The Chamber Orchestra of Europe performs Stravinsky’s Apollon Musagète and Pulcinella Suite, repertoire that demands the fresh and energetic delivery for which the COE is renowned. The COE deliver the ‘wonderful freshness’ Stravinsky himself envisioned in Apollon Musagète with their bright and spirited performance. The Guardian commented: ‘In Stravinsky’s Apollon Musagète each and every player contributed to the distinctive, rich-toned sonority.’

The Pulcinella Suite is a ballet based on some of Pergolesi’s most memorable music. The COE has recorded the more unusual 1949 ‘revised’ version of the 1922 concert suite which is in eight sections and performed without voices. The Independent commented: ‘Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite brimmed over with the energy and insight of first-rate musicians discovering every opportunity such sunny music offered them.’

The COE recorded this album at Église Maronite Notre-Dame Du Liban, Paris, in November 2008. They performed this Stravinsky programme at Cité de la musique, Paris, Konzerthaus, Vienna and Philharmonie, Luxembourg to widespread critical acclaim.

Yannick Nézet-Séguin’s saga on Mozart for Deutsche Grammophon continues: after The Clemency of Titus in 2018, it’s now time for The Magic Flute to pass under the Quebecois’ baton at the Festspielhaus in Baden-Baden. His direction breathes life into all the magic that is required for such a fairy-tale, Mozart’s final opera, and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe successfully communicates the opera’s majesty and depth, as heard in the radiant “Priest’s March”.

This pairing of concertos Nos 25 and 27, recorded with Chamber Orchestra of Europe, is Piotr Anderszewski’s third Warner Classics album of Mozart concertos. “In Mozart I tend to prefer to direct from the keyboard,” he explains, “His concertos are like chamber works…The piano is in dialogue with the orchestra, conversing and interacting all the time. The two works are very different …No 25 is very grand, complex and sophisticated; No 27, Mozart’s final piano concerto, is in a major key, but underneath it I sense an incredible sadness … It always amazes me how deep this music is.”

This release celebrates the partnership of the distinguished conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt (1929-2016) directing the Chamber Orchestra of Europe (COE) in a memorable cycle of the complete Schubert Symphonies at the Styriarte Festival in Graz, Austria during July 1988. Harnoncourt was a notable and perhaps controversial Schubertian who, with his favorite orchestra, set about examining everything afresh. The players he worked with in 1988 talk about the way he changed their perceptions, of discovering Schubert’s work for themselves, ignoring the accretions of previous performance tradition.

“I believe the key idea of this, if I may define it as so, “cycle of prayers” is the effusion of spiritual warmth in the individual, the sharing of pity, love and joy in the heart of men; all sincerely instilled by the composer Domenico Danza. It is an immense pleasure to listen to such rich, intense and prolonged music; a sweet emotion right from the heart of Nature itself. The sound of the choir strikes you for the richness in its styles, the colored nuances, its lively spirits and a sophisticated flowing mix of impressionistic, enchanted and fascinating sounds. As the famous Russian musicologist and composer B. Asafiev used to say: “the composer’s talent is Talent, the mind is the Mind, the techniques of his profession is the Technique and, naturally, these have to be beautiful otherwise everything falls apart.” Danza’s cycle of prayers cannot be considered mere liturgy, it’s rather music in its philosophical essence where thought becomes music and music itself is thought. From the first to the last prayer a deep soul and delicate lyrics persist, the music unfolds on a transparent and lyrical sound, and, even in the presence of a consistant amount of material, viscosity and weight are not perceived. An extensive and widespread work which to me truly attracts for its lyrics and sincerity.” (S.N. Legkov)

The three original members of Chambao La Mari, El Edi, and Dani made waves in the world music scene with their new brand of flamenco, called flamenco chill, which combined the passion and vocal style of traditional Andalusian flamenco with elements of electronica, specifically chillout. Formed in the early morning hours of the 2001 summer solstice in Malaga, Spain, Chambao first appeared to the greater public on the 2002 Sony compilation Flamenco Chill, to which they contributed eight songs, featuring Mari on vocals and the others on the instrumentation. Two years later their first solo full-length, Endorfinas en la Mente, produced by Italian electronica expert Bob Benozzo, was released, followed the next year by Pokito a Poko, a record on which Dani contributed very little, as he left the group before it was finished. After touring for Pokito a Poko, Edi also decided to depart from the band, leaving Mari alone as the last remaining member. After successfully battling breast cancer, the singer returned to the stage and studio with Chambao, this time with a new seven-piece backing band. In 2007 the band released their fourth studio album Con Otro Aire. Frontwoman La Mari took the helm of composing, arranging and production duties and her African and Mexican influences are clearly audible throughout the record. Chambao returned five years later with their self titled fifth release. They enlisted Carlos Raya (Fito & Fitipaldis, M-Clan) on production duties whose sleek skills compliment the band’s ambient mixture of flamenco and electronic music.

CK is the seventh studio album by American R&B/funk singer Chaka Khan, released on the Warner Bros. Records label in 1988.

CK was Khan’s first album not to be recorded with Arif Mardin, instead it had with the exception of two tracks Russ Titelman at the helm as producer, with whom she had collaborated on hits like “Ain’t Nobody” (1983), “Eye to Eye” from 1984’s platinum-selling I Feel for You as well as “Tight Fit” from her previous album Destiny. Musically CK combined a variety of genres such as soul, R&B, funk, pop as well as two jazz titles and altogether the set was more laid-back, less hip-hop influenced and production-wise not as complex and synth-driven as I Feel for You and Destiny.

Three singles were released from C.K.: Womack & Womack’s Latino-flavoured “It’s My Party” which reached #5 on Billboard’s R&B Singles chart, “Soul Talkin'” and “Baby Me” which became another Top 10 hit on the R&B chart, peaking at #8. The CK album itself also charted higher than the preceding Destiny, reaching #17 on the R&B Albums chart.

CK opens with Khan’s cover of Stevie Wonder’s 1970 hit “Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours”, again featuring the composer himself on harmonica, just like on “I Feel for You”.

One of the two tracks not to be produced by Russ Titelman was the funky and improvisational “Sticky Wicked”, Khan’s first proper collaboration with Prince after having covered his “I Feel for You” in 1984 and turning it into a million-selling hit single. CK also includes a second Prince composition, “Eternity” (produced by David Frank and Khan herself), and some ten years later Khan and Prince were to team up for a full-length album together, Come 2 My House.

“CK” features one track written and co-produced by Chris Jasper, former member of the Isley Brothers, who was also responsible for writing and producing much of the Isley material from 1973 through 1984 before the Isley Brothers breakup. Jasper can also be heard singing background with Chaka on “Make It Last”.

CK features two recordings of jazz classics that since have become mainstays in Khan’s live repertoire, “The End of a Love Affair”, a tribute to Billie Holiday who first recorded the song on her 1958 album Lady in Satin, and Alec Wilder’s “I’ll Be Around”, the latter with a guest appearance by another legend in the jazz genre, Miles Davis, who in fact also features on the Prince track “Sticky Wicked”.

Chain Reaktor is a modern progressive rock band. Their music is groovy, adventurous, sometimes heavy or dark, but always melodic.

The band was formed by the young talented brothers Bart (vocals, guitars and flute) and Arjan Laan (drums and percussion) who also have their own band, Skylake. Together with their father Erik Laan (vocals, keys), known from neo-prog band Silhouette, they wrote the music and lyrics. In search of a groovy bassist, they asked their friend Mark op ten Berg who has a background in soul and funk.

2020 was a terrible year for gardening. It was terrible for peppers, it was terrible for tomatoes, it was terrible for the condition of the soul. But Chad VanGaalen somehow raised a garden all the same: carrots and sprouts and broccoli and a revivifying new album, all of them grown at home. He likes to eat directly off the plant, he says—”I get down on my knees and graze. It’s nice to feel the vegetables in your face”—and the 13 songs on World’s Most Stressed Out Gardener were harvested with just such a spirit: in their raw state, young and vegetal, at the very moment, they were made.

Hugo Manuel is better known by his musical alias Chad Valley. A product of Oxford’s prolific creative community, Chad Valley has amassed a catalogue that spans four studio releases, numerous collaborations and dozens of remixes. His 2010 debut – a self-titled exploration in swirling synths and sunburnt melodies – laid the groundwork for 2011’s Equatorial Ultravox, which gave his downtempo productions a decidedly more pop-leaning twist. It was with Equatorial Ultravox, and his 2013 album Young Hunger, that Chad Valley’s profile sprung forward, strengthened by a string of key touring slots supporting the likes of Erasure, CHVRCHES, Active Child and Passion Pit, and by his collaborations with El Perro Del Mar, Glasser, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs and Twin Shadow. After releasing 2015’s sparkling Entirely New Blue and continued touring extensively, as he now prepares to release his third full-length album in 2018. Imaginary Music includes the previously released singles “Up Again” and “LA in August,” both of which bolster one of the strongest batches of material Chad Valley has yet delivered.
