Chris Botti – Night Sessions (2001) MCH SACD ISO + Hi-Res FLAC

Chris Botti – Night Sessions (2001)
PS3 Rip | SACD ISO | DSD64 2.0 & DST64 5.1 > 1-bit/2.8224 MHz | 55:50 minutes | Scans included | 4,92 GB

At the precise moment when a corporate reshuffling and a reduced roster led to death knells in the press for Columbia Records’ jazz division, Chris Botti was signing on after three albums at rival Verve, the jazz arm of Universal. Along with Bela Fleck, poached from Warner Bros., Botti seemed to represent the new lean-and-mean Columbia Jazz, an eclectic, contemporary artist with considerable crossover potential to go with his jazz legitimacy. While the dominant sound on Botti’s Columbia debut is naturally his haunting, minor-key trumpet playing, highly reminiscent of the more introspective aspect of Miles Davis, his original music, co-written with one-name producer Kipper, is strongly reminiscent of the pop-jazz approach of his most recent employer, Sting, whose tour hiatus created the opportunity for the recording of the album. Sting even contributes a song, the samba-paced “All Would Envy,” complete with lyrics describing a wealthy May-December marriage, sung by Shawn Colvin. But elsewhere his spare, stylish, multi-cultural music provides a guiding principle. Botti is true to the basic tenets of smooth jazz, which hold that a steady beat within a propulsive rhythm track must be maintained, over which the soloist makes his presence felt. But he and Kipper keep things simple, often using an acoustic guitar to create musical textures more suggestive of Rio than west Los Angeles, where the record was actually cut. And even with his less-is-more style of playing, Botti is capable of coming up with melodies that would be strong enough to support lyrics if someone wanted to write them. (A good example is “Light the Stars.”) “Easter Parade,” the final track, is by the members of the Blue Nile, another good touchstone for the trumpeter’s moody, atmospheric sound. The result is a step above most of the cookie-cutter contemporary jazz albums of the day.

Edouard Ferlet is a jazz pianist featuring a refined swing. His album Think Bach, a first incursion into the world of the Cantor, was a total success: from Télérama (ffff) to Jazz Magazine, everyone was charmed by his approach and the quality of his piano (‘incredibly well turned out and beautiful,’ wrote Stéphane Friédérich in Pianiste)… Unclassifiable and unpredictable, as he defines himself, the pianist-composer is in the habit of combining jazz with the most varied forms: classical music, theatre, filmscores, performances and musical readings with authors such as Nancy Huston… In the continuity of the Think Bach project, Arièle Butaux provoked an unexpected duo on French radio, centred on Baroque music and improvisation, a magical, timeless face-to-face between Edouard Ferlet and harpsichordist Violaine Cochard. Considered one of the finest ambassadresses of her instrument and also a great lover of Bach, she recorded, on an exceptional instrument, an album that drew considerable attention. This disc is the result of that meeting of struck strings and plucked strings. Side by side, each at his or her own instrument, the two musicians carry on a dialogue about Bach’s music, between original text and improvisations…

Manuel de la Calva and Ramón Arcusa met while working in an aviation company. After singing together at a Christmas party, these young music lovers decided to pursue a career naming their act Duo Dinamico. They started with a live performance at a local radio station and recording an EP for the first time in 1959, featuring “Little Darling,” “Alone,” “Cowboy,” and “Recordandote.” Soon, Duo Dinamico was performing along with Luis Mariano, Lucho Gatica, even the Platters, and getting main roles in movies such as Boton De Ancla and Buscame A Esa Chica. The pair wrote “La, la, la”, the song that won the 1968 Eurovision Song Contest, performed by Massiel, while in 1972, after recording in London with producer George Martin, Ramón Arcusa and Manuel de la Calva decided to concentrate themselves in producing new acts, in addition, composing for prominent Latin artists. In 1986 Sony Music signed them up, releasing a self-titled album, followed by En Forma, featuring “Resistiré,” which was chosen by Pedro Almodóvar as a main title for the movie soundtrack of Atame. Dúo Dinámico continued to perform in the years to come and in 2007 Quisiera Ser — a musical featuring 24 of their hits — began a run at the Teatro Nuevo Apolo in Madrid. ~~ Artist Biography by Drago Bonacich

Doyle Bramhall II – Shades (2018) [Official Digital Download 24bit/44,1kHz]

Doyle Bramhall II – Shades (2018)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 55:58 minutes | 625 MB | Genre: Blues
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Provogue

On Oct.5, 2018 Provogue Records will release Shades, singer-songwriter and guitarist Doyle Bramhall II’s debut for the label. Shades is a spellbinding blend of grungy blues, raucous garage rock, transcendent psychedelia, and soothing, soul-stirring ballads that sees Bramhall reaching new heights as a multi-instrumentalist (he plays guitars, bass, drums and keyboards), producer and vocalist while responding to his heart’s most urgent commands as an arranger and lyricist. What is it about Doyle Bramhall II, and why does everybody want to work with him? Shades features a host of friends and luminaries who have all, in one way or another, played significant roles in Bramhall’s musical story: Eric Clapton, Norah Jones, the Tedeshi Trucks band, and Austin buds the Greyhounds. Since 2000, the uniquely gifted guitarist, singer, songwriter and producer has been practically joined to Eric Clapton’s hip as both an onstage and studio collaborator. Clapton makes a notable appearance on the album, providing blistering back-and-forth guitar work with Bramhall on the quaking R&B-tinged “Everything You Need”. Bramhall and pianist-singer Norah Jones have been making music together for years, and the two form a heavenly alliance on the elegant ballad “Searching for Love.” Shades concludes with a reverent reading of Bob Dylan’s classic “Going, Going, Gone,” a gem from the singer’s 1974 album, Planet Waves. Bramhall had recently performed the song with the Tedeschi Trucks Band at a Gregg Allman tribute concert last year, and he felt that a reunion with the group would make a powerful coda on his record.

The band has never achieved substantial commercial success, but a number of largely popular acts cite them as influential, and they have an underground following. After several lineup changes, the band went on hiatus from touring and recording in 2003, but resurfaced in 2008 before beginning work on new material and embarking on their first tour in six years in 2009. In 2017 the band reunited their acclaimed punkrockacademyfightsong lineup and are currently active.

Phantasm, Elizabeth Kenny – Dowland: Lachrimae or Seven Tears (2016) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 57:31 minutes | 1,01 GB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Linn Records

Summing up the Renaissance preoccupation with melancholy, this extraordinary collection of dance music for viols and lute includes Dowland’s ‘signature’ piece, Semper Dowland semper Dolens. Dowland reveals a personal world of sublime sadness, grief, anger and melancholy mollified by moments of joy and gladness.

A skilled lutenist, Dowland’s intricately-worked parts demand perfect synchronicity between Phantasm and Elizabeth Kenny, who rise to the technical and tempi challenges of marrying their instruments.
The popularity of Dowland’s music in his own lifetime continued through the centuries with Lawes, Jenkins and Gibbons all paying homage to Dowland’s ‘Tears’. Although freed from lyric constraints poetic images linger prompting Phantasm’s Laurence Dreyfus to describe this as ‘the most sensuously tuneful hour of music ever written’.

In a tumultuous 2020, the re-emergence of Doves with new music has provided a shaft of light in an otherwise brooding sky, finally landing their fifth album, ‘The Universal Want’, after an eleven-year artistic break. Buoyed by refreshed chemistry, restless studio creativity and public reaction to their return, the album’s release is preceded by the single ‘Prisoners’. Refusing once more to fall into predictable, guitar-bass-drums, ‘plug in and play’ dynamics, ‘The Universal Want”s overwhelming sense of intrigue owes everything to Doves’ three decades experience at the wheel of their band (a lifespan going back to their time as dance band, Sub Sub), and an autobiographical trip through the sounds of their own lives.

In 1535 Sylvestro Ganassi published in Venice the first treatise developing the technique of the art of ornamentation at an unprecedented level of rhythmic complexity and virtuosity. Playing the recorder, the instrument to which Ganassi devoted his work, Denis Raisin Dadre applies the rules of the treatise to the repertoire that Ganassi practiced, frottole and, above all, the madrigals of Philippe Verdelot. With the ornaments, the music proves to be a living art that practices a constant rhythmic shift, the exuberant virtuosity of improvisations and a ‘swing’ that would be typical of jazz in the 20th century.
