This is a prime example of an informal studio jam session in the critical period when John Coltrane was perfecting his ‘sheets of sound’ approach. The emerging tenor star is the focal point in a quintet filled with serendipitous connections. Kenny Burrell, Tommy Flanagan, and Paul Chambers were at the forefront of an emerging generation of young Detroit modernists; Burrell, Coltrane, and Flanagan had proved their compatibility a year earlier on The Cats (OJC-079); and Jimmy Cobb was poised to become a regular partner of Coltrane and Chambers in the Miles Davis sextet. The tenor/guitar duet ‘Why Was I Born?’ is a unique gem in an album filled with assured and eloquent blowing.

Few can claim the title of living legend. Kenny Burrell is just such a person. In fact he’s more he’s living history, past, present and future. His credentials are voluminous and accomplishments staggering, and he hasn’t stopped. Today, he is active recording and performing, a respected educator, and an elder statesman of the music. His legacy is pervasive. His soulful sound and approach have influenced virtually everyone claiming a jazz pedigree but extends to many outside the genre, a la Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Wonder, Steve Howe, Andy Summers, and Freddie King. Here Burrell is backed by some of his favorite West Cost colleagues in a varied program of standards and few originals by the leader himself, including one brand new composition. Also on hand is the exuberant voice of Barbara Morrison who brings her tremendous talent and personality to three tracks.

Kenny Burrell’s guitaristry is well-documented in his years with Oscar Peterson and on his first dates as a leader on the Blue Note label, but God Bless the Child, his only date for CTI in 1971, is an under-heard masterpiece in his catalog. Burrell’s band for the set includes bassist Ron Carter, percussionist Ray Barretto, Richard Wyands on piano, flutist Hubert Laws, trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, and drummer Billy Cobham. CTI’s house arranger, Don Sebesky, assembled and conducted the strings in a manner that stands strangely and beautifully apart from his other work on the label. Sebesky understood Burrell’s understated approach to playing guitar. Burrell didn’t belong with the fusioneers, but he could groove better than any of them. Sebesky built a moody, atmospheric soundscape behind him, one that was as impressionistic as it was illuminating of a player who could dig in and chop it up — as he does on his own composition “Love Is the Answer” and “Do What You Gotta Do” — and stroke it smooth and mellow as on the title track, the truly sublime “Be Yourself,” and Thad Jones’ “A Child Is Born.” The Legacy CD remaster also includes the only three outtakes from the session, an alternate of the Jones tune, and two brief but gorgeous solos on “Ballad of the Sad Young Men” and on Kurt Weill’s “Lost in the Stars.” This is Burrell at his level best as a player to be sure, but also as a composer and as a bandleader. Magnificent.

The performance begins at 4 p.m.

Broberg, who is pursuing a Master of Music degree in piano performance at Park, studies under Stanislav Ioudenitch, associate professor of music/piano, who won the 11th Cliburn event in 2001. Broberg is scheduled to perform the following repertoire in the concert:

Franck and transcribed for piano by Harold Bauer

He has played brilliantly alongside double bassist Kiyoshi Kitagawa and drummer Johnathan Blake for quite a few years, but Kenny Barron had not yet released an album with this addictive rhythmic approach that suits him so well. The result jumps out at the listener immediately with the magnificent Book Of Intuition released on Impulse!. Elegant, intelligent, refined and with a more than perfect swing, this record is an ambassador for the famous motto: less is more. Not a note overboard, No technical showboating. Each theme (all bearing Barron’s signature except for two covers Thelonious Monk, Shuffle Boil and Light Blue, and one by Charlie Haden, Nightfall) is discussed here with formidable class. Kenny Barron is one of the last giants of the eternal and timeless piano, and one that does not seek to revolutionize the genre nor the instrument but rather to find the just the right tone. A project that succeeds thanks to the precious involvement of Kitagawa and Blake. The three musicians reach a sort of aesthetic grace together here. A great album to listen again and again.

Following his sublime Book Of Intuition released in 2016 with bass player Kiyoshi Kitagawa and drummer Johnathan Blake, Kenny Barron is expanding his trio with tenor saxophonist Dayna Stephens and trumpeter Mike Rodriguez. The elegance, intelligence, refinement and perfect swing of the pianist are well-known, and for his first entry with the label Blue Note, the artist from Philadelphia now based in New York finds additional inspiration in the ardour of his accomplices. For these Concentric Circles, Barron opted for a repertoire mainly centred around his own compositions, complemented by Caetano Veloso’s Aquele frevo axe, drummer Lenny White’s L’s Bop, and Thelonious Monk’s Reflections. His quintet firmly bites into a hard-bop style, at times punctuated with Latino rhythms. More than anything, it’s the spontaneity of interventions and the fluidity of exchanges between the five men that make this album so enjoyable. None of them tried to reinvent the wheel, just make high-level jazz, without grandstanding or using frills. – Marc Zisman

The Art of Conversation marks the first time bassist/composer Dave Holland and pianist/composer Kenny Barron have recorded their duo performances. These titans began touring together throughout Europe and the United States in 2012 and this album reflects two years of Holland and Barron finessing their empathy, chemistry and repertoire. Out of an expansive body of work that they’ve cultivated, The Art of Conversation offers 10 compositions of originals and standards that exemplify their individual and combined musical ingenuity.

Holland and Barron will continue touring as a duo throughout the rest of 2014 in Europe and the United States. With The Art of Conversation capturing only a small portion of their still expanding repertoire, this disc hopefully marks just the beginning of more artful conversations between the two.

George Frederick Pinto (1785–1806) is one of the major ‘what-ifs’ of music history: a child prodigy both as performer (on violin and piano) and as composer, he was only twenty when he died, probably from tuberculosis or from what one writer called ‘dissipation’. But the music he composed in the little time he had reveals a composer as gifted as almost any of his contemporaries. These three quirky and inventive violin sonatas – receiving their first recordings here – sit on the cusp of Romanticism, their Classical elegance warmed by a graceful lyricism that looks forward to Schubert.

Keni Burke is the youngest of the original Five Stairsteps and the only one still seriously involved in music. You’re the Best, a fine effort, never reached first base. RCA pushed “Let Somebody Love You” and the title track, but neglected tracks like the chugging, stop-and-go “Night Riders,” pumped by spirited backing vocals, and “Gotta Find My Way Back to Your Heart,” a dramatic ballad that Burke composed with Bill Withers. “Never Stop Loving Me,” a Burke/Curtis Mayfield composition, has the same texture and sweetness of a Mayfield solo, while “Paintings of Love” is pure, unbridled Burke, sung in a soft, introspective voice that gels with the poetic lyrics.
