All that is known of Bernardo Storace’s life derives from the title-page of his sole collection of music: in 1664 he was vice-maestro di cappella to the senate of Messina, Sicily. It is not known whether he was an antecedent of the Storace family of singers and musicians active in England at the end of the 18th century. His surviving music is all contained in his Selva di varie compositioni d’intavolatura per cimbalo ed organo, published in Venice in 1664.

A cross-generational project by the grand master of Italian Jazz. Energized by joyous experiences on the road the ever youthful Enrico Rava took his new working quartet of the last two years into Arte Suono Studio in Udine. Here they were joined by trombonist Gianluca Petrella, an internationally noted player through his contributions to Rava’s three acclaimed post-millennium quintet albums Tribe (2011), The Words & The Days (2005) and Easy Living (2003). With Manfred Eicher producing, the five Italians recorded a program of Rava originals which cover a broad range of moods – from brooding ballad playing to fiery uptempo post-bop. Once again Rava’s playing makes it clear that lightness and intensity, elegant cool and emotional warmth are no opposites. Rava and Petrella form a peerless two-horn frontline, whether playing in unison, engaging in dialogue or taking their turns in extensive soloing. The rhythm section of Gabriele Evangelista, Enrico Morello, (“in my opinion the number one drummer in Italy today”, says Rava) and guitarist Francesco Diodati give them both space and assured support.

Self-taught Trieste-born trumpeter Enrico Rava is the grand master of Italian jazz. Originally a Dixieland trombonist, he switched to trumpet in his teens after hearing Miles Davis. In 1967, he moved to New York (“where my idols were, all the people I wanted to meet”), and found his musical direction, playing with Roswell Rudd, Cecil Taylor, Charlie Haden, Carla Bley and the Jazz Composer’s Orchestra among others.

Recorded live at Rome’s Auditorium Parco della Musica last November, this album documents the meeting of the doyen of Italian jazz, Enrico Rava, with Joe Lovano, masterful US tenorist of Sicilian heritage. Rava and Lovano front a spirited quintet that includes lyrical pianist Giovanni Guidi, dynamic drummer Gerald Cleaver and rising star bassist Dezron Douglas (who makes his ECM debut here). Well-loved tunes by the two bandleaders form the core of the programme, including Enrico’s intricate “Interiors” and “Secrets” and Joe’s vigorous Texas blues “Forth Worth”, which recalls the energies of Ornette and Dewey Redman. The programme concludes with an extended and powerful medley that roams across the history of modern jazz as it gathers together Lovano’s “Drum Song”, John Coltrane’s “Spiritual” and the standard tune “Over The Rainbow”.

Released in June 1982, Opening Night is a rare album by Enrico Rava that has resurfaced (only in digital formats!) in 2019 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the label ECM. Recorded in December 1981 with double bassist Furio Di Castri, drummer Aldo Romano and forgotten pianist Franco D’Andrea, this is one of the records on Manfred Eicher’s label that was not produced by Eicher. When Thomas Stöwsand recorded the album at the Tonstudio Bauer studio in Ludwigsburg, the Italian trumpeter was already 43 years old and had six albums to his name. His free years were long gone and he continued on this record with a rather celebratory and melodic neo-hard bop, throughout which his band members’ enjoyment is palpable. Rava’s quartet is taken on an emotional rollercoaster that, without revolutionizing the genre, still showcases a total complicity which is well worth rediscovering. – Max Dembo

This live album breaks with Enrico Rava’s own traditions. In his ECM albums, all the way back to 1974’s The Pilgrim And The Stars, Rava has set his own compositions in the foreground. Not this time. Nor does he pay tribute to aspects of jazz history. Instead, on Rava On The Dance Floor the great Italian trumpeter enthusiastically turns his attention to the musical universe of the late Michael Jackson. And in this unexpected context, drawing also upon the energy of the Parco della Musica Jazz Lab band, he delivers impassioned and extroverted trumpet playing.

A new transatlantic quintet headed by Italian trumpeter Rava, recorded in New York in 2008 and a first ECM appearance for US tenorist Mark Turner, whose distilled, lean sound references Coltrane, Warne Marsh, Wayne Shorter and others. Turner’s searching, analytical tone is in marked contrast to Enrico’s lyrical flourishes, but the two make a fascinating pairing – especially with the resolutely musical pianist Stefano Bollani finding points of contact, and making his own statements. Add in the gifted bassist Larry Grenadier (last heard on ECM with Charles Lloyd) and that most unpredictable of all drummers, Paul Motian, and you have here a truly remarkable band.

Ils doivent me faire confiance.

An acclaimed Italian jazz pianist, composer, and educator, Enrico Pieranunzi is known for his virtuosic, classical-influenced technique, nuanced sense of harmony, and elegantly restrained approach to modern post-bop jazz. Influenced heavily by Bill Evans, Pieranunzi emerged in the 1970s leading his own trio, and quickly established himself internationally as an in-demand sideman for such jazz giants as Chet Baker, Lee Konitz, Phil Woods, and others. Along with performing, he is a dedicated teacher, having worked for many years as a full professor at the Conservatorio di Musica in Frosinone. Recognized as one of the foremost Italian jazz artists, he has garnered a handful of awards, including taking home the 1997 Django d’Or as Best European Jazz Musician and winning the 2014 German Echo Jazz Award as Best International Keyboard Artist.

Enrico Pieranunzi is certainly the only pianist of the music scene who can claim a double filiation jazz and classical. In addition to André Ceccarelli and Diego Imbert, he published in 2016 his album “ménage à trois” which illustrates the coexistence of his wife (classical music) and his mistress (Jazz). After the international success of “ménage à trois”, it was therefore natural for Enrico Pieranunzi, surrounded by these same musical accomplices, to study the work of Claude Debussy on the occasion of the commemoration of the centenary of the disappearance. last on March 25th. This trip with Claude Debussy is disturbing by its beauty, its lyricism, its delicacy and the immense respect that Enrico Pieranunzi dedicates to the latter. In this regard Pieranunzi declares in an open letter to Claude Debussy contained in the libretto of the album: “The ultimate meaning of this letter lies simply in the desire to communicate to you the unconditional admiration that your art has always aroused in me and my faithful musicians friends, an admiration that the intimate frequentation of your compositions for the realization of this album has only strengthened “. Exquisitely illustrated by a work by the artist Emiliano Ponzi who cultivates the mystery and romance of this cult composer, “Monsieur Claude – [A Travel with Claude Debussy]” is certainly the most original jazz project dedicated to Claude Debussy. The marriage of jazz and classical.

Correva l’anno 1976 quando Enrico Pieranunzi approcciava solitario il suo pianoforte per dare vita a dieci composizioni originali, tutte a sua firma, che hanno traccia to un significativo percorso della sua illuminata via di pianista e compositore. “The Day After The Silence” ci racconta quello che Pieranunzi era, ciò da cui è partito: la ricerca continua.

Vivaldi’s Concerti ripieni are probably the most unusual works written by the Venetian composer. Some of these pieces, however, are particularly exceptional for various reasons, especially considering the artistic environment in early 18th century Venice. This recording presents Vivaldi’s most brilliant and at the same time bizarre works from this genre. These compositional experiments are sometimes quite extreme and far ahead of their time, such as the enigmatic Concerto conca, the solemn Sinfonia Al Santo Sepolcro, the avant-garde and at the same time archaic Concerto alla Rustica. This recording is the first collaboration of the Academia Montis Regalis with Enrico Onofri as principal conductor.

Small size, four gut strings, a short bow were at beginning the ingredients of the magic. Such a magic happened in Italy, the cradle of the violin, during the seventeenth century. “Seicento!” is therefore a multifaceted time-travel through the Early Baroque, from Venice to Sicily, exploring the wonders of the first violin virtuosos and their dexterous-passionated playing. A collection of musics born looking at Caravaggio, Bernini and Borromini’s masterworks. – Passacaille

Johann Sebastian Bach‘s Sei Solo for unaccompanied violin figure amongst the baroque works on which the performance traditions of the 19th and 20th centuries weigh most heavily. Rediscovered halfway through the 19th century after having been forgotten for more than a century, these works quickly entered the repertoire of works performed by violinists during the Romantic period. Enrico Onofri’s (long-time concert director of the ensemble Il Giardino Armonico) interpretation inspires listeners with unbelievable detail in terms of embellishments and dynamics.
