The French baritone Florian Sempey has established himself as a key player on today’s operatic scene. For his first solo recital, Rossini was the obvious choice, first of all because he has already performed the title role in Il barbiere di Siviglia in the leading opera houses, from Paris to London, and of course by way of Orange and Pesaro. But there is another reason: “Rossini was the first composer’s name I heard in my life. At my grandparents’ house, there was a bust above the piano, on a little rococo display stand” – the bust that appears on the cover of this album.

The Choralis Constantinus is one of the most important motets collections of the Renaissance period. Heinrich Isaac created it in 1508 as a commission from the Constance cathedral chapter. A large part of the 375 motets is largely unknown today. The ensemble cantissimo has been working intensively on the opus for many years. Under the direction of Markus Utz, a selection of festive motets are now presented here, which bear impressive witness to the first musical heyday of the Renaissance period. “A great conductor,” Gramophone Magazine hailed the first album by Emmanuelle Haïm and Le Concert dʼAstrée back in 2002. In November 2021, the conductor now celebrated the 20th anniversary of her ensemble with two charity concerts in Berlin and Paris. The two anniversary concerts with excerpts from baroque operas by Handel, Rameau, Purcell, Vivaldi and Campra now appear as a live recording on the album “20 ans – Une nouvelle fête Baroque!” Saying “A 20-year anniversary and 20 years of success deserve a proper celebration,” Emmanuelle Haïm gathered on stage a who’s who of the classical scene: more than twenty renowned soloists performed, including sopranos Natalie Dessay, Sandrine Piau and Sabine Devieilhe, tenors Michael Spyres and Rolando Villazón, and bass Andrea Mastroni. Haïm’s former mentor, Sir Simon Rattle, also took the opportunity to take the baton as a guest. The conducting style of the trained harpsichordist is based on the way early music is played. Emmanuelle Haïm explains it this way: “In baroque music, the role of the conductor is within the orchestra. He plays an instrument himself and is part of the music together with the other musicians. In Le Concert dʼAstrée, everyone speaks very openly – and I’m not the only one who says what’s being done.” Her way of working is also appreciated by major symphony orchestras. And so Emmanuelle Haïm has already conducted many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonic Orchestras and the London Symphony Orchestra.

The debut album from German-Spanish-Malaysion violinist Elias David Moncado focusses on works by Hindemith, Bartók, and Poulenc. “As an artist, I find it fascinating to observe how composers reacted to current affairs: whenever they had to deal with a totalitarian regime, persecution, resistance, or exile. Each of these three composers dealt in some special way with psychological stress and anxiety in their lives. In the Poulenc Sonata I find a concealed passion, harsh brutality, and overwhelming pain. The Hindemith Sonata contrasts and juxtaposes sombre, dancelike, and heroic elements. The timbres in the Bartok Sonata are incredibly elaborate, and a general mood of suffering imbues the entire work.

Jacob Long’s third Earthen Sea outing for Kranky, Ghost Poems, further refines his fragile, fractured palette into fluttering arrhythmias of dust, percussion, and yearning.
Composed during the first wave of lockdowns in New York, the pieces took shape patiently from samples of piano, texture, and domestic sounds (sink splashing, room tone, clinking objects), filtered through live FX to imbue them with an intuitive, immaterial feel. Wisps of melody splinter, shimmer, and refract, like light on water; pulses accrue and dissipate, as if mapping shifting sands. Throughout, there’s a sense of matter made animate, of absences felt.
Long cites notions of “the studio as a dub instrument” and the melancholy of “7th chords on a fake Rhodes patch” as central elements in his process, transforming raw materials into rare thresholds of symbiosis and hypnosis. This is music for night skies in hollowed out cities, for views across rivers towards unknown shores: restless, placeless, and profound.

Andreas Vollenweider’s 1985 effort White Winds, subtitled “Seeker’s Journey,” features the composer’s modified electric harp in pieces that are much more experimental than what would later emerge as the prevailing sound of new age. A brief introduction features the lapping of a boat in a slip, but it soon fades into the angular forays of “Hall of the Stairs,” which itself drifts into the more conventional ethno-jazz of “Hall of the Mosaics (Meeting You).” Vollenweider’s harp is joined by full percussion and a bank of synthesizers for “The Glass Hall (Choose the Crystal),” breaking the song down to showcase the unique sound of his instrument. Even when it’s accessing the soothing tones of new age, White Winds seems to lie closer to contemporary jazz instrumentalism, as the repeated phrasing of these songs suggests. Vollenweider even gets lightly funky on the awesomely named “Flight Feet & Root Hands.” With his early-’80s work, the Swiss performer was establishing himself as a leader of the burgeoning new age genre. White Winds is a good example of his sound, which mixed accessibility with uniqueness and some true musical exploration.

The legendary, Grammy Award-winning harpist takes some truly blessed left turns on what could have been just another pedestrian new age Christmas collection. Rather than do the umpteenth version of “White Christmas,” Andreas Vollenweider applies his plucky, ethereal style to unique, traditional, and little heard Old World tunes like “The Coventry Carol” (which he jazzes up with bamboo flute and seductive sax), “The Wexford Carol,” “The Yorkshire Wassail” (which is the source of “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”) and “Carol of the Drum.” His beautiful harp tones are perfect fits for these classical instruments, but he has enough pop sensibilities to add just the right touch of soul and groove to them. Vollenweider’s other ace here is longtime friend Carly Simon, who lends her warm and familiar voice to an offbeat arrangement of the title track and several romantic, inspirational originals. Nothing is wrong with overtly commercial new age-oriented holiday collections like the beautiful albums Jim Brickman has done, but Vollenweider deserves kudos for digging deeper into history and finding emotional joy in traditional pieces that truly sound fresh here.
