Dottie West was one of the most successful, and controversial, performers to rise to popularity during the Nashville sound era; like her friend and mentor Patsy Cline, West’s battles for identity and respect within the male-dominated country music hierarchy were instrumental in enabling other female artists to gain control over the directions of their careers. I love this album, which showcases Dottie’s voice superbly. Dottie never tried to do anything radical with any of the songs that she covered, but she recorded them all in her own heartfelt country.

Dottie West Sings is the name of a country music album by country singer, Dottie West, released in 1965.
This is Dottie West’s second studio album released by RCA Victor. The previous year, West successfully entered the country market with the Top 10 Grammy Award-winning hit, “Here Comes My Baby”. The singles from her second album didn’t hit the Top 10 or 20 but did enter the Country Top 40 chart. These two singles were, “Gettin’ Married Has Made Us Strangers” and “No Sign of Living”. The latter song was written by Jessi Colter, the future wife of Waylon Jennings who became a country singer herself in the mid-1970s. This album did well on the “Top Country Albums” chart, reaching No. 12.

‘Can You Hear Nature Sing?’ originated from a poem written by Dot after her friend and poet Stuart McKenzie recommended some of his favourite poets. “On reading some of the work I wanted to use my immediate natural environment to write a poem” Dot explains. The result was ‘Emblems’ set in an autumn landscape. Later, when Dot and Zoe Bestel decided to write a duet for the new album Dot suggested ‘Emblems’ as “a starting point for the lyrics” As it transpired it proved fundamental in shaping ‘Can You Hear Nature Sing?’, providing much of the lyrical content.

Another Bay Area girl with a big voice. I don’t think anyone who was around in the 70’s will ever forget the first time they heard the full 50 member Northern California Youth Choir erupt from behind the lead vocal on Edwin Hawkins’ Oh Happy Day. I thought that our car radio speakers were about to blow through the dashboard! That sublime, controlled lead vocal in the midst of the un-bridaled joy on that groundbreaking song was one Dorothy Combs Morrison. I’ll pull out that original album soon but as soon as the song went national, Buddah launched Dorothy’s solo career with this album. The music is a lovely Gospel/Soul mix that rings with the optimism of the era.

Königsberg in East Prussia (now Kaliningrad, Russia) was a rare haven of peace during the Thirty Years’ War thanks to its geographical location. Many people, including artists and musicians, fled there from the horrors of plague and war. Heinrich Albert, a pupil of Heinrich Schütz (his cousin) and Johann Hermann Schein, the Thomaskantor in Leipzig, was appointed cathedral organist in the city in 1630. His garden hut, overgrown with pumpkin vines and suitably dubbed the ‘pumpkin hut’ (Kürbishütte), became the meeting place of the Königsberg Circle of Poets: a refuge and a space for cutting-edge creativity, spared from direct involvement in the war.

The Boreas Quartett Bremen and soprano Dorothee Mields bring a little-known musical manuscript of the renaissance to life and present a series of premiere recordings. The Basevi Codex, a collection of Franco-Flemish chansons, motets and mass settings, was produced during the early sixteenth century in the famous music scribing workshop of Pierre Alamire. Faithfully following renaissance performance practice, which allowed great freedom in its musical realisations, the recorder consort and Dorothee Mields interpret selected pieces from the codex, with voice or purely instrumental, and, depending on the character of the piece, also with improvised virtuoso ornamentation. This creates a colourful picture of the music as it was sung and played at the Burgundian-Dutch court of Princess Margaret of Austria in Mechelen.

On her new Album, the outstanding Baroque soprano presented together with the Swiss early music Ensemble “The Friday Academy,” works for soprano and chamber music by Georg Friedrich Handel. “Handel’s Tea time “combines the two cantatas” Venus & Adonis “and” Mi palpita il cor “with instrumental works as well as excerpts from the” 24 English Songs “and the”9 German Arias”. The cantatas are magnificent examples of Handel’s art of expression, celebrating the human singing voice. The cantata” Venus & Adonis ” HWV 85 is probably Handel’s first composition in English. The cantata “Mi palpita il cor” HWV 132b, on the other hand, was written in Italy, but Handel revised it in his time in London. Handel also found time in Vocal Music for more intimate genres and forms of expression beyond the grandiose Arias and choruses. Thus over the years the “24 English Songs” and “9 German Arias”were created. The programme is rounded off by a” Concerto a quattro ” and a Trio Sonata for Oboe and strings. In addition, the “Air and Five Variations” for harpsichord give an idea of what an incredible keyboard virtuoso Handel must have been. As a tribute to Henry Purcell, who had made London an opera metropolis before Handel, an aria from his Semi-opera “The Fairy Queen”is heard at the end of the album.
