Artistically breathtaking and engagingly intimate, the vocal music of the early Italian Baroque was an exercise in close artistic collaboration. Bringing together three of the most renowned practitioners of historically-appropriate performance of Early Music and Baroque repertoires, the Sono Luminus release of Io Vidi in Terra provides a rare immersion into a mysterious world that, despite its relative obscurity in the perspectives of 21st-Century observers, shaped almost every aspect of music as it blossomed in subsequent generations. The package will be a 2-disc set, containing a Pure Audio Blu-ray™ Surround Sound disc as well as a standard CD.
Born in Brazil, countertenor José Lemos pursued musical studies in the United States, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Music from the College of Charleston (South Carolina) and a Master’s Degree in Opera Performance from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. Awarded Tanglewood Music Fellowships in both 2003 and 2004, his first operatic performances in the United States were in Robert Zuidam’s Rage d’Amours and Benjamin Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Tanglewood. He also won both the First Prize and the Audience Prize at the 2003 International Baroque Singing Competition in Chimay, Belgium. From those beginnings, José’s operatic career has flourished with lauded appearances at Opernhaus Zürich as Nireno in Händel’s Giulio Cesare and Narcisco in the same composer’s Agrippina, both under the baton of Marc Minkowski; an extensive tour with Stefano Landi’s Il Sant’Alessio in a production with Les Arts Florissants and William Christie, to name just a few.
Mr. Lemos has recorded multiple albums with Dorian/Sono Luminus over the years. With Baltimore Consort, he recorded Adío España (DSL-90901), a recital of music from Spain’s Age of Discovery. Additionally, he recordedRomance (DSL-90708) and Sol y Luna (DSL-92118) with Brio, featuring the exotic music of Sephardic Jews in Spain. José is thrilled to share his passion for the Italian vocal music of the 17th Century with friends and frequent collaborators Deborah Fox, theorbist and baroque guitarist, and GRAMMY®nominated harpsichordist Jory Vinikour, as well as with listeners throughout the world. Legendary Swedish symphonic progressive rock band ÄNGLAGÅRD is proud to present their first ever professionally filmed concert, set to be released worldwide on February 10th, 2017. “Live: Made in Norway” was captured at Musikkflekken, Sandvika, Norway on February 21st, 2015, marking the band’s return to Norway stages after an absence of 23 years. Edited by Martin Gustafsson, with audio production and mixing by world renowned audio engineer Alar Suurna, and art design and production supervision by band’s long-time collaborator Joel Barrios, the two-hour performance is a stellar capturing of live art through and through; a perfect testimony of Änglagård’s unique take on progressive rock, showcasing their swirling, angular crescendos along with frenetic rhythms and howling mellotron, blended with truly emotional sudden softer passages. A sonic rollercoaster of aggressive music in odd meter, subtle parts and melancholic beauty, building suspense and abrupt stops, with a wondrous interplay of sounds, this visual presentation is definitely not for the faint-hearted. Änglagård’s extreme level of delicacy in phrasing and dynamic is a tough match to beat in progressive music and should hold up even in the face of the snootiest of music connoisseurs. (more…)

Although Billy Joel never was a critic’s favorite, the pianist emerged as one of the most popular singer/songwriters of the latter half of the ’70s. Joel’s music consistently demonstrates an affection for Beatlesque hooks and a flair for Tin Pan Alley and Broadway melodies. His fusion of two distinct eras made him a superstar in the late ’70s and ’80s, as he racked an impressive string of multi-platinum albums and hit singles.

British heavy metal legends SAXON will release “Let Me Feel Your Power”, their tenth live album, on September 23 in Europe and October 7 in North America via UDR Music. The 16-track album was recorded in Munich, Germany during November 2015 and Brighton in January 2016, with bonus material from Chicago in September 2015.

In a 2015 interview with 100 Percent Rock magazine, SAXON frontman Biff Byford spoke about the difficulty of putting together setlist for the band’s tours. He said: “Yeah, it is difficult with the setlist, because you can’t play for as long as we’d like. It’s difficult to please people, because you get quite a lot of new fans that come to concerts, they want to hear the old songs, and some of the guys that have been coming for years have heard the old songs too much and they want something new, so it’s a nightmare. “You can never please everyone and it’s actually a bit stupid trying, really,” he continued. “Just put some good songs together and promote the new album, and that’s where to be, really.”

Byford added that he is mostly proud of all SAXON has achieved in its forty-year existence. Have SAXON achieved everything I initially dreamed the band could? More or less,” he said. “There were certainly countries we probably could have been bigger in. Australia’s one of them, places like that. I don’t think our management at that time really thought we’d ever be anything more than a British band, you know what I mean? I don’t think their vision included the world. It is a shame, because I think ‘Wheels Of Steel’ and those albums could have been much more in people’s minds outside Europe. I mean, America was all right, we did okay in America, but other countries could have gone better, I think. But I think we’ve achieved most everything, really. You know, we’re still making great albums, so I suppose that’s something.”

Yo-Yo Ma & The Silk Road Ensemble – When Strangers Meet (2002) [SACD to FLAC 24bit/88,2kHz]

Yo-Yo Ma & The Silk Road Ensemble – When Strangers Meet (2002)
PS3 Rip | FLAC tracks 2.0 24bit/88.2 kHz | Front+CD | 1.38 GB

This disc introduces Yo-Yo Ma’s latest and most ambitious adventure, the Silk Road Project. It explores the cultures that flourished along the Silk Road, the ancient trade route that for centuries connected Europe and the East. Founded by Ma in 1998, the project aims to create connections, mutual trust, and cultural interchange between people from different parts of the world through their only shared language: music. This recording includes music from Mongolia, China, Persia, Japan, Iran, Azerbaijan, and an improvisation on an Italian Renaissance street song, performed by musicians from all those countries, as well as America, on both Eastern and Western instruments. Ma, who participates in every piece either as soloist or part of the ensemble, plays cello and a Mongolian “horse-head fiddle.” There is also a Mongolian soprano, who sings a traditional song native to her region. For the uninitiated Western listener, the music requires some getting used to. Much of it is based on rhythmic ostinatos. The melodies use Oriental scales; the intonation is untempered; the music seems all color, texture, and atmosphere, without what might be called themes; and repetition takes the place of development. Contrast is achieved through sudden change, buildup by adding instruments. However, the music is often beautiful, delicate, dreamy, or peaceful; every listener will find his or her own favorite pieces. The playing is splendid, with much inventive improvisation. Inevitably, Ma’s tone and personality stand out, but he never dominates in fact or spirit. The booklet offers essays by Ma and the project’s musicologist, Theodore Levin, photographs of the players, and drawings of the Eastern instruments. (more…)

Neeme Jarvi, Royal Scottish National Orchestra – Wagner: Tristan Und Isolde (2011) {PS3 ISO + FLAC}

Royal Scottish National Orchestra / Neeme Järvi – Wagner: Tristan Und Isolde (2011)
PS3 Rip | SACD ISO | DST64 2.0 & DST64 5.0 >1-bit/2.8224 MHz | Front+Back | 3.36 GB
FLAC Image+CUE 2.0 24bit/88.2 kHz | Front+Back | 1.11 GB

The popular Prelude & the so-called Liebestod (“Mild und Leise”) from Richard Wagner’s music drama Tristan und Isolde are the most familiar parts orchestras play, most often in the 1859 concert arrangement by Wagner. (He preferred that the term Liebestod be applied to the Prelude only, & originally titled his concert version Liebestod und Verklärung, or “Love-death & Transfiguration.”) The featured work of this Chandos SACD is the 1994 suite arranged by Henk de Vlieger, fashioned from key parts of the entire opera, not just the beginning & end. Tristan und Isolde: An Orchestral Passion is a lengthy tone poem that includes key passages, in much the same manner as de Vlieger’s other symphonic syntheses on Der Ring des Nibelungen, Parsifal, & Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. These instrumental potpourris have all been performed by the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, for whom de Vlieger serves double duty as arranger & percussionist, & the recordings of the 1st 3 suites with Edo de Waart show enthusiastic support & commitment to de Vlieger’s work. Add to that the recordings that Neeme Järvi & the Royal Scottish National Orchestra have made of The Ring, Parsifal, & now Tristan und Isolde, & it becomes clear that there’s a market for these recordings of “operas without words.” Since the music is faithfully adapted from the original score, & arranged into a coherent version that still communicates the broad outlines of the drama, there is little to debate over de Vlieger’s choices. Though he’s not noted as a Wagnerian conductor, Järvi’s interpretation is perfectly acceptable & coherent for most casual listeners’ purposes. Indeed, purists who appreciate the original music dramas really have no need for this arrangement, though newcomers who are daunted by Wagner’s texts & operatic singing may want to try this recording as a means to become better acquainted with 1 of the most influential works in western music history. This album is filled out with 2 of Wagner’s early opera overtures, Das Liebesverbot & Die Feen. (more…)

Neeme Jarvi, Royal Scottish National Orchestra – Wagner: Parsifal (2010) {PS3 ISO + FLAC}

Royal Scottish National Orchestra / Neeme Jarvi – Wagner: Parsifal (2010)

Most of the familiar orchestral versions of Richard Wagner’s operatic music were arranged either by him or his followers in the 19th century, so the Overture & Venusberg Music from Tannhäuser & the Prelude to Act III from Lohengrin have long been performed in these special concert formats. But the main work of this SACD is the 1993 suite arranged by Henk de Vlieger, Parsifal, an Orchestral Quest, which is a fresh adaptation of the key moments from Wagner’s final music drama. The work was commissioned by the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, after de Vlieger, the ensemble’s percussionist, had successfully arranged music from Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen into a similar orchestral vehicle for them. Parsifal, an Orchestral Quest was premiered on RCA in 1997 by Edo de Waart, & Neeme Järvi leads the 2nd recorded performance on this 2010 release on Chandos. Since the music is faithfully adapted from the original score & arranged into a coherent instrumental version that still communicates the broad outlines of the drama, there is little to debate over de Vlieger’s choices, & Järvi’s performance with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra is fully satisfying. This album provides a balanced program of Wagner’s orchestral music, from the somber meditations of Parsifal to the lascivious passions of the bacchanalia from Tannhäuser & the stirring emotions in the Prelude to Act III from Lohengrin, so listeners can expect a captivating listening experience that may also inspire them to seek out the full operas.
