“Liederhalle Stuttgart ’69” comes from the archives of German broadcaster Südwestrundfun and features five tracks from one of Cannonball Adderley Quintet’s many post-World War II European performances. Pianist Joe Zawinul’s Rumpelstiltskin is edgy and upbeat, showcasing a hard-swinging side to the ensemble, while The Painted Dessert’s range of moods and tempos sees the five musicians working together to create something special and idiosyncratic.

Them Dirty Blues is an album by the Cannonball Adderley Quintet, recorded in 1960.

The AllMusic review by Al Campbell awarded the album 4 stars, stating: “Recorded in early 1960, Them Dirty Blues contains two classic jazz compositions.” The Penguin Guide to Jazz awarded the album 3⅓ stars, noting: “Them Dirty Blues debuts Nat’s ‘Work Song’ in the band’s book, as well as Bobby Timmons’s ‘Dat Dere’.”

The album includes two other tunes which have become jazz standards: “Del Sasser” and “Jeannine”.

Plus is an album by Cannonball Adderley Quintet released on the Riverside label featuring performances by Adderley with Nat Adderley, Wynton Kelly, Victor Feldman, Sam Jones and Louis Hayes.

The two additional tracks added on the CD reissue, an alternate take of “Lisa” and “O.P.”, were discovered in the mid-1980s. The latter is named after Oscar Pettiford, but features a different lineup; for instance, Adderley does not play on it. Producer Keepnews speculated that the second cellist playing was Ron Carter.

This 1959 album captured a famous date indeed, with Cannonball and brother Nat leading the way through This Here among other tunes. Throughout the decade when pop ruthlessly swept jazz aside, the Adderley brothers managed to stay in business with their distinctive “spirit of the south” – an optimistic, life-affirming style of modern jazz, bursting with colour yet steeped in the blues. The Liederhalle concert was the highlight of the Cannonball Adderley Quintet’s 1969 European tour.

From soul and blues (Sweet Emma, Oh Babe) to free-form contemporary (The Painted Desert) and lollypops cleverly combined with commercialism ((Work Song), the audience that night witnessed the sublime art of the quintet
