By the time Kix had recorded this, their fourth album, all eyes in the Hard Rock biospace were upon them as a band expected to rise up from the ranks to achieve success and exert influence. Certainly their record label Atlantic Records believed in the band enough to steer them towards not one, but three top notch producers; that’s Tom Werman (Mötley Crüe, Cheap Trick, Ted Nugent) together with the dynamic duo of Duane Barron and John Purdell (Ozzy Osbourne, Dream Theater). Recorded in Los Angeles and issued in August 1988, the record was immediately heralded as the best Kix album so far, with critics pointing out the quality of songs and a refinement of their trademark rough and tumble sound.

While there’s been something to be said for the cocoon that was the cottage-core trend of 2020—a cozy comfort the world needed as a bandage to protect against harsh reality—it’s time for a change. Cooler Returns rips the bandage off, and it feels so good: sunny and exhilarating, and if the lyrics make no sense, does it even matter? Those non-sequitur one-liners, not to mention the inflection, delivery and timbre of Justin Gaudet’s singing, made it impossible for the band to avoid comparisons to Pavement (truly, Gaudet and Stephen Malkmus sound like a DNA match) with their first album, 2019’s Football Money. It’s the same this time around, and hallelujah to that. “Tigers in the coliseum/ Lions at the Comfort Inn/ Rah rah Omaha/ Home of the husbands,” from “Omaha,” could’ve been lifted right off of Pavement’s Watery, Domestic EP, but add a ’60s pony dance beat and the obtuseness feels fresh as a daisy. “Hell yeah, the new game is insane and I’m stuck keeping the old score,” from the buoyant opener “Tyler” could be about a changing relationship or a video game sequel. Who cares, just listen to that dandy piano roll swan in. “Only Here for a Haircut,” all hazy guitars and punchy drums, and the ping-pong melody of “Cooler Returns” are instant mood-boosters. “Maid Marian’s Toast” and “Waiting in Line” bring a delightful rumble to jangle pop. “Highlights of 100” gallops like a colt, while the insistent “Nashville Wedding” (“I wanna strangle the jangle pop band,” Gaudet wails, no irony) comes on like Lou Reed if he’d done speed instead of dope. There are also throughlines between songs like bouncy “Undecided Voters” and the especially terrific “Domino” and the joyous, controlled chaos of Apples in Stereo. Never let it be said the members of Kiwi Jr. (including Alvvays bassist Brian Murphy, who has compared Kiwi Jr.’s guitar style to a “very fast but friendly dog”) don’t have good taste. “The obvious answer is they just can’t stand us/ I can hardly stand to be stood up here at all,” Gaudet speak-sings on “Guilty Party,” too clever by half. Whatever, dude, just keep the serotonin flowing. – Shelly Ridenour

From the exuberant, singular American composer Forrest Pierce comes a collection of glittering major works for strings and voice. His subjects are the sheen of dragonflies, sacred birch bark scrolls, and the cataclysmic nature of ecstatic mystical experience, interpreted by renowned cellist Kivie Cahn-Lipman and an all-star roster of musicians. At the center of the album is The Dante Samadhi, the epic setting of Canto XXXIII from Dante’s Paradiso, a Western account of enlightenment made vivid with echoes of Monteverdi, Britten, and Pierce’s own ecstatic melodic language and searing vision of tonality. Blistering, virtuosic passagework and hankering emptiness share the stage in Silver Birch Scroll for solo cello with Aspen trees, and in the fiery string trio Lord of June. The Sun and Other Stars reveals a masterful, passionate compositional voice in service of a vision of unbridled joy, unlike that of any other composer.

Having sold over a quarter of a million albums worldwide and sold out headline tours, London siblings Kitty Daisy & Lewis return with their new album, Kitty, Daisy & Lewis The Third. Produced by Mick Jones of The Clash in a new 16 track analogue studio in a derelict Indian restaurant in Camden Town, the band take their third album to another level, with the songwriting, instrumentation, styles, production and sound.

With three different writers and multi-instrumentalists in the band, their songs are an eclectic mix up of Pop, R’n’B & Blues, Psychedelic Rock, Soul, Country, Jazz and Ska. Embracing a spread of influences from blues to disco, but always sounding unmistakably Kitty Daisy & Lewis, the stories in this album resonate with moods and melodies that touch you in ways that are both uplifting and unnerving.

Kitty Kallen was a band singer, and later a soloist, who lit up bandstands with a handful of top leaders during the ’40s. She’s remembered for three reasons: big-band fans know that she was the one who replaced Helen O’Connell in the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra in 1943, also that she sang the vocal chorus on a pair of Harry James hits, “I’m Beginning to See the Light” and “It’s Been a Long, Long Time,” and virtually everyone with a radio in 1954 knew that she recorded the year’s most popular song, “Little Things Mean a Lot.” Her career lasted more than 20 years, but it was sporadic at best, with the major successes listed above virtually the only popularity she achieved. Born in Philadelphia in 1922, she was a gifted mimic who won talent shows and also appeared on children’s radio shows by the mid-’30s. Kallen was still a teenager when she began singing with bands (including Jan Savitt and Artie Shaw), and she earned her first full-time role in 1940 with Jack Teagarden’s Orchestra. Two years later, she joined Tommy Dorsey, and appeared on several hits, including “Besame Mucho” and “Star Eyes” (plus a 1943 film, I Dood It). One year later, she had jumped ship again, this time to the Harry James band, where she struck gold again with a pair of dreamy Hit Parade toppers, “I’m Beginning to See the Light” and “It’s Been a Long, Long Time.” Two additional hits followed – “I Guess I’ll Hang My Tears Out to Dry” and “I’ll Buy That Dream” – both of which were in the same mold as her previous features. After the end of World War II, during the late ’40s, Kallen sang on several radio programs, appeared as a solo act in clubs nationwide, and recorded for labels including Musicraft and Signature. Nothing clicked in a big way until 1953, when a contract with Decca paid dividends with a pair of million-sellers, “Little Things Mean a Lot” (her signature song) and “In the Chapel in the Moonlight.” Kallen proved popular on television, although by the mid-’50s, she began to be swept aside by rock-oriented pop music. She made brief comebacks in 1959 with Columbia and 1962 with RCA, but 1963 was the last year for her on the pop charts, with “My Coloring Book.” – John Bush

Liberating is a good descriptor for Kitten’s EP. A blend of the sophisticated elegance of dream pop with the jagged directness of rock and roll, it’s a declaration of intent and an auspicious announcement of the arrival of a new force in music. The title track “Cut It Out” has the sweetness of a delicate pop song underscored by a massive futuristic backbeat. “G#” is a reverb-drenched reinvention of classic shoegazer rock, slashed through with razor guitars and songs like “Sugar” showcase Chloe’s willingness to be intimate and vulnerable even from within these layers of raucous noise.

Liberty, enthusiasm and sharing: that might well be the motto of the Kitgut Quartet (named for the ‘kitgut’ or catgut strings it uses), which brings together four outstanding soloists, all of them members of the leading period-instrument European ensembles.

This first recording, devoted to Haydn and England (Purcell, Locke, Blow), explores the origins of the string quartet via a number of carefully chosen gems. A journey through time with plenty of surprises in store.
