Recorded for the first time, the C minor Second String Quintet adopts the string quartet-with-second cello scoring employed by Schubert and Boccherini to create a work of rhythmic vitality, colour and contrasting moods. Also receiving its premiere recording, the intricately designed Third String Quintet, in A major, employs the two-viola instrumentation preferred by Mozart, Mendelssohn and Beethoven and is, as Toby Deller observes in his booklet notes, “the more lyrically Romantic work of the three on this recording, with four sharply characterised movements”.

Leonard Slatkin celebrated his 75th birthday in September 2019. Many of the selections in this program come from a concert given in his honor and are also a tribute to his remarkable musical family, both past and present. Historical recordings include Leonard’s cellist mother, Eleanor Aller, being conducted by Korngold in the Haydn concerto and a 1944 broadcast of his father, Felix, as a solo violinist in Brahms. Every piece here has a deeply personal connection for the family. For his composition The Raven, Leonard used Edgar Allan Poe’s poem in a work that is “almost like a concerto for speaker and orchestra.”

Gianluca Piacenza is an italian composer, pianist and sound designer.
After 2 year of private piano lessons when he was 6 years old, he began studying music at his hometown conservatory graduating with full marks in Classical Piano and Composition.
Today he works as music producer at Red Couch Studio, an inspirational space in which analog and digital equipment, acoustic and electronic instruments are equally important to develop a unique sonic signature. Alongside his academic path he attended piano courses and masterclasses with Sergio Fiorentino, Bruno Canino, Michele Marvulli, Alexander Lonquich, François-Joël Thiollier and Konstantin Scherbakov, constantly growing as classical pianist and expanding an already large repertoire ranging from Bach and Scarlatti to Cage, Ligeti, Pärt and many other contemporary composers.
Winner and finalist in national and international competitions, he appears in concerts both as soloist and as chamber music partner. Influenced by both the great tradition of classical music and the electronica/ambient scene, in 2014 began working on his first album “Dream”, an emotional and cinematic work in which he experiments with acoustic piano and live electronics interaction.
His sonic world could be described as a blend of acoustic textures, recorded and processed live in many different ways, and electronic soundscapes, created manipulating natural sounds and programming synthesizers and samplers.

A River Running to Your Heart, the new album from Eric D. Johnson’s long-running folk rock outfit Fruit Bats, represents the fullest realization of his creative vision to date. It’s a sonically diverse effort that largely explores the importance of what it means to be home, both physically and spiritually. And while that might seem like a peculiar focus for an artist who’s constantly in motion, for Fruit Bats, home can take many formsfrom the obvious to the obscure. The album will land in stores on CD, LP & Peak Vinyl LP (opaque blue & white color vinyl) on April 14th, 2023.Self-produced by Johnson a first for Fruit Bats with Jeremy Harris at Panoramic House just north of San Francisco, it’s Fruit Bats’ tenth full-length release. The album finds the project in the middle of a people-powered climb leading to the biggest shows, loudest accolades, and most enthusiastic new fans in Fruit Bats history! It’s hard to pinpoint a single reason for this mid-career resurgence. But after two decades of making music, hard-earned emotional maturity has clearly seeped into Johnson’s already inviting songs, resulting in a sound that’s connected with audiences like no other previous version of the band.Johnson, also a co-founder of Grammy nominated outfit Bonny Light Horseman, developed part of the album organically through long studio jams with his ace back-up (guy 1 uy2 guy2). His father was a former itinerant musician who became an instrument maker, and his brothers were violinist Adolf Busch and cellist Hermann Busch. Fritz Busch went to Cologne Conservatory in 1909, studying conducting with Steinbach.

As with Luc Ferrari, it is an assemblage of recorded sequences in which we recognize a succession of various events and we reconstruct in our imaginary a possible narrative that may have been at the origin of these sounds.
This is not the sound landscape (Soundscape or Field recording) whose neutrality of the author must be one of the characteristics. It is not reportage. Above all, it involves the assembly, by montage and superposition, of sounds of different origins with the intention of composing a musical continuity which can be assimilated to a kind of sonorous narrative.
In any case, it is the listener who has to construct his own story based on his recognition of the sources, or according to his interpretation of these sources.
The composer organizes the different sounds, puts them in relation, creating associations but also contradictions in the mind of the listener.

The project sparked from the stories of Italo Calvino and Jack London, leading to the creation of nine different episodes. The stories intertwine, the different sounds and styles merge to create a path touching Chopin, in a reinterpretation of Prelude Op.28, Nick Drake’s song Parasite and Egberto Gismonti’s Infância. These pieces mix together with the original compositions thanks to a clear melodic connotation. The form of each composition becomes a sort of Karst river that flows under everything, slow and immutable.
The title track Klondike, inspired by the Yukon region of Jack London’s writings, closes the album and gives a glimpse into a future increasingly contaminated by pop, rock and electronic elements.
