Paul von Klenau’s (1883-1946) grandiose Ninth Symphony in eight movements was composed in Copenhagen 1945 as his last major work; an extraordinary fusion of a Requiem with Latin text and a traditional symphony for orchestra, choir and four soloists. The manuscript then lay unknown for more than fifty years until it appeared in the 2001 discovery of a large collection of Klenau manuscripts in Vienna, and not until March 2014 – after a thorough editing by The Royal Library in Copenhagen – did it receive its first performance by the Danish National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Michael Schønwandt. This world premiere recording presents the full symphony; a magnificent opus of both tonal, atonal and even twelve-tone passages, very far removed from the style that predominated in the post-Nielsen Danish music of the 1940s.

Paier and Valcic’s music is always sensual and rich in images, and this opulence of colours and pictures is also at the heart of what “Cinema Scenes” is about: they let their impressions of films flow freely as music, but above all the two musicians give expression to their own visual ideas.

The world of music has raved for more than a decade over Klaus Paier, an accordionist from Austria, and Asja Valcic, a cellist from Croatia. The German trade periodical “Jazzthing” praised “how timelessly and genre-transcending the duo makes music while taking jazz as its basis. Listening to one another, communicating, stitching anew onto the other’s ideas.” Applause came from “The Guardian” for the “gripping interplay,” and “Paris Move” saw “an invitation for the listener to cross boundaries.” For their SKIP debut album entitled “Fractal Beauty” the two have now expanded their phonic cosmos by adding Gerald Preinfalk, a woodwind player from Vienna whose CV includes work with the Vienna Art Orchestra as well as the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Bass clarinet, soprano sax and clarinet provide meticulously coordinated colorings that nestle perfectly on the sounds of accordion and cello.

Accordionist Klaus Paier and cellist Asja Valcic have been making music as a duo for ten years. Their playing has kept audiences delighted and critics enthralled: “Breathtaking,” said the magazine Der Spiegel; they are “a captivating match” (The Guardian). During this time the two have recorded four albums which have received numerous awards. The duo’s journey together began in 2009 with their debut album “À Deux”, and since then Paier and Valcic have proceeded to make their unique accordion-plus-cello sound into a thing of wonder. The titles of the previous albums by these two musicians, who live in Austria, give pointers to the elements that go into the making of their acts of musical creation: in 2013 their path together continued with “Silk Road”, followed by “Timeless Suite” (2015), which in turn led to the more opulent “Cinema Scenes”, for quartet. The sound is always their starting point: they have a finesse and eloquence from classical music, combined with the free-thinking, quicksilver instinctiveness of jazz, and influences from many parts of the world. And what results is capacious, widescreen music.

Paier and Valcic’s music is daring and full of curiosity, they present us with a road movie beyond convention that is full of layers and colours. “Silk Road” still maintains a unique and homogenous sound created by two adventurous explorers, who both fully master their instruments whilst complementing each other perfectly. Like so often, it took a long time to form something that nowadays seems destined to be together. It began twelve years ago, when Austrian accordionist Klaus Paier assembled a string quartet for one of his projects, and these four went on to become the radio.string.quartet.vienna. After their sensational debut album “Celebrating the Mahavishnu Orchestra“ they worked together with Klaus Paier on their next album “Radiotree” and it did not go unnoticed how well Asja Valcic’s cello suited Paier’s accordion. It was the beginning of a co-operation – “A Deux”, which, according to the SPIEGEL, combined “spectacular bitter-sweet sounds of an accordion with a cello that can groove like an upright bass” into “the very best of euro jazz”. Both audience and critics were sold, and the accolades followed, such as the “CD of the month” in Audio and Fono Forum.

“An excellent master of his craft” (M. Harras). Dmitri Grigoriev was born in 1979 in Leningrad and studied organ and piano after private lessons at the conservatories in St. Petersburg and Kazan, where he completed his studies in 2007 with the state concert exam.

The Romanian singer Anca Parghel, who sadly died much too early, was one of the most remarkable voices in European jazz. Her voice is remarkable for its sureness of intonation, fantastic range (four octaves) and diverse shades in her expressive possibilities. In addition, she had an exuberant temperament.

At the beginning of her international career, she toured the European jazz clubs in the late 80s/early 90s with the German pianist Klaus Ignatzek in various formations. In 1992 she recorded the studio production Airballoon with standards and compositions by Klaus Ignatzek.

On Airballoon, Anca Parghel interprets jazz standards in a very personal and incomparable way. She pays her masterly reminiscence to the great ladies of jazz. Anca Parghel swings, scats and interprets heartrending ballads – live she infects the audience and fellow musicians with her exuberant cheerfulness.

It is hardly an exaggeration to describe Klaus Doldinger as Germany’s most successful jazz artist: for 55 years now, the musician and composer has played the stages of the world, won countless awards, sold over two million albums and composed about 2000 music pieces. Some of his works have already become part of our pop culture cosmos, such as the soundtrack to Wolfgang Petersen’s classic movie ‘Das Boot’ or the ‘Tatort Melody’, the theme music to Germany’s most popular TV crime series. With his band Passport, founded by Doldinger in 1971, he has also written music history and caused quite a stir in the international, particularly the American music scene.

Retirement is out of the question for Klaus Doldinger, who will celebrate his 85th birthday on 12 May 2021. Always turned to music passion, his ears are still widely pointed. This has been going on for almost 70 years now. At that time, in the early 1950s, he founded the Dixieland band The Feetwarmers with like-minded jazz enthusiasts in Düsseldorf, which was followed by the Klaus Doldinger Quartet, with whom he dedicated himself to modern jazz. Today, he says modestly, he wants to continue to improve constantly. But in what actually, one is willing to ask. Filling his saxophone tone with even more soul? In Composing? Actually, he has already played everything and more, told and said what a musician can communicate in almost two lives. As if mental and physical vitality were nothing, he looks at you a little skeptically and answers in the breast tone of conviction: “Of course in everything”.
