Like Bruckner, Eugen Jochum was a devout Catholic, and in his recordings of this master’s music there is a tenderness, spirituality, and quality of love that is unique in the discography. Though he refused to rank Bruckner the symphonist as highly as Brahms, Jochum clearly saw a world of meaning in these works, and his two integral recordings of the nine symphonies deserve a place in any serious collection. – Ted Libbey

The Karajan Official Remastered Edition comprises 13 box sets containing official remasterings of the finest recordings the Austrian conductor made for EMI between 1946 and 1984, and which are now a jewel of the Warner Classics catalogue.

For many, Herbert von Karajan (1908-1989) – hailed early in his career as ‘Das Wunder Karajan’ (The Karajan Miracle) and known in the early 1960s as ‘the music director of Europe’ – remains the ultimate embodiment of the maestro. The release of the Karajan Official Remastered Edition over the first half of 2014 marks the 25th anniversary of the conductor’s death in July 1989 at the age of 81.

He was closely associated with EMI for the majority of his recording career (specifically from 1946 to 1960 and then again from 1969 to 1984). EMI’s legendary producer Walter Legge sought him out in Vienna just after World War II and the long relationship that ensued embraced recordings with the Vienna Philharmonic, the Philharmonia (the orchestra founded by Legge), the Berlin Philharmonic (of which Karajan became ‘conductor for life’ in 1955), the forces of La Scala, Milan, and the Orchestre de Paris.

The Karajan Official Remastered Edition will feature primarily symphonic and choral music. The entire edition will comprise recordings remastered from the original sources in 24-bit/96kHz at Abbey Road Studios, the world’s most renowned recording studio.

This live recording brings together an extraordinary combination of artistic abundance: Remy Ballot conducting the music of Anton Bruckner, enacted at Bruckner’s place of work, the basilica of St. Florian in Upper Austria. Captured at the annual festival Brucknertage, the musical youth of the Upper Austrian Symphonic Youth Orchestra enjoyed the great honour to give a celebrated performance in a one-of-a-kind setting. The vigour and professionalism joined by the intuition of Ballot provide for some goosebumps and appends another worthy opus to a series which has been critically acclaimed and lavished with prestigious international awards.

In their first recording on Chandos for almost ten years, the Residentie Orchestra The Hague here performs the work under its chief conductor, Neeme Järvi, who has conducted the symphony with orchestras across the globe, and is recognised as one of the key interpreters of it.

This live concert recording features renowned Bruckner expert Stanisław Skrowaczewski, who commands a rare position within the international musical scene, being both a renowned conductor and a highly-regarded composer.

This recording is an interpretation of humility from nonagenarian Stanisław Skrowaczewski, a performance in which the listener can hear the remarkable connection between conductor and the London Philharmonic Orchestra; the Orchestra has performed Bruckner’s symphonies under his baton many times.

Anton Bruckner’s Fifth Symphony is one of the grandest of his so-called ‘cathedrals in sound’. From the first movement’s monumental tone, via the dance-haunted Scherzo, to the beautiful yet finally enigmatic Adagio, Bruckner’s ‘fantastic’ Fifth ends with a triumphant orchestral finale, among the finest ever written.

Skrowaczewski’s interpretation of Bruckner’s Symphony No. 3 with the LPO is also available on the LPO’s record label (LPO-0084). Released in 2015, the recording received excellent reviews, with BBC Radio 3 commenting that ‘it sounds throughout as if the LPO is completely in sympathy with the conductor’s carefully controlled approach … It feels right, end to end.’

This recording was taken from a live concert performance at Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall on Saturday 31 October 2015.

Bernard Haitink is internationally renowned for his interpretations of Bruckner and is widely recognized as the world’s leading Bruckner conductor.

Bruckner’s Symphony No 4 (‘Romantic’) conjures up visions of mediaeval knights, huntsmen and enchanted woodland, particularly through the prominent use of the horn in the work. One of his most popular pieces, it was treated to many revisions by the composer and this recording features the second version of the 1877/8 Nowak edition (published 1953) with the 1880 Finale.

From its opening expectant hush via its central Adagio movement (composed in memory of Bruckner’s mother) to its Austrian folk dance-influenced final movement, Bruckner’s Symphony No. 3 displays both the key influence of Wagner on the composer, and his structural flair, which earned his symphonies the description ‘cathedrals of sound’.

Stanisław Skrowaczewski, currently the world’s oldest major working conductor, is renowned for his affinity with Bruckner and the London Philharmonic Orchestra has performed Bruckner’s symphonies under his baton many times. Skrowaczewski’s decorations include the Knight’s Cross of Polonia Restituta, one of Poland’s highest decorations, six honorary Doctorates, and the Gold Medal from the Mahler-Bruckner Society; each indicating the massive contribution he has made to music-making throughout his career.

This recording was taken from a live concert performance at Royal Festival Hall, London, in March 2014, which was very well received critically.

Skrowaczewski uses his own, unpublished, edition of the Symphony in this recording, offering the listener a unique experience, and an opportunity to get inside the mind of Bruckner’s greatest interpreter.

Skrowaczewski’s interpretation of Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7 with the LPO is also available on the LPO’s record label (LPO-0071). Released in 2013, the recording received rave reviews, with Gramophone commenting that ‘It has a quiet dignity and integrity, and one is left in no doubt that the man on the podium comes with a wealth of experience and is in love with every bar.’

On disc as well as in concert, Thomas Dausgaard and his Swedish Chamber Orchestra have attracted a growing international interest. The team regularly visits some of the world’s leading concert venues, and just recently their performance of Schumann’s Second Symphony at the BBC Proms made a great impact on audience and critics alike. Precisely Schumann’s symphonies have featured in Dausgaard’s and the SCO’s series ‘Opening Doors’ on BIS, in which Romantic symphonies are performed with smaller than usual numbers – to great critical acclaim: ‘The most perceptive Schumann cycle in over three decades’ was the verdict in International Record Review. The sequel to the Schumann recordings was a disc combining Schubert’s Unfinished and Great C major Symphonies, described in BBC Radio 3’s CD Review as ‘a crisp, clean account that somehow seems to strip away layers of silt to get a clear view of the colours underneath.’ Dausgaard and the forty-odd members of the SCO now take on a composer whose symphonies often are regarded as the epitome of Romantic grandeur, not to say bulkiness – Anton Bruckner, and his Second Symphony. The recording thus becomes a sort of test of how the ‘Opening Doors’ concept can be applied to music from the High Romantic period. Thomas Dausgaard himself finds in this work ‘a feeling of a very personal prayer – as if Bruckner was meditating and improvising at the organ’ and goes on to describe the experience of performing it with the SCO as ‘a kind of collective chamber-musical improvisation with a strong symphonic undercurrent. I hope Bruckner would have liked it…’

Symphony No.4 in E-flat major has belonged to Anton Bruckner’s most popular works ever since its first performance, in Vienna 1881, when the composer was reportedly called out to take a bow after each movement. It is often called the ‘Romantic’, a nickname that Bruckner himself used, most probably in reference to the literary genre of the medieval romance, rather than to the concept of romantic love. Indeed, Bruckner is claimed to have provided a sort of programme to the work, setting the scene for its opening as follows: ‘Medieval town – first daylight – on proud chargers knights sally forth … the wonder of nature surrounds them …’ What was performed in Vienna in 1881 was a second, revised version of the symphony, which had actually already seen first light in 1874. In spite of the success of the revised version, further revisions took place before publication, resulting in the so-called ‘1888 version’ recorded here. Although this remained the preferred version for several decades, it later became discredited, as it was assumed that the revisions it contained were the product of others than the composer himself. The rehabilitation of the 1888 version is to a large extent due to the efforts of the musicologist Benjamin Korstvedt, who in 2004 prepared the first modern edition of the 1888 version for the Bruckner Collected Works edition. In his liner notes to the present disc, Korstvedt discusses this background, giving a number of interesting illustrations of the differences between editions.
