Built around the young soprano Katherine Watson and suggested by the conductor and flutist Alexis Kossenko, supported by the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles, this operatic program revives the splendor of Versailles. Blending operatic airs and instrumental pieces, this baroque collection offers a selection of the major works of the Sun King’s court, from André Campra to Marin Marais, but rediscovers as well several long-forgotten works from this period, as Louis de Lully’s opera Orphée. It also allows us to glimpse into the dramatic power of the rôles tendres, that mostly suit to women in love, leading roles of the tragédie lyrique, and for which Katherine Watson proves to be the ideal interpreter. The smoothness of her timbre and the clarity of the orchestra, under Alexis Kossenko’s sure direction, reveal all the treasures of these French airs that explore the depths of the human soul. Often exposed to torments, victims of the avarice of the gods, suffering from love and cruelty, the heroins of the tragédie lyrique nevertheless embody tragic beauty and majesty.

To celebrate 30 years of the Concert Spirituel, Hervé Niquet pays homage to the French musical patrimony of the 17th and 18th centuries, to whose exploration he remains passionately devoted. In close collaboration of Benoit Dratwicki and the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles – which has also feted its 30th anniversary in 2018 – together they have devised an intriguingly unconventional programme idea. Following the example of Louis XIV who in 1671 asked Lully to create a Ballet of ballets consisting of extracts from the thirty or so ballets that the composer had put on at court, they have conceived An Imaginary Opera, a veritable ‘Opera of Operas’: around thirty extracts, with well-known repertoire alongside rarities – some completely unknown and unpublished – have been put together to create a plot centred around three dramatic archetypes of the period: a princess in love, a witch queen – her rival – and a courageous prince. All the themes of French baroque opera are illustrated in turn, according to the rules of the genre: battle, tempest, sorcery, love duets, religious invocations, and sleep… The virtuoso arias, dazzling ballets and imposing ceremonial choruses are by Lully and Rameau, naturally – but also by Campra, Marais, Bertin de La Doué, Destouches, Stück, Gervais, Colin de Blamont, Rebel, Francœur, Montéclair, Leclair and Dauvergne… Brilliantly brought to life by the very finest of today’s baroque lyric artists, this recording was made at the Opéra Royal de Versailles. And to illustrate the CD of this festive pastiche of a princess, a prince and a witch, what more appropriate than the famous trio from the 1970s series Bewitched, the 254-episode legendary tv classic!

Modern pop music never treated Katharine McPhee especially well. She hit the Billboard Top 40 only once, when her 2007 post-American Idol debut, “Over It,” went to 29. Given this, a move to the Great American Songbook makes sense, and 2017’s I Fall in Love Too Easily is indeed a classy affair. Produced by Don Was and recorded at Capitol Studios, the place where Frank Sinatra cut so many of his classic records, I Fall in Love Too Easily is a smoky, subdued set of standards. McPhee and Was don’t opt for the unexpected, preferring songs that are well-known and sturdy, withstanding decades of renditions: “All the Way,” “I’ll Be Seeing You,” “Night and Day,” “I’ve Grown Accustomed to His Face.” McPhee doesn’t radically reinterpret these warhorses, preferring to follow the contours of the songs exactly, so a lot of the weight on I Fall in Love Too Easily rests on the production. While there are strings and the occasional drum, the focus is always on McPhee and her pianist, giving this album the cozy, intimate feel of a nightclub.

Katharina Uhde, Assistant Professor of Music at Valparaiso University, is an internationally acclaimed violinist and musicologist. She is the author of The Music of Joseph Joachim (Boydell & Brewer, 2018). She holds a DMA degree from the University of Michigan and a PhD in Musicology from Duke University. As a soloist, quartet and piano trio member she has won first prizes in international competitions in Czech Republic and Germany. She has also won the 2004 Concerto Competition of the University of Michigan, where she studied with support of a Fulbright grant. She has released a CD Brasilianische Kammermusik and several online videos with world-renowned pianist Bruno Canino, with whom she performed the Beethoven cycle in 2017. Uhde just recorded a full-length CD with virtuoso works for violin and orchestra by Joseph Joachim, with the acclaimed Polish Radio Orchestra Warsaw. This CD was generously supported by Valparaiso University (VU music department; the Provost’s Office, and the Office of International Programming). Uhde has also just released a Bärenreiter edition with works by Joachim, which she has also performed with orchestra in Ann Arbor (2018), Valparaiso, IN (2018), China (May 2019), and in Warsaw (October 2019). The premiere of two newly rediscovered Fantasies on Hungarian and Irish Themes by Joachim took place on July 12, 2019 in Baden-Baden, with the Baden-Baden Philharmonic Orchestra. She has appeared as a soloist with the Sinfonia Varsovia, the Goettinger Musikfreunde Orchestra, the Marburg University Orchestra, the UFRN Orchestra Natal, and the Belgrade University Orchestra. As a violin soloist, she has worked with conductors Kenneth Kiesler, Volker Schmidt-Gertenbach, Dennis-Friesen Carper, and Pavel Baleff.

In the spring of 2020, the Covid pandemic caused turmoil in the concert diaries of most musicians, including the conductor Andrew Litton and his wife Katharina Kang Litton, principal violist of New York City Ballet. To find an outlet for their musical expression they began to explore the repertoire for viola and piano together. Having played the Sonatas by Brahms they came across the music by two other Viennese composers, Brahms’ near-contemporary Robert Fuchs and his student Egon Kornauth. Fuchs – who the less-than-effusive Brahms called “a splendid musician” – had a long and distinguished career at the Vienna Conservatory where his other students included such composers as Mahler, Wolf, Sibelius, Zemlinsky and Korngold.
