Among Handel’s seventeen English oratorios, Theodora (1750) is unique. The story is not taken from the Bible, but is about a Christian martyr. The characteristics of the oratorio are very negative: there is no national triumph and does not end in joy, hero and heroine are dying, the community with which the audience identifies is in mortal danger, and the final chorus is in a minor key. As a musical drama, this work can be seen as a direct ancestor of the “Dialogues des Carmélites”. At the age of 65, Handel created a work that was too radical and complex for most of his listeners at that time. Today, Theodora is regarded as a dramatic oratorio that is both deeply stimulating and powerfully moving as an “opera for the thinking person”.

Several composers have written music inspired by the story of Arianna (also commonly known as Ariadne) abandoned by Theseus on the island of Naxos. The American mezzo-soprano Kate Lindsey, lauded for her intelligent and luminous singing, chose to illustrate this story by means of three composers: Alessandro Scarlatti, Handel and Haydn and with the help of the Arcangelo ensemble, founded by harpsichordist and organist Jonathan Cohen. The archetype of the woman abandoned, the character of Arianna offers composers and performers alike vast expressive possibilities for an audience always eager to identify themselves with the scarred heroine.

Ich habe genug is a timeless, transcendental masterpiece: a profound expression of Christian faith at the very end of life. It demands artistry of a special order, and Iestyn Davies now joins the likes of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Lorraine Hunt Lieberson in the work’s distinguished discography. The couplings are equally ravishing performances of two other great solo cantatas, while the two orchestral sinfonias which complete the album will prove refreshingly familiar.

Although he already has a rich stage and recording career behind him, this is Tim Mead’s first solo album. ‘Juxtaposing the sacred and secular aspects of Vivaldi’s work, this programme explores the earthly passion of the divine and the heavenly beauty of love’, says the English countertenor. ‘When they are placed side by side, his highly individual approach reveals that these two worlds are closely intertwined, in music at once astonishing and highly virtuosic.’ With his partners from Arcangelo, directed by Jonathan Cohen, we hear him in the famous Nisi Dominus and the no less celebrated cantata Cessate, omai, cessate, alongside the Salve Regina RV618 and Amor, hai vinto.

Following the success of her discs of Romantic and Late Romantic repertoire, Vilde Frang has recorded Mozart’s Concertos Nos. 1 and 5 ‘Turkish’ and the Sinfonia Concertante K364, enabling music lovers to hear the Norwegian violinist perform Classical repertoire on disc for the first time. The impetus for this album was a 2012 orchestral tour of Asia conducted by Jonathan Cohen in which Vilde performed Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5. The vibrancy of their musical collaboration was something both artists were keen to repeat and commit to disc. Jonathan Cohen’s chamber orchestra, Arcangelo, proved the ideal partner, joined by violist Maxim Rysanov in the Sinfonia Concertante.

Recorded 8-10 August 2014, the collection of violin concertos assembled by conductor Cohen and Alina Ibragimova (b. 1985) – playing a splendid-toned 1738 Guarnerius – constitute both original compositions and some reconstructions. Recent scholarship attributes the familiar a minor and E Major Concerto to c. 1730, when Bach had assumed leadership of Telemann’s Leipzig Collegium Musicum. Antonio Vivaldi had instituted a mania for concertos of all sorts in the 1720s, and Bach seized the ritornello forms of the Italian master and concerted them to his own (Teutonic) usage. The outer movements of BWV 1041 retain the energetic, contrapuntal style that elaborates on a dance motif, while the C Major Andante unfolds an extended cantilena over a persistent bass line here rendered somewhat in the manner of a mandolin sonority. The finale, Allegro assai, proffers a 9/8 gigue that sounds quite Italianate, in a bravura style that crosses the string lines. Ibragimova’s sound, wiry and penetrating, has dazzling support from conductor Cohen and his lithe ensemble, the keen resonance provided – here and throughut – courtesy of Recording Engineer David Hinitt.

Composed around 1716 and named after the friend and contemporary of Handel’s who penned its texts, Hamburg poet Barthold Heinrich Brockes, Handel’s passion oratorio, Der für die Sünde der Welt gemarterte und Sterbende Jesus, was one of only two projects he set to German texts after his move to London in 1712. A free paraphrasing of the Passion narrative, drawing on all four gospels, in musical terms its fresh interests come thick and fast: a three-part opening Sinfonia which shares material with Handel’s Opus 3 Concerto in G Major; 28 arias, two duets and a trio ranging from warm serenity to impassioned outbursts; plus various choruses and chorales. All of which means that it’s music ripe with potential to be leaping out of the stereo from end to end, which is exactly what we have here from this performance from Jonathan Cohen and Arcangelo, captured with crisp naturalness at St Jude’s Church.

The sonata concertata form is perfectly illustrated in these trios by Dietrich Buxtehude which, according to Peter Wollny constitute ‘a landmark in the history of the sonata’. They provide a better understanding of a composer who has owed his fame chiefly associated to his cantatas and organ works, and to the admiration of the young Johann Sebastian Bach, who walked 400 kilometres to hear him play. After recording Buxtehude’s first set of chamber sonatas (ALPHA367), the musicians of Arcangelo (Sophie Gent, Jonathan Manson, Thomas Dunford and Jonathan Cohen) now revive the pieces from the second collection, published in 1696. It shows the multiple European influences (Baltic, Italian, German, French) that flourished in L”ubeck, the north German city where Buxtehude worked as organist of the Marienkirche, but also in Hamburg, where the music was type set.

For this recording of music by Buxtehude, Jonathan Cohen, founder of the ensemble Arcangelo, is joined by a distinguished trio, including two regulars on the Alpha label, Sophie Gent and Thomas Dunford, alongside the gambist Jonathan Manson. Although Dietrich Buxtehude is famous above all for his organ music and cantatas, and for the long journey the young Bach undertook to meet him, his chamber music is virtually unknown. In the mid-1690s, at the height of his fame, Buxtehude published two collections in rapid succession, each comprising seven sonatas for violin, viola da gamba and basso continuo. It is the works of the first collection (1694) – designated Opus 1 in the print – that Arcangelo has recorded here. These sonatas are characterised by pronounced experimental features in both the scoring and the handling of the instruments.
