Paul Butterfield was the first white harmonica player to develop a style original and powerful enough to place him in the pantheon of true blues greats. It’s impossible to overestimate the importance of the doors Butterfield opened: before he came to prominence, white American musicians treated the blues with cautious respect, afraid of coming off as inauthentic. This collection includes the studio tracks recorded between 1965 and 1971. (more…)

Drummer/producer Makaya McCraven brings together “future-is-now drumming” with his roots in jazz and world music to form his unique and powerful sound. Regarded as “one of Chicago’s most versatile and in demand drummers” (Chicago Reader) and described by Downbeat Magazine as “exceptional on the drums,” Makaya McCraven moves between genres at lightning speed. “In The Moment” is nearly 48 hours of live improvised performance recorded at 1 venue over 12 months and 28 shows – culled, cut, rendered, and remixed into 19 potent pieces of organic beat music. This is music made by a 21st century man who sees no need to suppress his hip hop chops or rock spirit in an effort to fit in and be dubbed a jazz drummer. (more…)

Analogue Productions is proud to present the definitive album by Jimmy Rogers, one of the three founders of Muddy Water’s first and greatest band, and a Chicago blues giant in his own right.

Jimmy, whose evocative and earthy guitar sound embodies Chicago Blues, is recognized as a writer of Chicago blues songs second only to Willie Dixon and is regarded as one of the greatest Chicago blues singers by fans and musical legends alike, including Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones, who credits Jimmy as being one of his three greatest musical influences along with Muddy Waters and Chuck Berry.

As the musical genre Jimmy pioneered is gaining mass popularity in the nineties, Jimmy’s classic guitar work has been heard by millions in television commercials featuring songs such as Rock Me by Muddy Waters and I Ain’t Superstitiousby Howlin’ Wolf.

Jimmy is joined on this album by an all-star group comprised of the legendary pianist Johnnie Johnson, who was the backbone of all Chuck Berry’s greatest hits, harmonica virtuoso Carey Bell, bassist Dave Myers, drummer Ted Harvey and lead guitarist Jimmy D. Lane. This recording won a W.C. Handy Award for the Best Traditional Blues Album in 1995. (more…)

It would be natural to assume the spawning ground for American blues music, Memphis Tennessee, would serve as the fuse that lit the explosion of what many regard as the artistic zenith of the Blues as a pure original art form. It was during the decade from 1945-55 when a seemingly
endless line of shouters and honkers etched their culture into the American landscape.

“ Daniel Barenboim is an expert in exploiting the impact of cyclical performances of composers works: This time he focuses his sharp intellect on all six of Anton Bruckners mature symphonies. Der Tagesspiegel described Barenboim’s performance of the works with the Staatskapelle Berlin on six nearly consecutive evenings in June 2010 as a superhuman accomplishment and went on to praise how: His Bruckner is conceived and performed very theatrically, like an opera without words.

Reviews: It could very well be that maestro Daniel Barenboim’s greatest contribution to music has been in filmed performances. Perhaps, none of his Wagner opera recordings, though “generally” excellent, could be considered reference versions. Yet, his filmed Ring and Parsifal (with Harry Kupfer), and three excellent Tristans (Ponnelle, the much missed Muller, and the recently departed enfant terrible Patrice Chereau) have no serious competition in the DVD market (it remains to be seen whether Barenboim’s 2010 Ring with Cassiers, coming to DVD this year, will hold its own). Barenboim’s recordings of the Beethoven piano sonatas, again, while A contender amongst contemporary pianists, will not retire the likes of Schnabel or Serkin. However, his filmed traversal is an epic and indispensable record of sound and vision. Likewise, the recent DVD production of the five Beethoven Piano Concertos with the Staatskapelle Berlin. The 2005 Ramallah Concert with his West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, despite the naysaying of a few hardened cynics, is one of the most joyously filmed musical celebrations extant. Though not generally known as a top conductor of Verdi, Debussy, Mahler, Schoenberg, or Boulez, Barenboim has collaborated in excellent filmed performances of the Requiem, La Mer, the 9th Symphony, Variations for Orchestra, and Notations. Of course, Barenboim has maintained a lifelong commitment to Bruckner with two complete cycles (the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Berlin Philharmonic). Both have their proponents and critics, possibly because like Barenboim himself, they are an uneven lot (and while all conductors are uneven, Barenboim is almost radically so). Regardless of one’s stance, few would argue that Barenboim’s way with Bruckner can displace acclaimed masters Furtwangler, Karajan, Kna, Jochum, Wand, Klemperer, Cleibidache, or Giulini (although I would subjectively argue a few of these). Accentus with Unitel Classics has produced Barenboim’s performances of the mature symphonies with Staatskapelle Berlin. So far, the 4th and 5th have been released and although Barenboim has considerably more extensive Brucknerian competition in the DVD/Blu-ray medium (Karajan, Wand, Celibidache) his first two entries have already met with critical accolades. Bruckner once said that his music, like his faith, was boundlessly expansive. With that in mind, the inherent spiritual quality and devout Catholicity of Bruckner cannot be blanketed, but there is little worry in this since such is rarely the case (although some have argued that Boulez’s Bruckner does just that). The trend has long and often been the reverse: promoting the transcendental qualities at the expense of the music’s corporal muscularity and direct earthiness (which, just about Catholic would say are far more pronounced tenets, despite the trappings, of that epically complex faith). While Barenboim acknowledges the composition’s religiosity through the music’s hushed qualities, he commendably keeps it latent and opts for a red-blooded, dramatic reading that emphasizes the theatrical German tradition that he belongs to (and that is the key to Barenboim, as opposed to the tiresome, often repeated claims that he is a mere Furtwangler clone. Barenboim has about as much in common with the likes of Klemperer and Walter as he does Furtwangler). The camerawork and sound are lucid and non-intrusive. This a welcome release to the DVD/Blu-ray market and can be acquired without reservations. Hopefully, symphonies 6-9 will be forthcoming in a timely manner.

Strictly judging from the lyrical sentiment of his recordings, it might be wise not to make Chicago guitarist Byther Smith angry. Smitty’s uncompromising songs are filled with threats of violence and ominous menace (the way blues used to be before the age of political correctness), sometimes to the point where his words don’t even rhyme. They don’t have to, either — you’re transfixed by the sheer intensity of his music.

Smith was so far outside the domestic blues loop that this Chicago-cut set only found release on a British logo, JSP. It was our loss — Smith is typically brusque and ominous, threatening to “Play the Blues on the Moon” and “Addressing the Nation with the Blues” as only he can. Nothing derivative about his lyrical muse — he’s intense to the point of allowing his words not to rhyme to make his points, while his lead guitar work is inevitably to the point. (more…)

• Umphrey’s McGee and TourGigs proudly present Rage. Riv. Repeat., a two-disc compilation of the best of the three-night run in Chicago, IL from February 20-22, 2014. Chitown faithful packed The Riv each night in anticipation of the hometown throw-down, as the band prepared a blend of rarities and fan-favorites for the crowd.

• The first disc is a mix between the first and second nights of the run. “Plunger” and “Much Obliged” featured intricate improv and the latter a vocal stew that revved the room to their feet. “Morning Song” was rendered beautifully with Brendan Bayliss on vocals, and Jake Cinninger led a clinic with his guitar craftsmanship on “The Floor” and “Syncopated Strangers.” Joel Cummins delivered note-for-note on “Kimble”, and this “Comma Later” just might be the finest ever captured on film.

• The second disc blends songs from nights two and three. Standout moments include Bayliss, Jake, and Stasik jamming in the Riv opera boxes during the opening track, “The Triple Wide.” “Hajimemashite” and “Glory” were melded together for the first time in seamless harmony. Bob Seger’s classic hit “Night Moves” got the acoustic treatment and a super-sized performance of “Der Bluten Kat” featured the collaborative UM improv fans have come to know and love. Disc two also features a slew of tunes making their TourGigs video debut, such as “Thin Air,” “Believe the Lie” and “Cherub Rock” featuring Jimmy Chamberlin of the Smashing Pumpkins. Another one for the books!

The Dukes of Dixieland is a New Orleans “Dixieland”-style revival band, originally formed in 1948 by brothers Frank Assunto, trumpet; Fred Assunto, trombone; and their father Papa Jac Assunto, trombone and banjo. Their first records featured Jack Maheu, clarinet; Stanley Mendelsohn, piano; Tommy Rundell, drums; and Barney Mallon, tuba and string bass. During its run the band also featured musicians such as jazz great clarinetist Pete Fountain, Jerry Fuller, Jim Hall, Herb Ellis, and Bob “Duke” Assunto [son].
Fred and Frank Assunto both died young, and the original Dukes of Dixieland disbanded in the early 1970s. In April 1974, Producer/Manager John Shoup restarted the DUKES of Dixieland with Connie Jones as leader, leased Louis Prima’s nightclub atop the Monteleone Hotel in the French Quarter and renamed it “DUKE’S PLACE.” The DUKES of Dixieland have not been affiliated with the Assunto Family since 1974, some 37 years ago.

Lollapalooza  is an annual music festival featuring popular alternative rock, heavy metal, punk rock and hip hop bands, dance and comedy performances and craft booths. It has also provided a platform for non-profit and political groups and various visual artists.

Conceived and created in 1991 by Jane’s Addiction singer Perry Farrell as a farewell tour for his band, Lollapalooza ran annually until 1997, and was revived in 2003. From its inception through 1997 and its revival in 2003, the festival toured North America. In 2004, the festival organizers decided to expand the dates to two days per city, but poor ticket sales forced the 2004 tour to be canceled. In 2005, Farrell and the William Morris Agency partnered up with Austin, Texas–based company Capital Sports Entertainment (now C3 Presents) and retooled it into its current format as a weekend destination festival in Grant Park, Chicago, Illinois.

In 2010 it was announced that Lollapalooza would debut outside of the United States, with a branch of the festival staged in Chile’s capital Santiago on April 2–3, 2011 where they partnered up with Santiago-based company Lotus. In 2011, the company Geo Events confirmed the Brazilian version of the event, which was held at the Jockey Club in São Paulo on 7 and 8 April 2012.In November 2014, the first European Lollapalooza was announced, which will be held at the former Tempelhof Airport in Berlin.

The music festival hosts more than 160,000 people over a two or three-day period. Lollapalooza has featured a diverse range of bands and has helped expose and popularize artists such as Dev, Rollins Band, Nine Inch Nails, Jane’s Addiction, The Smashing Pumpkins, Muse, Imagine Dragons, Babes in Toyland, Beastie Boys, Kings of Leon, Coldplay, Stone Temple Pilots, Depeche Mode, Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ministry, Pearl Jam, The Cure, Of Monsters and Men, Primus, The Killers, The National, Rage Against the Machine, Arcade Fire, Franz Ferdinand, X Japan, Audioslave, Soundgarden, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Cage the Elephant, Alice in Chains, Björk, Lorde, MGMT, Tool, The Black Keys, deadmau5, Hole, Body Count, Ice-T, Queens of the Stone Age, The Drums, The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, Calvin Harris, Thenewno2, Fishbone, Lady Gaga, Lucius, Betty Who, Butthole Surfers, and Scramble Campbell.
