In the part devoted to the beginning of the world, the Bible says that God first created heaven and earth, formless and empty. Darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. That is when God said: “Let there be light!” And day severed itself from night. That was the morning and evening of the first day.

A collection of canons from Telemann and Mozart.
“The Covid-19 pandemic impacted the arts in many diverse ways, not all detrimental. History has always seen the arts flourish in times of hardship, and this was no different, spawning some incredible innovations out of necessity. Soon after news of the virus’ spread came to light, the movie studios here in Los Angeles found a solution to the restraints of lockdowns and social distancing by helping players like me to set up temporary home studios. Miraculously, we were able to record full movie scores remotely, and I found myself learning basic engineering skills. With this new skillset that had become part of everyday life for many musicians, I was excited to realise that it was possible to play “together” with other musicians, despite not sharing a physical space, by recording separately. It suddenly occurred to me that the perfect fit for this “remote chamber music” was the musical canon.

Manafest – I Run With Wolves (2022)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/48 kHz | Time – 32:48 minutes | 455 MB | Genre: Alternative Rock, Alternative Metal, Rap Rock
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Manafest Productions Inc.
Chris Greenwood (best known as Manafest) is a rapper from Toronto Ontario Canada.
He is also a skater, which led to his career in hip hop; after an accident in 1998, he took time to focus on rap and was noticed by Trevor McNevan of Ontario-based band Thousand Foot Krutch. This led to his signing to an internationally distributed label, BEC Recordings, and debut release Epiphany, which was made primarily of West Coast hip hop with several rapcore outings in the vein of Limp Bizkit.
He released two independent albums, Mislead Youth (2001) and My Own Thing (2003), prior to Epiphany in 2005. He has toured in Canada, the United States and Ireland to date.
His second album, Glory, emphasized rap-rock elements with more Linkin Park-esque nu metal, and included more authentic hip hop stylings.
Central themes of Manafest’s music include nonconformity, hip hop culture, and walking with God.
Manafest says in regards to Glory that: “I wanted to allow all of my influences show on Glory. Musically, I wanted to blend the appeal of Linkin Park, Sum 41, and The Beastie Boys. Vocally, I wanted to merge that with popular hip hop à la Eminem and Kanye West. But beyond musical influence, I wanted to reflect on the issues around me in the most positive way possible. And whether I am talking about the loss of loved ones and abuse, or breakdancing and skate culture, it’s all for the glory of heaven. In the end, my prayer is that people would not simply bob their heads to this, but feel a very real sense of healing from the words. However, this record is not all serious. Some of my favorite tracks are the most lighthearted ones.”

Whether “Der Mond ist aufgegangen” or “Es klappert die Mühle”, whether “Der Mai ist gekommen” or “Schlafe, mein Prinzchen” – when you hear the titles of these folk songs alone, you immediately have the corresponding melody in your ear and the lyrics in your head. After all, generations of children have grown up with these catchy songs, and even as an adult, one likes to be touched again by the timelessness of these songs: “Folk songs seem to correspond to a kind of primordial tone of the human soul,” finds the German master pianist Martin Stadtfeld.
He, too, grew up with many folk songs, of course, and as the father of a child, he has been increasingly occupied with folk songs again in recent years. So he had the idea to arrange 30 of his favorite songs (and those of his son) for piano himself and record them for Sony Classical.
