Dreamlover is a concept – album that brings together important part of Albena Petrovic’s works for Baritone Saxophone, Alto Saxophone solo and chamber music, here She choose the pieces in relation to Joan Marti-Frasquier, who interpreted all of them, and somehow, he gave the initial energy to this creative process. Her catalogue for Saxophones started in 2006-2007 with the quartet « Gebet zum Nichterscheinen », where the Baritone plays almost solo by integrating it into the quartet. This was the time when saxophone ensembles made an important presence and were multiplying all over Europe. The piece appeared during this period, but without being published it did not enjoy great popularity after its premiere; yet 15 years later She rediscovered it without a wrinkle, thanks to the Kebyart Ensemble. It is very curious to discover in this early piece as a precursor, many of the characteristic elements that will mark her later writing. This album which is most a tribute to the Baritone Saxophone shows a new aspect of her work. On the one hand it expresses the dreamy side of her aesthetic through the technical and sound possibilities of this instrument which is rarely given solo pieces, on the other hand She tried to broaden, thanks to the virtuoso Joan Marti – Frasquier, the range of sonic possibilities of the instrument, without succeeding to exhaust it because each time there is still more to discover.

You don’t need to be a particularly avid music fan to know that if there’s a new Kavinsky record coming, it will probably mine the whole sad robots/80s neon futurism aesthetic in clean, crisp musical widescreen. After all, if you’ve racked up a quarter of a billion streams for ‘Nightcall’, the behemoth single that became the de facto theme to Drive a decade ago, you’d be forgiven for sticking to a winning formula. However, what Kavinsky surrenders to predictability he more than makes up for with exquisite execution, and Reborn — his first long-player in nine years — presents twelve iterations of his one irresistible trick to within an inch of perfection.

To anyone who plays chamber music of any sort, Schubert’s music is a wonderful world to enter. It lifts our spirit to a dreamlike state of awe that is quite unique, with it sweeping long lines and pure poetry. The masterpieces on this cd were ‘stolen’ from Schubert’s original instrumentation. Start with the Arpeggione sonata, originally written for the ‘Arpeggione’, a bowed instrument with six strings and frets, tuned like a guitar but played like a gamba.

A selection of Russian folksongs set by Beethoven, Shostakovich’s First Piano Trio and Seven Romances on Poems by Blok, and Weinberg’s Jewish Songs form the backbone of the recital. These are complemented by vocalises (wordless songs) by Stravinsky, Rachmaninoff, Gubaidulina, and Auerbach.

Started off as the composer and guitarist of post-rock band yodaka in 2001. Being inspired by the band’s psychedelic sound due to a post-rock approach, and by Maurizio Bianchi, he started a solo project in 2004. As a solo artist his idea is to create not only acoustic, but also electronic filmy soundscapes and atmospheres, by melting together a variety of classic instruments, spoken word snippets, and crisp beats. With a proper amount of ambient music, all of these form an exquisite sound experience.

Vibraphonists like to be the sprinters. This is also due to their instrument, which, thanks to its percussive clarity, lends itself to letting the tones bubble powerfully. Karl Ivar Refseth doesn’t care. He is a poet, not a speaker, holds sounds together instead of firing salvos of sound. That makes the Norwegian, who lives in Berlin, a texture worker for The Notwist, but also an unexcited leader of his own trio. He leaves the snaking, meandering and juggling with the lines to the alto saxophonist Christian Weidner, who takes the lead on “Devotion”, the band’s second album after a six-year break. Refseth and the double bass player Matthias Pichler indicate the direction, and their closely interlocked shimmering and lingering determine the sound. The result is transparent chamber music, acoustically dominated music, oscillating between melodic exuberance and the charm of improvising miniatures.

Well, KARFAGEN has passed his passing exam again; symphonic prog where the instruments are at the party, where the rhythms and tunes are varied which also allows to develop the group, not to confine it in a retro-prog too sectarian. A fresh, varied album that shows the full range of musicians; a vintage album for the proposed climates but young for the richness of the sounds deployed; a musically rich, creative, bewitching and very rich album. There is certainly 70’s sound but updated, sound that remains avant-garde, productive, airy and innovative. Symphonic Art Rock!

A half-century after the release of Karen Dalton’s cult classic second album, In My Own Time sounds as magical as it always has; it was never—despite the album’s title—that she was ahead of her time, but rather not of this world. Which is not to say she was some ethereal creature. After a whole life lived in her teenage years, married twice and with two kids, Dalton moved from Oklahoma to New York City to be part of the Greenwich Village 1960s folk scene alongside the likes of Tim Hardin and Neil Young. Bob Dylan called her one of his favorites, saying “Karen had a voice like Billie Holiday.” She reportedly hated the comparison, though you get why Dylan made it: it’s the weary ache and that slim silver thread of hope that remains. You can hear it on her cover of George Jones’ “Take Me;” the piano flutters like it needs a fainting couch, but Dalton turns the quiet plea into something wistful rather than desperate. “Take me to Siberia and the coldest weather of the winter time/ And it would be just like spring in California,” she sings, drawing out that last word like it’s some impossible oasis. (By then, Dalton had had two teeth knocked out in a fight between boyfriends.) It’s in her jaunty delivery of the Holland-Dozier-Holland’s “How Sweet It is” and her interpretation of Richard Manuel’s psychedelic country-rock “In a Station,” Dalton blowing like wind through some desolate space. And lord knows it’s in her most famous song, the Scottish folk traditional “Katie Cruel.” Helped along by high-lonesome banjo, it’s as haunted as they come. “When I first came to town, they called me the roving jewel,” Dalton sings, managing to make it sound like she’s not broken by it all. “Now they’ve changed their tune, call me Katie Cruel.” Credit her wavery, light-refracted voice and the way it reflects both a fragility of nature and a hardscrabble strength of circumstance. (While the story of folkie Fred Neil secretly recording Dalton’s first album by not telling her the tape was running has been romanticized, it’s also exploitative and manipulative.) Dalton, who would disappear after In My Own Time, battled heroin and alcohol addiction and died at age 55 after an AIDS diagnosis. But her influence carries on, in Angel Olsen, Lucinda Williams, Sharon Van Etten, Courtney Barnett and Nick Cave, to name a few. This new expanded and remastered edition includes alternate takes of “In My Own Dream,” “Something on Your Mind” and “Katie Cruel.” The latter two light a small fire under the beat, but find Dalton less declarative, like she’s consoling a friend in hushed tones. There are also several live tracks. “Take Me,” captured in April 1971 in Germany, is so intimate it’s disarming, Dalton’s voice cracking on the line “like heaven to me.” But there is strength—an almost defiance—on the songs from her Montreaux performance a month later, even in “Blues on the Ceiling” when she predicts she’ll “Never get out of these blues alive.” – Shelly Ridenour

ALL THAT OUR MOTHERS HAVE FOUGHT is a collection of contemporary, Norwegian choral works portraying strong women. The music illustrate some of the many storms that women have had to – and still have to – weather. They tell stories about the women’s suffrage movement, about a Syrian student risking her life to complete her medical education, and about a small girl’s defiance. All these stories open our eyes to different viewpoints on women’s struggles. The driving force behind this collection is our wish to provide new perspectives on the weeping women of the Norwegian national anthem, thru music composed by Tone Åse, Trond Kverno, Marianne Reidarsdatter Eriksen, Birgit Djupedal, Ellen Lindquist and Eva Holm Foosnæs.

The music of Winter’s Tale is deliberately inspired by the narrative-poetic spirit of Romanticism, paints pictures of sound, tells musical stories. Suddenly, a mischievous goblin appears with Latin American rhythms and invites us to dance. Then none other than George Frideric Handel enters the stage with dignity to serenade the king. And what a serenade…! Of course, Mr Bach is not neglected either! It is a musical journey through time and space, at once profound and entertaining, both tradition-conscious and refreshingly irreverent.
