Kenneth “Red” Norville was born in Beardstown, Illinois on March 31, 1908. By the middle 20’s he was playing professionally throughout the mid-west states and on radio. He worked for Paul Whiteman in the early 30’s and married singer Mildred Bailey. He formed his first band in 1935 and played at the Famous Door in New York. This group was augmented the following year for an engagement at the Commodore Hotel using arrangements by Eddie Sauter who also played trumpet with the band.

For the last ten years or so, there has been a gratifying renewal of interest in the eminent Russian composer Nikolai Myaskovsky, whose career spanned the late Romantic to early Modern periods. His creative legacy deserves far greater attention than is currently paid to him: Myaskovsky’s music demonstrates the highest level of craftsmanship and explores a very unique realm of emotional and soulful experience.His Cello Concerto, Op. 66, was composed in the last three months of 1944.What prompted Myaskovsky to compose this work is not known, since the work was neither commissioned by a performer nor written for a specific artist. It was probably intended to contribute to the growing repertoire of instrumental concertos being created for the rising generation of young Soviet virtuosos. The two-movement concerto opens with a contemplative Lento ma non troppo in a modified sonata form, with a brief solo cadenza taking the place of the development. The prevailing autumnal melancholy mood is balanced by a passionate second theme in major. The ensuing Allegro vivace is shaped as a rondo, with two slow episodes complementing the energetic main theme with its lively triplets. After a brilliant cadenza, the movement reaches its climax when the material of the opening movement is resumed, then leads into a meditative coda. In addition, two virtuoso cello sonatas by Myaskovsky can be heard. The remaining pieces on this album are by Myaskovsky’s teachers at the St. Petersburg Conservatory – Nikolai Rimsky-Korssakoff, who taught him the art of orchestration, and Anatoly Lyadoff, with whom he studied harmony, counterpoint, and free composition.

Robin Pharo and the ensemble Près de votre oreille offer a fascinating dive into the English vocal repertoire of the late 16th century.
At the end of the 16th century, which was also the reign of Elizabeth I, the fashion for the Italian madrigal had indeed fertilized the English musical genius, already fond of vocality. A rich repertoire was born, that of the Lute Song, a song accompanied by the lute, otherwise known as Ayre. If Dowland’s genius overshadowed his contemporaries, this program seeks to do them justice. It reveals their ability to adapt to the style by developing it into a vocal quartet and by adding other equally interesting instruments. The reduced number of instruments allows us to enter into the intimacy and poetry of these works. Here, we are told of anonymous lovers, of the ordinary beauties of nature, of simple but profound sorrows, and then, of course, of this omnipresent, daily death, which we frequent in familiarity.
