”What seraphic music. It must be Bruckner”, remarked a friend who entered the room as I was playing this recording. I cannot recommend this . . . too highly, both as performances and recordings. Seraphic is the word. Bruckner’s three settings of the Mass are enough in themselves to convert the heathen. I cannot possibly decide which of them I like most, though my head tells me that No. 2 in E minor, with its wind-only accompaniment, is the greatest. What is obvious is that they are the work of a master of choral music, who knew infallibly what effects he wished to create and how to create them, who had the acoustics of a cathedral inbuilt into his notes as he put them on paper and who can rightly be compared with Palestrina in the purity and emotional fervour of his art.

The Romanian Eugen Cicero was a Wunderkind, performing his first piano concert with a symphony orchestra at the age of six. His first SABA/MPS album, Rokoko Jazz sold over a million copies. Cicero was acknowledged as an “all-around entertainer, someone who gives a damn about stylistic borders and takes whatever is useful, from Bach to Cole Porter”. The Cole Porter classic It’s De-Lovely shows the man can swing, and with tips of the hat to Errol Garner and George Shearing, knows his jazz piano. Cicero and the MPS “house rhythm section” of bassist Peter Witte and drummer Charly Antolini display an uncanny empathy throughout. Autumn Leaves sounds as if Schuman’s Kinderscenen might have been played out in Harlem. Und Bach? from Johann Sebastian’s Prelude in C Minor rates as “the most intensive and dynamic of the wave of modern Bach-to-jazz recordings (Joachim E. Berendt). Cicero and co garnish Hello Dolly with the appropriate Broadway treatment; his interpretation of pianist Randy Weston’s Little Niles owes as much to Chopin as to Afro-American jazz, while Por Favor is simply high entertainment. Amazing music by a pianist with the sensibilities of the great classical and jazz interpreters at his fingertips.

It starts with a fascination for sound, an obsession even, that throws you into the spiral of its various parameters: vibration, waves, speed, intensity, timbre, frequency, height… “I have always been moved by the primordial importance given to sound, and to that in which it evolves: Time” says the performer in this recording. Whether it is fleeting, the time of a dance of death, twisting into a waltz or turning a few loops, from the wrenching expressivity of the soprano saxophone to the astonishing spectre of the elusive bass saxophone, by way of the tenderness of the tenor or the alto, this program tends toward perpetual motion and permanent instability. The organic movement of each of the scores tends toward the – subtle – movement of the history of music itself and its modernity. It was with a dream of new sonorities that Berlioz characterized each of « idées fixes » in his Symphonie Fantastique. It was on a strange ground of immobility, of precocious minimalism, that Ravel introduced the saxophone into his Bolero.

Recorded in 1968 and 1969, this record is by far the best way to get to know, love, and appreciate Eubie Blake, master of ragtime and gorgeous melodies. The taproot of jazz runs directly from Blake’s generation up through all of those Eastern Seaboard ticklers, most significantly James P. Johnson and the school of what critics and historians have labeled Harlem stride piano. While his early historical recordings are wonderfully authentic, there exists no finer example of Eubie Blake on record than this double LP, covered with photos and informative liner notes and packed with Blake’s incredibly dexterous performances. During his comeback as an aged wonder, there was a tendency for the public to regard him as little more than an entertaining curiosity. This attitude allowed for a superficial comprehension of Blake’s background and served to trivialize his accomplished position in the evolution of 20th century music. 86 Years solves all of these problems. The first half of the program consists of rags. Blake plays them joyously, sometimes shouting and bursting into laughter as his hands work the keys. Eleven of these pieces are Blake originals, and on one or two occasions he prefaces the music with a story describing the circumstances under which the piece was composed. There’s one by Joplin and two by John Philip Sousa, making for a strikingly accurate invocation of the musical scene within which Blake operated at the beginning of the 20th century. A portion of the album is specifically dedicated to theater music, and for most of these tunes Blake’s old partner Noble Sissle is heard singing and chatting with the pianist. Whoever was responsible for recording these two elderly gentlemen and sharing the results with the public really did the world a great favor. Hearing them sing “If You’ve Never Been Vamped By a Brownskin, You’ve Never Been Vamped at All” is a rare treat. Finally, there are Blake’s most harmonically advanced moments: a medley of James P. Johnson melodies, a stunning realization of Luckey Roberts’ “Spanish Venus,” and Blake’s own masterpieces, unforgettably rendered: “Dixie Moon,” “Blues, Why Don’t You Let Me Alone,” “Blue Rag in 12 Keys,” and the lovely “Memories of You.” This is Blake at his ancient best.

Jones flew in from Chicago, IL just before this set began at the Famous Ballroom in Baltimore, MD with Cedar Walton on piano, Sam Jones on bass and Billy Higgins on drums, and provided instant enjoyment for the crowd gathered on Sunday, February 27, 1972.
A Soulful Afternoon, along with Cannonball Adderley Swingin’ in Seattle: Live at the Penthouse (1966-1967), are the first two releases from the newly-formed Reel to Real Records launched by saxophonist Cory Weeds and producer Zev Feldman focused on important archival jazz releases.

After paying dues for over 15 years, Etta Jones (1928-2001) became an overnight sensation with the release of this, her first Prestige album.
