Bass-baritone Adam Plachetka presents Molieri, a programme of opera arias by Mozart and Salieri, together with the Czech Ensemble Baroque under the baton of Roman Válek. Thanks to fictional works such as the film Amadeus, Antonio Salieri is often scapegoated as the man who allegedly caused Mozart’s untimely death out of professional envy. Despite the fact that this is obviously not true, Salieri’s popularity has suffered from this popular myth-making, and most of his operas have sunk into oblivion. Molieri brings the two composers together, focusing on bass-8 baritone arias from their opera buffas. Famous arias from Mozart’s Da Ponte operas are heard in a completely different light when paired to excerpts from Salieri’s Falstaff, Axur, La grotto di Trofonio and La scuola de’ gelosi. It also makes clear why Salieri enjoyed such success, as well as why great composers such as Beethoven, Schubert and Liszt all wanted to study with him. Given the importance of Prague for Mozart’s operatic successes, the music fits the players of Czech Ensemble Baroque like a glove, and Plachetka possesses the optimal combination of vocal authority and agility to sing these buffo roles.

Bass-baritone Adam Plachetka frequents the world’s most prestigious opera houses, and is a MET regular, equally at home in dramatic and comic repertoire. The Czech Ensemble Baroque is one of the most important period instrument ensembles of the Czech Republic, and was founded by Roman Válek in 1998. Plachetka, Válek and the ensemble all make their Pentatone debut.

Following their eponymous debut in 2007, Exploding Head is A Place To Bury Strangers’ most notable record, garnering the New York noise rock outfit critical praise and a cult fanbase. Led by Oliver Ackermann, the band had a simple goal for ‘their first proper studio album’; “to create the craziest, most fucked-up recording ever.” Recorded at their Death By Audio studios in New York and released on Mute Records, the album was critically praised for its explorative sound, taking inspiration from shoegaze icons such as Jesus & Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine. Pitchfork described the album as “frustrated aggression, lacerating feedback… saturated with slender indie-pop melody.” The album has now been digitally remastered by Oliver Ackermann and is presented in three formats.

The Russian composer Nikolai Kapustin (1937-2020), who died at the beginning of the pandemic-related cultural hiatus which has been unique with regard to world history, was able to experience considerable appreciation in his last two decades, which recently gained more and more momentum. Coming from the best Soviet aristocracy of piano teaching – Kapustin was a pupil of a pupil of Horowitz’s teacher Blumenfeld and then studied with the great Alexander Goldenweiser until 1961 – he was denied great recognition in the Soviet Union. As with many great piano composers since Chopin, the cycle of concert etudes from the middle of his life is particularly suitable for an introduction to this world of works. Kapustin’s typical reference to jazz, which probably kept him from greater success in the Soviet years, is based on the highly individual, deliberate adaptation of stylistic elements. He got to know jazz greats such as Ellington, Basie, Cole, Garner, Peterson and others through records and the radio and picked out what suited him. The extremely sensitive, not monotonously hammering as is so often the case, approach of the Chinese pianist A Bu, who is also trained in jazz, is pleasing with regard to interpretation, and he demonstrates his affinity for Kapustin’s music through two samples of his own work.

For the second volume in his Birmingham Schubert symphony cycle, Edward Gardner turns to the Second and Sixth Symphonies. Composed between December 1814 and March 1815, the Second Symphony is not only a response by Schubert to the works of Beethoven, and especially the Prometheus Overture, but also strives to push the conventional symphonic boundaries, most notably in the extended exposition of the first movement. Completed in February 1818, the Sixth Symphony was the first to be titled “Große Sinfonie” (grand symphony) by Schubert, a mark of his growing confidence in his work in the symphonic idiom. The two Overtures were composed at the same time as the Sixth Symphony, and are clearly modelled on the overtures of Rossini, whose music was all the rage in Vienna at that time.

Mirga Grazinyte-Tyla and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra continue The British Project with the release of works from William Walton’s opera Troilus and Cressida. The recording comprises the four-movement Symphonic Suite reworked and arranged from the original operatic score by Christopher Palmer. The CBSO and its charismatic conductor convey all the charm, swagger, and sumptuous sonorities of this music in a performance captured live at Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie.

Troilus and Cressida contains some of William Walton’s most seductive music, as can be heard in the new e-album from Mirga Grazinyte-Tyla and the CBSO – their second for The British Project on Deutsche Grammophon. Mirga Grazinyte-Tyla has enjoyed exploring British music since her appointment as the CBSO’s Music Director five years ago. Her recent Birmingham seasons have featured scores by composers who worked with the CBSO in the decades following its foundation in 1920, from Benjamin Britten and Michael Tippett to Ruth Gipps and Thea Musgrave. She and her orchestra launched The British Project last October with an interpretation of Britten’s Sinfonia da Requiem.

William Walton, born in 1902, forged a strong relationship with the CBSO. He conducted the orchestra in the world premiere recording of his Sinfonia concertante two months after the end of the Second World War and his music remains central to its repertoire. In 1947 he began work on his first grand opera, Troilus and Cressida, a tragic love story based on Geoffrey Chaucer’s eponymous poem and set during the tenth year of the Trojan War.

Tragic love story: Following her acclaimed album of Benjamin Britten’s “Sinfonia da Requiem”, Lithuanian star conductor Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla’s latest release is dedicated to a composition by William Walton that has hardly caught the eye in this country so far: the opera “Troilus and Cressida”. The stage work is full of energy, drama and surprising twists. Premiered in 1954 at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, the opera soon fell into oblivion and is no longer present on the schedules of the big houses. The publisher of William Walton must have guessed what was in the work, because after the composer died in 1983, his publisher encouraged the music writer and arranger Christopher Francis Palmer to an orchestral suite with the musical highlights of the opera.

The Binelli-Ferman Duo and oboist Leanne Nicholls join City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong conducted by Germán Augusto Gutiérrez in this exhilarating compilation of tango arrangements by Daniel Binelli. Each work on this album holds a chapter in the evolution of the tango, from its waterfront roots in the night-time taverns of the Río de la Plata (Buenos Aires and Montevideo) to the concert halls of today. Moreover, the bandoneón, the instrument that symbolizes the tango and permeates its history, takes the spotlight. The journey begins with Ángel Villoldo’s El Choclo, the best-known tango from the early 1900s and the era known as ‘La Guardia Vieja’ (The Old Guard). Here we experience a type of habanera blended with European music. Palomita Blanca, a waltz with lyrics by Francisco Garcia Gimenez, represents the romantic phase of the 1920s and 1930s when the great poets started writing words for the tango. During this time tango became immensely fashionable in European society. We then move to the 1940s when the grandiose dance halls became a hub for the big-time tango orchestras of Aníbal Troilo, Osvaldo Pugliese, Carlos di Sarli and Juan D’Arienzo. Around this period the sound of the bandoneón became inextricably linked to tango. In the 1950s Mariano Mores introduced new instruments to the tango including organ, keyboard, drums and bass. Horacio Salgán, a classically-trained pianist, became a transitional figure between the classic tango of the 1940s and the avant-garde style. Liberated from the need to please dancers, he achieved a brilliant balance between tradition and innovation, and further established the importance of the piano in tango music. In the 1960s the great Astor Piazzolla emerged as a revolutionary force in the tango world. He blended elements of classical and jazz in his music and shocked the traditionalists with his revolutionary ‘tango nuevo’ for the concert hall. From the 1990s we have Daniel Binelli who is the torchbearer of Piazzolla. His works represent the sound of tango today. Our tango journey ends fittingly with a step backwards to 1917 in Matos Rodríguez’s La Cumparsita, a tango traditionally played as the last dance of the evening.
