Eminent representative of the French piano school, the pianist Eric Le Sage offers a new album in the form of a poetic walk in the secret gardens of 22 French composers of the late 19th and early 20th century.

Between the Belle Époque and the Roaring Twenties, around two world wars that had to be healed, in the vertigo of all the rebirths and that of progress on the march, music also needed calm, humanity and natural intimacy. While twenty-two French composers cultivate their secret soul, in a few piano miniatures, electricity, the gramophone, the little queen, the Parisian metro … are already inviting themselves into people’s daily lives.

Following the freshness and vigour of their quincentenary portrait celebration of Robert Fayrfax, Ensemble Pro Victoria’s second Delphian album brings a similar boldness of approach to a wider-ranging collection, charting some rarely explored territory from a time of great religious, societal and musical change. Broken fragments of huge pre-Reformation works, preserved only in lute tablature; the first reconstruction and recording of some of the earliest Anglican psalm settings ever written; French chansons and motets once popular in England; improvisatory organ verses within Lady Mass movements by Ludford; and an English-texted version of a much-loved Tallis anthem that shows it in a quite different light: these forgotten “afterlives” of earlier Tudor music help build a much more complete picture of music in sixteenth-century England.

Dvsn has officially announced their much-anticipated fourth album, Working On My Karma. The follow-up to 2020’s A Muse in Her Feelings will arrive on Oct. 28 via OVO Sound / Warner Records. The R&B duo (vocalist Daniel Daley and producer Nineteen85) confirmed the title and its release date on Thursday morning. While the details on their upcoming album are still scarce, they did share an image of the cover art. It depicts a raging Daley, shot in a metallic and wearing a durag, with the hands of three women on his face. In an August profile with Rated R&B, super producer Jermaine Dupri described dvsn’s new album as “an honest space for a man.” He continued, “It’s a record that [speaks] to the challenges of a man — and Daniel being that one in particular.”

The third and most seasoned Drugdealer album, Hiding In Plain Sight, almost didn’t happen at all. Frustrated and insecure with his own singing voice prior to the pandemic, Drugdealer founder and primary songwriter Michael Collins was nearly ready to throw in the towel. While attending Mexican Summer’s annual Marfa Myths festival, a chance encounter with artist and composer Annette Peacock changed his outlook. Collins says, “I told her my plight, then I played her a song, and she told me I wasn’t singing high enough for my speaking voice. When I returned to LA, I started coming up with new progressions, which I’d modulate up three half steps. It forced me to find a new way to sing.”

Taking inspiration from a canon of gruff but soulful rock vocalists like Phil Lynott, Nick Lowe, or even Van Morrison, Collins looks back on his nocturnal meanderings through LA’s warrens of bars and clubs. He’s right up front in the mix, detailing a search for love in all the wrong places. AM Gold, down-hard love songs, cosmic country and Rhodes-driven grooves result in the most joyful and fully-realized Drugdealer album to date. Hiding In Plain Sight is the sound of Michael Collins and Drugdealer getting their groove back with guests including Tim Presley, Kate Bollinger, Bambina, Sasha Winn, Sean Nicholas Savage, Video Age, and John Carroll Kirby.

Though he didn’t record Chopin intensely throughout his Warner career, Claudio Arrau had close affinities with the Polish composer. He performed an étude in the program of the very first recital he gave at the age of only five, and he was the first composer he put on record in 1921. Here is a beautiful remastered version of the complete Etudes, Op. 25, with the rare Allegro de concert.

Claudio Arrau was the youngest of three children of the married couple Don Carlos and Lucretia Leon de Arrau. His mother, who was 43 years old when he was born, gave piano lessons. His father, who worked as an ophthalmologist in Chillán, died in a riding accident when his son Claudio was one year old.
