’s ‘An End Has a Start’ and 2009’s ‘In This Light And on This Evening’. Their debut album, 2005’s ‘The Back Room’ has sold over half a million copies in the UK. · This is the first album to feature new members Justin Lockey and Elliott Williams, following the departure of founding member Chris Urbanowicz in 2012. It was recorded at Blackbird Studio in Nashville with producer Jacquire King (Tom Waits, Norah Jones, of Monsters And Men, Kings of Leon) and mixed by Craig Silvey (Arctic Monkeys, the Horrors, Arcade Fire, Bon Iver). Tom Smith has described ‘The Weight of Your Love’ as ‘having a foot in that alt rock / Americana world’ and of ‘feeling untouchable at times.’ Recorded mostly live, it contains their most direct songs to date and also features extra production from Clint Mansell on ‘Nothing’, rescored from the original to become what Tom and Ed Lay both describe as the ‘centerpiece’ of the album. Lyrically focused on love songs… that don’t adhere to the traditional love song type, the album sees Tom Smith sing in falsetto for the first time on ‘What Is This Thing Called Love’.

It is produced by Leo Abrahams (Wild Beasts, Florence & The Machine, Frightened Rabbit) and Editors with additional production from Benjamin John Power (Blanck Mass, Fuck Buttons) and mixed by Cenzo Townshend, except ‘Hallelujah (So Low)’ mixed by Alan Moulder.

An electronica-infused alternative version of their acclaimed top 10 album Violence, The Blank Mass Sessions cast the songs in a bold new light, offering a fascinating insight into the album’s creative process. The story of The Blanck Mass Sessions begins in 2017. Editors invited producer Benjamin John Power, aka Blanck Mass, to deconstruct the recordings that were to be the building blocks of Violence, and reassemble them in his signature saw-toothed experimental electronica. The band then enlisted producer Leo Abrahams to find the middle ground between the two recordings, fusing the raw emotion of their takes with the sparse ferocity of the Blanck Mass original productions. Whilst this fusion of the three creative influences went on to become Violence, Benjamin’s versions remained a work of art worthy of their own release, as frontman Tom Smith explains: “When we initially approached Ben to work with us on Violence we gave him free reign to do whatever he wanted. It seemed stupid to try and instill any boundaries or direction to him as he has such a singular, authored sound to everything he puts his hand to… so we left him to it. The results of that process being this release. A very visceral version of our album Violence.”

“In This Light and on This Evening” is the third studio album by English rock band Editors. The band had said the material would have a more raw and anthemic sound compared to their previous work. Following its release, the album debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart. In 2012 it was awarded a double gold certification from the Independent Music Companies Association.

Editors have never been a band who do what’s expected. When they emerged in the early 2000s, university friends from Birmingham, they were swept into a wave of indie groups with whom they had little in common beyond playing guitars. Then, after their 2005 Mercury Prize-shortlisted debut The Back Room and 2007 #1 follow-up An End Has A Start, they switched up their sound for synths. That was their first act of bravery, says frontman Tom Smith, and they’ve been taking risks ever since. “We’re quite used to that feeling of scaring our audience with new material,” he says with a smile.

“It seems to happen with every album,” agrees guitarist Justin Lockey. “We’ll do something that everyone really likes, and then we’ll go and do something else.”
