African Head Charge – A Trip To Bolgatanga (2023)

African Head Charge return to On-U Sound with their first new album in twelve years. Titled A Trip To Bolgatanga, the recordings are led by founder member Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah, with close friend and co-conspirator Adrian Sherwood once again at the controls. A Trip to Bolgatanga is a stunning return, bringing together the talents of two masters who, after a hiatus, have created a rich album brimming with ideas and executed with finesse.
A Trip To Bolgatanga is a musical journey to Bonjo’s current hometown in north Ghana. A psychedelic travelogue across the landscape featuring their trademark hand percussion and group chanting augmented with rumbling bass, mutated horns, dubbed out effects, wild wah-wah, haunted voodoo dancehall, synthetic swells, disco congas, tumbling layers of electronic effects, blues-inflected woodwind, and funky organ. As with every On-U Sound production, each repeated listen reveals fresh detail, and its power won’t be really understood until heard on a big system, when it’ll reduce all competition to rubble.

Now, Son Lux is a band. A trio, to be exact; one that has meticulously woven together dizzying percussion, fraying guitar, symphonic bluster, and haunting vocals into a quaking and vivid post-pop (post-everything) burst called Bones. The fourth Son Lux album combines all of the architectural precision and aural inventiveness we’ve come to expect, with more immediacy and melody than ever. That’s all to do with the crew.

Rising at the end of the 20th Century, SOUNDGARDEN were loud, heavy, genuine, and unaffected by whatever was cool. Their mix of weighty power, soaring melodies and punk sneer made them ideal standard bearers for the grunge movement, but their towering musicianship and intelligent songcraft helped them transcend the era and remain iconic far beyond their origins in the Seattle scene. Arguably their finest and most comprehensive statement, “Superunknown” was the album that launched them to global mega-stardom. It contains some of the most lasting, meaningful, and heaviest songs they ever wrote.
“Superunknown Redux” presents new takes on all fifteen tracks from the seminal SOUNDGARDEN album from some of the loudest, coolest, and most eclectic bands across rock and metal today, along with a few less heavy but absolutely captivating contributions.

A lot of guitarists come in and out of LA for gig. One of the few guys I’ll make a point to see no matter what is Russell Malone. As the title of this latest album with Rick Germanson/p, Luke Sellick/b and Willie Jones III/dr states, Malone’s all about melody (as well as swing), even in the most adventurous of solos. Here, the songs are fairly concise, with a slinky bop take of Freddie Hubbard’s “One The Real Side” and a nimble “Jive Hoot” pulsating like a V8 engine. His art of using space is like Monet on “Haunted Heart” and the delicate “Message to Jim Hall.” Jones supplies velvet brushes on the cozy read of the soul hit “Saving All My Love For You” while he does a nice groove with Sellick on the hip “Nice Lady”. Malone does a couple solo arias as well, making silence a sound on “When A Man Loves A Woman” and being as delicate as handling a newborn on “He’s Gone Away”. You could take years studying this session, and keep learning things.

As their album titles suggest, textures are vitally important to Ritual Howls’ music. Turkish Leather telegraphed the rough sensuality and dusty drama of its songs, while Into the Water hinted at the cold depths of their third album. Rendered Armor’s title is just as evocative of the streamlined, hard-edged sound of the trio’s fourth full-length. This aesthetic is most pronounced on “Love Cuts,” where the band’s love of crushing industrial beats comes to the fore, but it also extends to “Thought Talk,” a gloomy, kinetic standout that delivers a subtler — but still very danceable — version of their music. Despite the restraint they show on Rendered Armor, they still play with a range of sounds and moods. “Alone Together” begins the album by paring their music down to the bare essentials of a spiky drum pattern and a twangy guitar riff; the recriminations of “Mother of the Dead” are so stark that they border on coldwave; and the way Ritual Howls elevate the whispery menace of “I Can Hear Your Tears” with unusual percussion, including bongos, reaffirms that they are much more eclectic than might be expected. Occasionally, they do unleash all of their drama, most strikingly on “The Offering,” where spaghetti western guitars and sighing synths provide the perfect complement to the relentless beats, and on the finale, “All I’ve Known,” which may be the closest they’ve come to a pop song (albeit a pitch-black one) yet. As Ritual Howls incorporate different shades and kinds of darkness into their music, Rendered Armor proves they grow more authoritative with each release. ~ Heather Phares

Ray Brown has many great contributions to jazz as a leader and a sideman, but one additional way in which he helped jazz was his encouraging Gene Harris to give up his early retirement and go back out on the road. The pianist was a part of Brown’s groups for several years before he formed a working quartet and became a leader for good once again. This 1988 concert at a since-defunct Santa Monica night club (co-owned by Brown) finds the two, along with drummer Jeff Hamilton, at the top of their game. A phone ringing in the background distracts momentarily from Brown’s opening solo in his composition “The Real Blues,” during which Harris repeats a bluesy tremolo, which may be an inside joke about the early distraction. Harris take a blues-drenched approach to “Mona Lisa” before giving way to the leader’s solo, while his lyrical approach to “Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man” is shimmering. Hamilton’s soft brushes are prominent in “Little Darlin’,” but his explosive playing provides a powerful pulse to the very unusual strutting take of “It Don’t Mean a Thing.” This extremely satisfying CD is warmly recommended. 4/5 ~~AllMusic Review by Ken Dryden
