This is the 18th album offered by Amina Figarova, and if you find influences from Eastern countries mixed with African children’s choirs as well as certain tonalities in which this choir sings, it’s simply due to the origins of this great musician, as she is native to Baku, Azerbaijan. The birth of Suite for Africa was motivated by Figarova’s visits to the annual Joy of Jazz festival in Johannesburg, South Africa. She discovered that the young musicians she met during master classes at the event were as talented as those elsewhere in the world but faced a shortage of instruments and opportunities to develop their talents. As she recalls, ‘I left thinking, ‘What can I do? How can I help?’ I decided to write a piece for a children’s choir, and perhaps they could become ambassadors for other children.’

Born in Baku, the pianist and composer Amina Figarova, with her sextet she co-founded with her husband, the flutist Brat Platteau, has been the guest of prestigious events such as Newport Jazz, New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival; while developing a tight-knit ensemble during those 18 years of extensive touring. After leaving their base in Rotterdam with her husband, moving to Queens in New York, she was back with their 12th album project called Twelve. In these tracks composed and arranged by Figarova, she articulated her impressions of the Big Apple. While in Blue Whispers, her 13th album, to be presented in their upcoming Istanbul concert, she fused her classical touch on keys with straight-ahead rhythms and bright harmonies, this time telling about social turmoil, her encounters with different people and life’s universal transitions. This album, which includes two songs commissioned by Jazz from Lincoln Center (“Pictures” and “The Traveller) will make its Turkish debut, thanks to Akbank Jazz Festival.

With this release Amina Figarova is celebrating the 20th anniverssary of her band.
In 1998, having a blast playing with a big band made up of students from Thelonius Monk’s Institute of Jazz, outdoors, surrounded by the gorgeous mountains of Aspen Snow Mass, I was thinking how much I wanted to create a smaller band that would have the same power of a big band, but with so much more room in it for each musician to shine.
