The only movie powered by AC/DC. This legendary concert film, covering a 1979 Paris concert during the Australian heavy metal band’s “Highway To Hell” tour showcases the power and precision that the quintet bring to vicious rockers like “Whole Lotta Rosie” and “Let There Be Rock.” Pixieish lead guitarist Angus Young, attired in his trademark school-boy’s uniform, takes center stage with his energetic antics and frenetic solos, while the rest of the band crank out their minimalist boogie with quiet determination. Interview segments and humorous backstage footage show another side to the thuggish musicians, especially AC/DC’s flamboyant lead singer Bon Scott, who died two months after this filmed concert.

AC/DC – Who Made Who (Remastered) (1986/2020) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

Who Made Who served as the soundtrack to the Stephen King film Maximum Overdrive, mixing three new tracks (two of them instrumentals) with popular selections from their catalog. Little mention is made of the movie itself (a small blurb on the back cover tells us this is “the official soundtrack from the Stephen King film Maximum Overdrive”), as Atlantic was likely content to let consumers perceive this as the next release from AC/DC. (The movie, to paraphrase the immortal Homer J., was the “suckiest bunch of trucks that ever sucked.”) The three new tracks were recorded in the same studio as Back In Black with producers Harry Vanda and George Young; the instrumentals are a cut above your usual soundtrack music, and “Who Made Who” rocks. Who Made Who was as close as AC/DC had come to releasing a greatest hits record, and some fans took it as such, gorging on the band’s greatness. I’ve read elsewhere that Stephen King picked these songs himself (to be taken with the usual grain of salt), and crabsodyinblue.com notes that the version of “For Those About To Rock (We Salute You)” was remixed for this movie (I can’t corroborate since I don’t have the original). Just something to chew on, since the first theory would explain the inclusion of “Ride On,” the second why “For Those About To Rock” sounds so crisp and calculated to my ears. In all honesty, Who Made Who doesn’t function any better as a catch-all of hits than Back In Black. The inclusion of “Sink The Pink” and “Shake Your Foundations” from Fly On The Wall is self-serving, the two new instrumentals largely unnecessary, and the packaging stingy (as most soundtracks are). But compared to the lackluster movie, it’s clear who the real kings are.

It was a major comeback for the band, featuring the hits “Thunderstruck” and “Are You Ready”, which reached #5 and #16 respectively on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Tracks Chart, and “Moneytalks”, which peaked at #23 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album went multi-platinum (5 million copies sold) and reached the US top ten. The album reached #2 on the US Billboard 200 and #4 in the UK, a smash commercial success that returned the band to the popularity of its glory years of the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Rock or Bust is the sixteenth studio album by Australian hard rock band AC/DC, released on 28 November 2014. It is their fifteenth internationally released studio album and the sixteenth to be released in Australia. Rock or Bust was the group’s first album without founding member and rhythm guitarist Malcolm Young, who had retired from the band in 2014 due to health concerns, although he co-wrote every track on the album. Bass guitarist Cliff Williams has also retired since Rock or Bust was released, while drummer Phil Rudd was unable to participate in the supporting tour after being sentenced to house arrest, and it is also the band’s final official studio album to feature vocalist Brian Johnson before he was forced to exit the band after the fifth leg of the album’s supporting tour as a result of hearing loss with original Guns N’ Roses lead singer Axl Rose taking his place as the full time lead singer in March 2016.

On ‘Power Up’, it takes less than 20 seconds for AC/DC to deliver the heavy rock sound that was first pioneered by, well, AC/DC. “The moment you realize / Those moments just pass you by/ Gonna take you to paradise,” comes the familiar howl of frontman Brian Johnson, bolstered by the guitars of Angus Young, on the pummelling ‘Realise’.

“Live at River Plate” is a live concert film documenting AC/DC’s Black Ice World Tour. The three concerts performed in December 2009 at the Estadio Antonio Vespucio Liberti in Buenos Aires, Argentina, which is the home stadium of Argentinian football club River Plate. It was directed by David Mallet, with Rocky Oldham as producer. The recording of the concerts required the use of 32 HD cameras; a company called Serpent Productions was responsible for filming and then producing the footage of the concerts. It was also the band’s last live album to feature rhythm guitarist Malcolm Young, and bassist Cliff Williams; Young, before his retirement from touring due to dementia five years later and his death in 2017, and Williams, who later left the band due to his retirement from the music industry in 2016.
