Crowded House is a long-standing and much-loved vehicle for the songwriting talents of Neil Finn. Formed in Melbourne Australia in 1985 out the ashes of New Zealand’s Split Enz by Neil, Paul Hester and Nick Seymour, their eponymous self-titled debut album on Capitol Records went on to global success with the hits ‘Don’t Dream It’s Over’ and ‘Something So Strong’. The band’s first incarnation lasted from 1985 through 1995 with four studio albums and worldwide success, becoming particularly beloved for their freewheeling and interactive live shows. In 2005 following the tragic death of Paul Hester, Neil and Nick felt emotionally compelled to bring Crowded House back, to put some more good history, as they described it, into the story of the band. Drafting in new drummer Matt Sherrod and with long-time touring member Mark Hart they released the album ‘Time On Earth’ to critical acclaim and toured the world. Another album, ‘Intriguer’, was recorded in 2009 and the band was inducted into the Aria Hall of Fame in 2016. With in excess of 12 million albums sold across six studio albums, two acclaimed ‘Best of’ collections, over 1.2 billion streams to date and following Neil Finn’s surprise star turn and an extremely successful world tour with Fleetwood Mac, Neil and Nick Seymour are inspired to begin a new chapter in the Crowded House story. Recorded in Valentine and United Studios in LA and then remotely across the first half of 2020, Crowded House’s seventh studio album is titled ‘Dreamers Are Waiting’.

Ranked #71 in Rolling Stone’s ‘100 Greatest Albums Of The 80s’ survey

‘Crowded House’ is the debut self-titled album by Crowded House, released in June 1986. There were 5 singles from the album and one of them, Don’t Dream It’s Over is the band’s signature song and was their first international hit, reaching #1 in Canada and #2 in the US.

When this sparkling debut by the three-piece Crowded House made its appearance in 1987, those starved for hooks minus the usual sentimentality were finally sated. New Zealander Neil Finn came all the way to Los Angeles from Australia, bringing with him some of the finest melodies and knowing lyrics to come down the pop-music pike in years. With immaculate production and keyboard additions by Mitchell Froom, (who found his fame with this band), „Crowded House“ proved to be a stellar debut.

Neil Finn first made his mark as a member of his big brother Tim’s band, Split Enz. His contribution to that band gave Split Enz its first international hits (the most notable of which was ‘I Got You’). Finn continued this tradition of writing and performing harmony-rich gems when he formed Crowded House with Split Enz drummer Paul Hester and Melbourne bassist Nick Seymour. Featuring the beautiful yet ambiguous ‘Don’t Dream Its Over’ (covered by Paul Young at the Nelson Mandela Tribute Concert), ‘World Where You Live,’ and ‘Something So Strong,’ „Crowded House“ is the ideal introduction to the delights of Neil Finn and his exceptional band.

Crowbar’s roots can be traced back almost as far back as Roly Greenway’s career. Greenway first played guitar in The Centurys (1958) who were based in Guelph and featured Ed Dameron (bass), Rick Cassolato (drums), Glenn Higgins (sax) and another unidentified drummer. Greenway would then go on to perform in Joe Pino & The Starlites (1962), and The Ascots (1963). It was in the Ascots that he met guitarist Rheal Lanthier and the two played the Vegas lounge circuit for two years with the likes of Liberace and Zsa Zsa Gabor. The band broke up from sheer boredom and returned to Canada where Greenway joined Bobby Curtola’s touring band.

CrossBorder Blues…, or when three exceptional creative talents throw themselves into a series of jubilant explorations built on acoustic blues echoes and the unusual blend of sounds sparked by their meeting. Harrison Kennedy’s voice, banjo, spoons and guitar, Jean-Jacques Milteau’s imaginative harmonica and Vincent Segal’s lyrical cello converse and play as the members of this inspired trio pay homage to their roots without sacrificing to nostalgia, inventing no less than the future of the blue note in the process.

The forty (40) previously unreleased tracks recorded forty (40) years ago will be packaged in several formats and configurations and released July 7 in international territories, and July 8 in the United States. The box set includes all 40 tracks, a 188-page booklet of never before seen tour photos, and a bonus DVD of previously unreleased concert footage; the box is available as a 3CD/DVD set or Pure Audio Blu-Ray (192kHz/24-bit)/DVD set.
Long-rumored and highly anticipated, CSNY 1974 captures the band’s one-of-a-kind harmonic alchemy during its remarkable outdoor stadium tour, a trek that spanned more than two months, and included 31 concerts, in 24 cities, with combined audiences of over a million people. Produced by Graham Nash and Joel Bernstein, the box set mirrors the electric/acoustic/electric format that the band followed each night on stage, representing an idealized version of a show from the tour.
“This project has been the most difficult, yet rewarding work I’ve ever done in my 50 years of recording,” says Graham Nash. “It rekindled the love I have for my partners and the music we have made together.”
The box set includes some of CSNY’s best-known music; songs like “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes,” “Helpless,” “Wooden Ships,” and “Teach Your Children.” During the 1974 tour, CSNY also introduced new songs that emerged later on various albums, like Crosby’s “Time After Time,” and Nash’s “Fieldworker. Several songs by Young are previously unreleased, including “Traces,” “Love/Art Blues,” “Goodbye Dick,” and “Hawaiian Sunrise.”
CSNY 1974 will be available from CSNY and Rhino in several different configurations listed below, on July 7/8, nearly 40 years to the date after the tour’s first show on July 9, 1974.

• Crosby, Stills & Nash join forces for their first live performance video in over 20 years! Filmed during their 2012 tour, CSN 2012 includes many of the trio’s classic hits as well as new songs, “Radio,” “Almost Gone”, and “Girl From The North Country” (a cover of Bob Dylan’s 1963 release). The disc also includes interviews with David, Stephen, and Graham, plus their band and crew. A must-have for any CSN fan.

CSN 2012 is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of Alternative Distribution Alliance (evidently a consortium of artists releasing their own material) with an AVC encoded 1080i transfer in 1.78:1. Though there are occasional slight combing artifacts on display throughout this high definition presentation, overall this is one of the nicer looking live concert Blu-rays of the past several months. Though the stage is frequently bathed in shades of blue and red, posterizing is at a minimum and banding is virtually nonexistent. Black levels are good and contrast is generally excellent. Some of the midrange shots are a bit on the fuzzy side, but close-ups really pop very nicely, with abundant fine object detail.

CSN 2012 features a lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 stereo mix, and only a lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 stereo mix. This is the only live concert Blu-ray I personally can think of that doesn’t include at the very least a Dolby Digital 5.1 surround mix, if not an actual lossless surround mix. As was mentioned above in the main body of the review, was this done intentionally to “bury’ some of the wandering vocals? It’s especially odd in that this was evidently done in conjunction with HDNet, which at least occasionally offers surround mixes of its concert fare. Whatever the reason, the good news is that this mix, while obviously narrow and rather dense sounding, offers excellent fidelity and clarity, ironically so much so that the intonation problems in some of the vocals are only too readily apparent. The band sounds great here, with some really appealing low- and midrange frequencies. (more…)

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s Déjà Vu was the most-anticipated new album in America in 1970. More than 50 years later, it’s one of the most famous albums in rock history with legendary songs, including “Carry On” and “Teach Your Children,” that still resonate today.

Rhino will honor the intense creative journey that led to this milestone album with an expansive 4-CD/1-LP collection that includes a pristine version of the original album on both 180-gram vinyl and CD, plus hours of rare and unreleased studio recordings that provide incredible insight into the making of the record.

DÉJÀ VU: 50TH ANNIVERSARY DELUXE EDITION will be available from Rhino on 14th May. Presented in a 12 x 12 hardcover book, the collection comes illustrated with rarely seen photos from the era and annotated by writer/filmmaker Cameron Crowe, whose revealing liner notes recount the making of the album through stories told by the people who were there, including David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, and Neil Young.

The album’s original 10 tracks are joined by 38 more to add nearly two-and-a-half hours of music that includes demos, outtakes, and alternate takes – most of which are previously unreleased. Among them is “Know You Got To Run,” the first song the quartet recorded during its first session on 15th July at the house Stills was renting from Peter Tork in Studio City. Other unreleased highlights include the demo for Crosby’s “Almost Cut My Hair”; Stills’ outtake for “Bluebird Revisited”; and Young’s alternate version of “Helpless” featuring harmonica. Also making its debut on the set is a delightful version of “Our House” that features Nash singing with the song’s inspiration, Joni Mitchell.

Déjà Vu is the second album by Crosby, Stills & Nash, and their first in the quartet configuration of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Less than a year after the release of CSN’s groundbreaking debut, the group returned with Stephen Stills’s former Buffalo Springfield cohort/rival Neil Young augmenting the threesome. The result is a less concentrated but more kinetic creation; Young swims through the celestial harmonies of rock’s best barbershop trio like a fly in consommé. While somewhat dated (“Almost Cut My Hair”? Wait a while, David, it’ll fall out), Deju Vu is teeming with early ’70s FM staples, including “Helpless”, “Teach Your Children”, and “Our House”. One of Rock’s all-time classics!
