It took just two days before the microphones for István Kertész to imprint his name in the minds of Decca’s senior executives. The Budapest-born conductor’s debut recording for the label, made with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in March 1961, projected his high artistry and deep imagination into a bold and individual reading of Dvořák’s “New World” Symphony. Producer Ray Minshull and sound engineer James Brown liked what they heard at Vienna’s Sofiensaal. They recognised Kertész as a conductor for the new stereo age: he was young and handsome — eternally marketable qualities — yet owned the charismatic power, mature musicianship and personal warmth required to draw the best from the best. Minshull’s post-session report opened the door to Kertész’s productive relationship with the label, one that lasted until he fell victim to a tragic drowning accident in the sea near the Israeli city of Herzliya in 1973.

In March 2017, Warner Classics marks the 10th anniversary of Mstislav Rostropovich’s death and 90 years since his birth with the deluxe collectors’ box set Cellist of the Century, comprising of selected remastered recordings.

The label was given unprecedented access to Rostropovich’s personal archive and worked closely with his daughters Elena and Olga. The range and variety of music in the box set is nothing short of extraordinary, embracing works by more than 60 composers, from iconic recordings to rarities. A number of the live performances originate from Russian tapes saved from destruction by resourceful Soviet archivists when Rostropovich was exiled from the USSR (1974-1990), and which came back to light in the late 1990s. Another highlight is the complete Bach Cello Suites, presented here in both audio and video versions. The collection also features an exclusive audio interview of Rostropovich recorded by personality Jon Tolansky.

Although Rostropovich died 10 years ago, on 27 April 2007, he remains a powerful presence on the world’s cultural scene through his legacy as the greatest cellist of his time, as a brave advocate of human rights, and as a man of proverbial generosity and charisma.

Special care has been taken to ensure the highest quality of sound reproduction. Wherever possible, the engineers of Art et Son studios have refined the sound, always with scrupulous respect to the original sources. The analogue recordings originating from EMI and Erato (CD1-15) have been remastered in 96 kHz from the original tapes. These are, therefore, the first recordings where the presence and definition of sound are heard in such detail.

Among Mstislav Rostropovich’s many achievements was his enrichment of the cello repertoire. His passion for the music of his own time encouraged composers to create many dozens of works for him to perform. The two concertos on this disc, by Henri Dutilleux (1916-2013) and Witold Lutoslawski (1913-1994), are both modern classics, reflecting Tostropovich’s spirit as they push the boundaries of instrumental possibility while exciting and challenging the audience.

A bouquet of French cello music.Dutilleux, the centenary of whose birth we celebrate on 22 January 2016, made his appearance on earth just a few months before the premiere of one of Debussy’s final compositions: the Cello Sonata presented on this disc. The filiation is a natural one, for at an early age fate placed Dutilleux under the auspices of the composer of Pelléas and in the vicinity of the cello, which his brother played. Alongside a new recording of the famous Strophes sur le nom de Sacher, Emmanuelle Bertrand joins with her partners in the Luzerner Sinfonieorchester to pay an eagerly awaited tribute to the ‘distant world’ hymned by the poems of Baudelaire and sublimely echoed by Dutilleux, the most sensitive composer of our time.

Henri Dutilleux’s perfectionism resulted in a distinctive and individual musical language of rare poetry and invention. The interplay of stereophonic and polyrhythmic effects and jazzy brass writing in Symphony No. 2 ‘Le Double’ forms, in the composer’s own words, ‘a musical play of mirrors and of contrasting colours’, while Timbres, espaces, mouvement is Dutilleux’s response to Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night, a ‘longing for the infinity of nature’. The series of snapshots in Mystère de l’instant evokes fleeting and almost magical moments in time, its cumulative power indicative of a consummate composer at the height of his powers.

O’Halloran worked on this project during the lockdown in Iceland, where he ordinarily spends part of the year. Unable to return to his other home in Los Angeles, he drew inspiration from isolation and Iceland’s unique atmosphere, revisiting works from four solo albums and refining them through the prism of his Icelandic experience.

Echoes of everyone from J.S. Bach, Chopin and Debussy to Arvo Pärt and Erik Satie can be heard in O’Halloran’s keyboard compositions. His personal aesthetic, gentle and restrained, magnifies the subtle nuances of emotion with acute awareness. Listen to the new pre-release track Opus 28 Silfur Version with String Quartet now!

Dustin Charles Lynch is an American country music singer and songwriter. On his third album, Dustin Lynch moves beyond the big ballads and bad-boy rockers that helped define his first couple albums. Here, Lynch offers a wide-ranging set of rock- and R&B-influenced country tunes (about half of which he wrote himself) that express a wide spectrum of emotions. There’s plenty of fun, clever writing on guitar-driven sing-alongs like “I Wish You Were Beer” and “Party Song”, but the songs that hit the hardest are catchy midtempo tracks like “Small Town Boy” and “New Girl”.

”Is it Schubert? Chopin? Or Brahms?” boldly asks the accompanying booklet for this recording of Dussek’s works. One may wonder whether there aren’t some Beethoven influences – and there are! – and even some Weber, but in fact, history runs backwards as the Concerto for 2 Pianos, Op.63 presented here dates back to 1806, the Rondo Concertant is from 1809 and the Quintet from 1799, prior (or at best at the same time) to the time when Weber conceived his great works. Indeed, many tendancies are evocative of a young Chopin and his Concertos. In many regards, Dussek was a visionary: his orchestration is particularly audacious – this is in fact more of a concert symphony than a traditional concerto – and his harmonic mood swings are especially bold and delightful … The Quintet itself is also unique: it was put together for the same unusual orchestra as Schubert’s Trout Quintet, meaning a violin, alto, cello, double bass, and piano. With its exquisitely free flowing writing, the work contains many surprises for the listener to discover on their own. The album ends with Notturno concertant for horn, violin, and piano. The two fortepianos are played by Alexei Lubimov and Olga Pashchenko, one is a copy of a Walter instrument and the other is a Longman/Clementi.

Following on from Hyperion’s hugely popular ‘Romantic Piano Concerto’ series, the ‘Classical Piano Concerto’ focuses on the lesser-known concertos from the dawn of the genre. Between about 1770 and 1820—the high classical period dominated by Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven—musicians including Clementi, Cramer, Dussek, Steibelt, Woelfl and others made their names as composers and performers of piano concertos. This series aims to be the first in-depth recorded survey of this forgotten repertoire.

This first volume features three of Bohemian virtuoso Jan Ladislav Dussek’s eighteen piano concertos, taken from different points in his career. As a group, these pieces are a fascinating study, with most of the earlier works largely reflecting the Mozartian model, and the later ones revealing stylistic traits sometimes at odds with the late eighteenth-century conception of the form, and anticipating future developments in the genre.

There could be no finer guide to the hidden gems of this repertoire than Howard Shelley, whose recordings of Clementi keyboard works, and Mozart and Hummel piano concertos, have received such acclaim. He appears here as pianist / conductor with the Ulster Orchestra.
