The three Suites recorded on this CD (BWV 1007, BWV 1008 and BWV 1010) were transcribed for guitar by the performers themselves, following a practice customary for Bach and absolutely familiar to him (the Fifth Suite for cello has come down to us in two versions, one for cello and one for lute: we are not sure which came first). One should therefore recognise the full aesthetic legitimacy of the guitar transcription of these compositions, a practice, moreover, that has now been established for decades. This procedure is ultimately legitimised by the primacy, in Bach’s language, of the harmonic and contrapuntal dimension over their sonic realisation, a primacy that led Ferruccio Busoni, for whom the concept of “transcription” occupies a position of absolute centrality in his aesthetic thought, to transcribe for piano not only numerous compositions for organ by Thomaskantor, but also the Chaconne from the Second Partita in D minor for solo violin. With specific regard to the guitar, one cannot fail to mention the name of Andrés Segovia, who transcribed for his instrument and recorded in 1946 the highly famous Chaconne.

Larry Goldings started piano lessons at the age of nine. It was not until about 1990 that he also turned to the Hammond B3. Goldings’ playing is characterized by an immense stylistic flexibility: he plays funk together with Maceo Parker, folk and pop music with colleagues such as James Taylor or Norah Jones, modern jazz with a blues foundation in combination with John Scofield and abstract jazz in a trio with Jack DeJohnette and John Scofield. In addition, he presented piano recordings of classical jazz standards reminiscent of James P. Johnson or Erroll Garner. The music of his own trio, in which Bill Stewart and Peter Bernstein often participate, also testifies to this versatility.

In 2016 Hannah Read asked me to sing harmonies and play guitar on a record she was making with bassist Jeff Picker, which later became her album Way Out I’ll Wander. Jeff introduced me to drummer John Fatum, and we started doing electric trio shows around Brooklyn. We had a Thursday night residency at Sunny’s Bar in Red Hook, just down the street from my apartment, which became a testing ground for our new material. Hannah would often join us on fiddle and harmonies, and Alec Spiegelman would stop by with a bass clarinet or tenor sax.

James became interested in music while attending high school at Milford Prep in Connecticut. Bob Dylan was a strong early influence. He later attended university in the United States but returned to Canada when all his friends were drafted.
In the mid-60’s he started a career as a folksinger in Ottawa. James was a self-taught musician who played both guitar and keyboards.
In the early 70’s his family left Martintown and resettled in Ottawa, were they urged James to “find himself”. He alternated between selling tires for his father and practicing music.
He started on the sidelines providing material for local groups. Some of his first compositions were played by local Ottawa groups Renaissance and September Dawn. He also tried folk singing in small clubs.
At one point he met Doug Orr of MRQ (Modern Rock Quartet) at a party. Orr suggested James learn the heritage of the Ottawa Valley and incorporate it into his songs. This was the beginning of what was to emerge as the “Denim” sound.

The tradition of bringing out New Year publications on 2 January 2, ‘Berchtold’s Day’, goes back as far as the seventeenth century. Societies and guilds provided printed books, illustrations or music to the young people of the city in return for a financial contribution, which went towards the heating of the society rooms. Founded in 1629, the Stadtbibliothek initiated the practice by distributing a New Year engraving by Hans Conrad Meyer with a poem by Johann Wilhelm Simmler for the year 1645, founding this form of New Year offering. A 2005 CD of piano music by the Winterthur composer Johann Carl Eschmann marked the revival of the old tradition in a new guise. The New Year release CD 2024 brings together works by six composers, male and female, all of whom except one were born and trained in French-speaking countries. The cellist Isabel Gehweiler is a prizewinner of the European Bursary for Young Artists and as a composer she has produced a body of work encompassing chamber music and orchestral compositions, which are regularly performed at international festivals.

In October 2006, experienced pianist Eddie Higgins embarked on a challenging project. Together with Jay Leonhart and Mark Taylor, Higgins went into the studio and recorded 50 love songs that had never been heard on any other album before. These tracks will be released on four albums. “You Are Too Beautiful” is the fourth in this series.
Considering how many albums Higgins recorded over the course of his life, it’s amazing that the three were able to find 50 famous tunes that he hadn’t yet recorded. It’s also amazing that a trio could successfully perform and record 50 tunes in four consecutive days. The trio’s achievement is reminiscent of the two marathon sessions of the Miles Davis Quintet, which produced four albums in the 1950s.
