Dean Hurley is an American composer, sound designer, and music supervisor known for his collaborations with visionary director and musician David Lynch. He is responsible for building eerie, evocative soundscapes using electronics, tape loops, and field recordings. His sound design work was an integral part of the third season of Twin Peaks, and a digital collection of the material, Anthology Resource, Vol. 1, was released in 2017. Prior to his collaboration with Lynch, he worked at Hollywood-based audio post-production facility, Soundelux, before moving to Lynch’s Asymmetrical Studios in 2005. He was initially brought in to engineer recording sessions, but over time found himself experimenting with many different aspects of production. His first major collaboration with Lynch was for the 2006 movie Inland Empire; he also worked with the director on his commercial projects and produced and co-wrote four of his musical works including 2011’s Crazy Clown Time and 2013’s The Big Dream. He went on to work with artists such as Lykke Li, Chrysta Bell, Dirty Beaches, and Zola Jesus. His gained further renown years later when Lynch returned to the hugely successful Twin Peaks television series and delivered its third season, Twin Peaks: The Return, in 2017. Hurley’s involvement with the show was pivotal – he provided a number of original ambient soundscapes for various sequences. He also released an album of the material – titled Anthology Resource, Vol. 1 – via Sacred Bones in August 2017. Hurley played drums for the song “Snake Eyes” by the fictional band Trouble during a live performance scene in the fifth episode of the series. Anthology Resource, Vol. 2: Philosophy of Beyond, containing material created for the 2018 film Perfect as well as an artist residency for the Art Gallery of New South Wales, was released in 2019. – Rob Wacey

In 1913, Karl Straube published his edition of ten Preludes and Fugues by Johann Sebastian Bach, who had been his illustrious predecessor as cantor as St Thomas’s Church in Leipzig. The late Romantic edition’s detailed performance instructions — including fingering, dynamics, phrasing, articulation, and registration — make it a seminal milestone in the performance history of Bach’s organ works. Dean Billmeyer breathes new life into this significant edition, performing the pieces at historic organs built by Wilhelm Sauer. The two instruments heard on this album were completed shortly after the turn of the century: they have retained their original condition and boast an impressively beautiful sound. With great technical skill and sensibility, Dean Billmeyer masterfully transports his audience into the early years of the twentieth century and gives insight into the period’s understanding of Bach’s music. The organist gives listeners an impression of what Bach sounded like when the Romantic era was still the present and had only just begun to become history. Billmeyer is appointed professor at the University of Minnesota. At this university he is the successor of Heinrich Fleischer, a disciple of Karl Staube.

Deafheaven was formed in 2010 by vocalist George Clarke and guitarist Kerry McCoy. They released their debut studio album Roads To Judah in 2011 . They added drummer Daniel Tracy to the group and released their breakthrough album Sunbather in 2013. After rounding out their line up with guitarist Shiv Mehra and bassist Stephen Clark—each subsequent live set felt like a religious experience for the bigger (and bigger) shows that followed. Their third album, and first for ANTI-, 2015’s New Bermuda, was heavier, sturdier, and more grounded in the dirt than Sunbather. They toured extensively to support New Bermuda playing tours and festivals with Lamb Of God, Anthrax, Danzig, and Gojira. Deafheaven’s new album, Ordinary Corrupt Human Love, finds them working with old friends again. The Jack Shirley-produced and Nick Steinhardt-art directed (of Touché Amoré) collection gets its title from Graham Greene’s novel The End of the Affair, referencing a moment when someone is looking for love, in all of its imper¬- fection and simple beauty. This sentiment is carried throughout the hazy, yearning romanticism of the record with song titles and words as sumptuous as the sounds around them. Clarke describes the composition of Ordinary Corrupt Human Love beginning with “small seeds of healing, repair, and rebirth,” and like each subsequent Deafheaven album, this record is, in fact, a revelation. Defeat has inspired some of our best art. If you survive something terrible, you surface on the other side, walk toward the light, and come back to life. If you’re an artist, this kind of new self-knowledge can lead to creating something universal and remembered, something that can live longer than you do. While Deafheaven have managed to cross over this road in the past, they’ve nailed the feeling wholly with Ordinary Corrupt Human Love, a feeling that comes with experience and wisdom. Yes, everybody deals with hurt, everybody’s been the cause of their own implosions, and everybody has the capacity to overcome and love again. Deafheaven have found a way to externalize all of this, and in making their most complete record to date, they turn it into a balm and a cathartic exorcism.

The band was founded in november 1996 after multi-discipline artist Rudy Trouvé met with singer Daan Stuyven at a party, recording their first demo “Chemical” a week after, and playing live a month later, joined by Elko Blijweert on guitar and Herman Houbrechts on drums. The typical band sound consisted of Rudy’s experimental guitars, combined with Elko’s virtuoso guitar and Daan’s deep voice and more melodic guitar. The break took 16 years. But these years were very fertile for all the band members, resulting in many collaborations and side projects, theatre and soundtrack writing, record productions, and a succesfull solo career for Daan.

On 2015’s Aesthesis Australia’s Dead Letter Circus showed signs of mellowing into their stride, subtly putting aside the robust and pain-stricken crescendos that first caught our attention with the expansive This Is The Warning. Aesthesis pointed them in the direction of radio-friendly territory where there’s little place for pronounced heaviness.
With their eponymous album, thank goodness, they haven’t done away with the riffs altogether and those twinkling guitar tones, not to mention Kim Benzie’s consistently dreamy vocals, the standout drumming of Luke Williams and production by Forrester Savell (Karnivool, Skyharbor), have afforded Dead Letter Circus a recognisable sound.
There’s no instant hit here but the quality ingredients that give every track a sheen like the hard-hitting euphoria of Say It Won’t Be Long or the striving Tool-isms of We Own The Light are pushing the guys ever closer to the status they deserve.
