The viola performance group SDA48 was launched in 2013 with the concept of “raising awareness of the instrument called viola and creating music that both listeners and players can enjoy from the heart.”

The album “What is Sarah Neutkens thinking?” comes from the hand of Eindhoven composer and pianist Sarah Neutkens (24). “There are feelings and thoughts in life that you can’t put into words, they come out to me through music,” says Sarah. For this double album, she wrote a composition for string quartet, which was recorded by the Alma Quartet, consisting of members of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. “It was a pleasure to work with Sarah. We were given all the freedom to bring to life the music she put on paper,” said Marc Daniel van Biemen, the quartet’s primarius. The second part of the album consists of pieces for solo piano, which Sarah played and recorded herself. In addition to the first single Hexagon, Rigel and I Saw A Crowd, it also includes an arrangement for piano of Other Echoes, a piece she previously composed as a string quartet.

Sam Gendel always sounded to me like Lofi-house without beats, a saxophonized lung train, A.G. Cook on a cough syrup diet. Why did everyone celebrate every little Fürzlein that escaped at Leaving Records? I have no idea. If this was the great avant-garde of the so-called ambient jazz, it could be gendeln! That’s how it has been so far. With “Cookup”, now published on Nonesuch, everything is different. Sam Gendel has taken apart R&B songs with his special, Philippe Melanson and Gabe Noel, both collaborators of Kamasi Washington or Ben LaMar Gay. Yes, R’n’B songs! And so the list reads like the line-up of a halftime show at the Super Bowl: Beyoncé, Erykah Badu, Aaliyah. Sam Gendel borrowed the sheet music from them and immediately lost it again. Nevertheless, you have to thank them for the warmth of the lap. If Gendel occasionally comes up with the idea of tinkling the “Twin Peaks” melody on the vibraphone, while the all-time cuddle “I Swear” curls over the dulcimer, the hand slips one floor lower anyway. Before the morality police step on the scene: “Cookup” also goes through as a soft soap for the Sunday swank with the in-laws. It couldn’t be better without a trip to the Club of Gore.

Sam Donahue hatte in Detroit seit 1933 eine erste eigene Band mit jungen Musikern, die später von Sonny Burke übernommen wurde; er spielte dann 1938/40 bei Gene Krupa and His Orchestra und arbeitete dann bei Harry James und Benny Goodman. Mit einer eigenen Band trat er an der Ostküste u. a. im Glen Island Casino und Frank Dailey’s Meadowbrook auf. 1942 diente er in der US-Marine; dort spielte er in der zunächst von Artie Shaw geleiteten US Navy Dance Band, mit der er während der Kriegsjahre durch Europa tourte und große Erfolge feierte. Donahue leitete die Band bis 1946 und reformierte dann seine eigene Vorkriegsband, mit der er im Paramount Theatre gastierte; zu seinen Solisten gehörte u. a. Doc Severinsen. In den 1950er Jahren arbeitete er mit Gene Krupa, Woody Herman, Tommy Dorsey und Billy May. Vom 1951 bis 1965, nach einem kurzen Gastspiel in der Stan Kenton Band, leitete er die Tommy Dorsey Memorial Band, die mit Frank Sinatra und Charlie Shavers auftrat. Danach arbeitete er als Bandleader in den Playboy-Clubs und spielte weiterhin im Swing-Stil.

These three works by the Romanian composer Livia Teodorescu-Ciocănea (b. 1959) show her approach to three of the central genres of the western classical tradition: symphony, concerto and cantata. The powerful and programmatic Archimedes Symphony was inspired by the death of Archimedes in the siege of Syracuse in 214 BC; the Rite for Enchanting the Air – a concerto for various flutes and orchestra – is a kind of magical journey into a dizzying world of sound and colour; and the cantata Mysterium tremendum aims to reconcile Byzantine and Catholic liturgical traditions. All three make clear her fascination with orchestral timbre and texture – and have distant roots in Romanian folk-music.
